SIMPSON.)\nHearing directly and indirectly so\nmuch in regard to tbe progress of\nCrnnhrook and this district, I was\nready after something over a year's\nabsence to see evidences of improvement in Cranbrook but wns not\nready to see the material growth\nthat has taken place in tbe city during the past fifteen or sixteen months\nI would like to say here that the\ngrowth that lias taken place in Cranbrook is of a material nature, a\ngrowth that shows confidence on the\npart Of the people of Crnnhrook to\nthe outside world and that is one of\ntbe best advertisements thnt any\ncity can have. I have observed in my\nconversation wltb old friends that\nthere has heen a marked advance as\nto the unanimity of feeling regarding\nthe possibilities of tho rity, and consequently a much greater improvement towards working together for\neverything that would prove of benefit to tho City nnd district. Those\nwho bnve known me here in the past.,\nknow tbat I have always believed in\nworking together nnd until the people in any city have arrived nt that\nstage it is Impossible to secure much\nin the wny of satisfactory results.\nThere have been times in tbe past\nwhen n feeling of dissatisfaction has\nprevailed when your Board of Trade\nwere simply organizations in name\nonly, but at tho present time I am\nconvinced that the Cranbrook Board\nof Trade has secured tbe necessary\nspirit nf co-operation that means\nsuccessful results. Two men may be\ncompetitors In business hut thoy\nshould get together when it comes to\nany work fur the promotion of the\nbest interests of tholr community. It\nseems as though the people of Cranhrook fully realize that very strong\npoint in progress nnd are willing not\nonly to art but to contribute for the\nsuccess of nu organization that has\nonly one object iu view and that is\n\"A Grenter nrnnbrook\". The buildings that have been erected birth of\nn public and private nature, the sewerage which was absolutely necessary\nIn this city, the improvements of\nloads leading to and from tbe city,\nall combine to make a great and\nglorious step forward for Cranbrook\nand the future of her people. As\neditor of tbe Herald in the past I\nwas called either a booster or a fool\nfor saying that tbe Cranbrook district was destined to he a producing\ndistrict, and tbat the talk of the mills\nsoon being through and the C.P.R.\nmoving their shops to Wardner,\nwhich seemed to he an annual epidemic among a certain class of people, was the rankest nonsense. Cranbrook mUBt depend upon her own industries and the growth nnd productiveness of her surrounding country.\nThe demand for land and the increase of prices is a practical demonstration of the fnct thnt the people\nfrom the outside are now satisfied\nthat Cranbrook has the land and the\nclimate to make fruit and smnll\nfarming an absolute success. Fill up\nyour lands and handle the affairs of\nyour city in a businesslike manner,\nand Cranbrook will grow as sure as\nthe sun rises nnd sets.\nYes! \"I like Kamloops where 1 am\nliving at the present time and expect to live there the rest of my\nlife. The building of the Canadian Northern down\nthe North Thomson to Kamloops\nand west to tbe coast, also south\nfrom Kamloops through the Okun-i-\ngan country means that Kamloops\nmust necessarily become the big distributing point on the main lines of\ntraffic in the Interior of British Columbia. It was further stated\nthnt as various drivers of all kinds\nof vehicles were apparently ignorant\n\u25a0>f tbe rules of the road, it was absolutely necessary thut these rules\nshould bo obtained and placed In\nprominent positions so that they\ncould be easily seen. It was particularly drawn to tbe meetings notice\ntbnt there were n number of young\npeople who hired teams nnd it tbo\nsame time were unaware which side\nof the road to ride. Fenwick, of Fort Steele,\nsuggested thai attention be given to\nthe making of several of the trunk\nroads more perfect, at present there\nwus a road between Wardner and Bull\nKiver nnd J affray to Klko that wus\npractically perfect, while the road\nfrom Bull Kiver to Fort Steele were\nin fairly good condition, as was the\nj road from Fort Steele, north to\n| WuBn, nnd all thnt was wanted now\nwas the repairing of the road from\nj Mud Creek to Wasa, aud we would\nhave some of the linest trunk roads\nto be found in tho province. When\nthis is (tone, we shall be able to\ndrive from Cranbrook to Steele then\nto Wardner, back home, having an\nexcellent outing, a pleasure trip that\nwould give to visitors a proper idea\nof what the country was like.\nSuperintendent Kendo, stated that\nthe government was providing an up-\nto-dote rock crusher, and that as far\nas possible the trunk roads would be\nmaenmndized ns rapidly as possihle.\nDr. J. fl. King, suggested that a\npermanent rond committee be appointed to make what recommendations\nwere necessary in connection with the\nroads and report to the superintendent of rnnds. This would be of gre.it\nassistance to Mr. Head, and facilitate\ntbe work required, as Mr. Head having some 400 miles of road to keep\nIn repair It was almost impossible\nfor him to fulfill all the needs.\nMessrs. A. R. Fenwick, of Fort\nN. Hanson, of Wasa; and Oeorge\nHoggntb of Crnnhrook, were appointed as a committee, to whom all\ncomplaints about had roads will be\nreported.\nAnother suggestion of Dr. King,\nwns thut as there were such a large\nnumber of untoists that were running\ncars out of Cranbrook, some 50 or\nperhaps more, nnd the garages having\ncars to rent, it would he an excellent\nplan to organize a tour to Leth\nbridge to attend the Dry Farming\nCongress nnd do a bit of practical\nadvertising of Crnnhrook district. A\nlarge tent, or even a shell building\ncould be put up for their accommodation and u commissionaire be obtained to look afler their various\nneeds, This would mean that there\nwould be a small Cranbrook in Loth-\nbridge and every one would be a\nwalking talking advertiser. Practical cflhihlts could also be shown to\nadvantage. It. was then announced\nthat the excursion was under consideration by tbe Hoard of Trade. The I\npresident, Mr. Baker, appointed Messrs K. B. Beattie, and A. C.
