At every\nopportunity he gave battle to these\nevil thing, but was, much to his sorrow,\nunable to extingu'sh them all, so he\nconceived the idea of traveling about\nfrom place to place, and carving\nlikenesses upon the rocks by the\nwaters where they would be seen by\nIndians afloat in canoes. The pictures\nserved as a warning that such creatures\nwere hiding in water near by waiting\nfor a chance to attack and devour.\nThere are Indians now living who\nmost carefully obey these warnings,\nand make no noise with their paddlss\nfor fear that the evil inhabitants of the\nwater will hear them and rise to destroy .them. If, by accident, some\nnoise should be made, the occupants of\nthe canoe will immediately rush for the\nshore.\nWhite men say there are no whales\nor other such monsters in these fresh\nwater lakes, bnt the Indian has lived\nhere longer, and seen more, and knows\ndifferent.\nBuys Horses and Buggy.\nHarry Fitzgerald returned yesterday\nfrom Vancouver and brought with him\ntwo smart looking horses and a handsome new buggy, all of which he has\nadded to the stock and equipment of\nthe livery firm of Fitzgerald & Bnrke.\nSend Two Dollars\nTo Pioneer News\nAnd have the paper mailed regularly\nto your address for one year. The d'stance\nfrom the old town to the Nelson site is\nthree quarters of a mile.\nA large part of it is wide and deep\ngulch unfit for man or beast to live on.\nTwo aged horses died of starvation\non it last winter.\nThe whole proposition to sell that\nNelson property as town lots on any\nterms is enough to make some people\nlaugh and others boil with indignation.\nThere was some laughter and much\nindignation in both New and Old Alberni when the people recovered from\nthe surprise occasioned by the first\nglare of the advertisements.\nSteps were at once taken to make\npublic in Victoria the true state of\naffairs in order that innocent people\nwith money might not be caught, and\nthat the reputation of Alberni might\nnot be injured by this rank adventure.\nProminent residents of Victoria who\nhave recently been in Alberni, and who\nknow the ground have assured the\nPioneer News that they will do what\nthey can to acquaint the public with\nthe facts.\nThe Pioneer News has previously\nwarned its readers of wild cat schemes\nthat might be sprung. E., started work this\nweek to locate a line for a wagon road\nfrom Goldstream to Mill Bay along\nSaanich inlet, and if the proposition is\nproved feasible the Provincial government will have the road built.\nThe proposed road would overcome\nthe obstacle to traffic that now exists\nin the shape of Sooke mountain, and\nmake Victoria easily accessible to many\nfarmers who are now practically shut\noff from the markets of the Capital\nCity.\nThe new route would also be of great\nadvantage to automobilists, as it would\nmake an easy run all the way from\nVictoria to Alberni, and this would\nmean considerable direct benefit to\nthis community.\nGood Grouse Shooting.\nEverybody and everybody's dog took\nto the woods last Monday, and the\nnumber of fat grouse in the district\nwas somewhat reduced. Many large\nbags were reported on the first day,\nand the Pioneers News has no proof in\ncontradiction of the various stories that\nhave been told by the hunters. It says:\nThe ho.vcultural society of Alberir\nis taking v'gorous steps to advertise to\nthe world ihe pecu'iar advantages of\nthat section as a fru't grow'ng district. The people of Vancouver island\nare well aware that fruit of all k'nds\ncan be grown in Alberni and its environs as well as in any sect'on of the I\nPacific slope, but the strangers need to\nbe educated. ROFF'S LETTER.\nThe letter contributed by Mr.William\nRoff to this issue of the Pioneer News\nis timely, and worthy of the interest of\nevery person at present resident or interested in^this community. It accentuates the suggestions of If st week\nthat it is not too early for the formation\nof a board of trade, or to take into consideration the advisability of forming a\nmunic'pality. Of course we have not\nyet suffic'ent population for a munxi-\npality, but it is such a very short time\ntill we will be qualified in this respect\nthat we should be prepared and awaiting the privilege. In the meantime a\nboard of trade, or even a more widely\nrepresentative body, could do much\nalong the lines of preserving the common utilities and advantages that ser-\nround us.\nBreak Down on Summit.\nAfter the remarkable record of fourteen thousand miles without an accident, made principally on the road between Nanaimo and Alberni, Walter\nThompson met with a mishap on the\nsummit on Saturday night last when\nthe shaft of his automobile broke. On arrival here he immediately\ndispatched a livery rig to the assistance\nof the belated travelers who were\nbrought into town in comfort, ar.d\nquite pleased with their experience.\nThe next day Edward Grandy, the New\nAlberni liveryman towed the d:sabled\nmachine back to Nanaimo where it was\nsaon made ready for the road again.\nCredit to Alberni.\nThe new addition to the AiTngton\nfotel is now ready for the accommodation of guests, and M. Permit me to take\na more public way of expressing approval of your action, and, by means\nof this letter, to be the first correspondent to thank -you for taking the initiative in this great, important and responsible undertaking, and compliment\nyou upon the success of your first\nefforts.\nI sincerely trust that the paper will\nbe profitable to yourself, a means of\nimmech'ate usefulness to the inhabitants of the present day, and an aid\ntowards making Alberni an important\ncity in the very near future.\nWhile thus writing you allow me to\ntake advantage of an opportunity\nwhich your paper affords.\nI am fully conscious of my recent advent into this neighborhood, but for\nthirteen years I have been connected\nwith it by family ties, and three years\nago I became personally acquainted\nwith it. I hope therefore that it will\nnot be thought impertinent on my part\nif I address some remarks upon what I\nthink ought to be done in preparatory\nwork.\nIt is patent to everyone that a city\nrequires many things which can be had\nin its infancy at almost nominal cosl\nwhich, if they are not then secured,\ncan only be obtained afterwards at an\nenormous price even if money can procure them.\nIf it is des'rable that A'berni should\ngrow every means should be taken now\nnot only to render it possible but to\ngive every facility to induce its growth.\nThe present inhab-'tants are not only\npioneers who should reap a benefit\nfrom their labors by an increase of\npopulation and consequent rise in the\nvalue of property, but they are trustees of posterity. Upon them great\nresponsibility rests. Upon their action\nthe future is greatly dependent.\nI have had frequent opportunities of\nmeeting many of them and am greatly\nimpressed with the soundness of judgment and good common sense prevailing among them. I have therefore the\nutmost confidence that they will rise to\nthe occasion and adopt a course of public action which will not only aid materially in the growth of the city, but reflect honor to them and gain the gratitude of future generations.\nI must not trespass upon your space\nwhich I know is limited so I will merely mention two things which I think\nare press-'ng.\nThe first is the water supply without\nwhich no city can live.\nThis includes water for household\nuse.\nFlushing of sewers.\nElectric l'ght.\nTramways.\nTelephones and everything requiring\npower.\nI believe the water rights can be reserved without any cost until the time\narrives to justify the creation of a\nmunicipality. \u00bb\nAnother essential for a prosperous\ncity is its promenades and open places\nfor air and recreation.\nNo location can give better opportunities for these than Alberni.\nThe river frontage is so grand that\nit commands to be reserved to the public, and says to all builders and other\nobstructionists, ' 'Hands off.''\nYours Faithfully,\nWILLIAM ROFF.\nAlberni, Sept. 2, 1907.\nWill Open Drug Store.\nW. S. Terry, of the firm of Terry &\nMarett, Victoria, was .in town this\nweek for the purpose of looking over\nthe field for a drug store opening. He\nwas highly pleased with the bus'ness\noutlook, and before he took his departure on Wednesday said he expected\nto have a store opened and ready for\nbusiness before the end of the month.\nThe stock will be the same in quality\nand variety as is carried by the firm in\nVictoria and this is sufficient assurance\nthat it will meet the needs and tastes\nof the people of Alberni.\nLAND ACT.\nALBERNI LAND DISTRICT.\nDistrict of Nootka.\nTake notice that Clarence Dawley of\nClayoquot, B.
