It is the intention of the company to work all ter so as to develop the property as rapidly as possible. NORTH STAB MINE. JJ ow Hoisting; Machinery New Roads Ore Bins and Other Developments. The North Star mine is one of Slue greatest silver-lead properties on ;the continent. Some thousands of tons of ore has already been shipped from this wine, but though it i.s located within 20 miles of Port Steele, tfce eost of transportation has teen so great as to discourage the active working of the mine. At present a force of some 35 HtfiM are at work making new developments so as to be in readiness for shipping on an extensive seale as soon as the branch road is completed. We have been in funned by Mr, Mann, that the branch will not be started until spring, and that it will be com pleted. by the 1st of .Tune. When the conditions are favorable for shipping, tlie output of (Vke mine will average from 100 te 150 tons daily. Tho company are now engaged iitr. sinking a double compartment shaft, al, a point nortli of the old vsMti-kings, tlie shaft is now down smmie 30 or 40 feet, and will be eoutirmed to a depth of 300 feet. A aew hoist is now on its way to the mine. New ore bins have been constructed, and the wagon road lias been extended to the several tunnels and shafts, Mr. D. D. Mann arrived at Fort Steele on Friday last, on his return from the mine. Mr. Mann informed a Pkospeutou reporter that as soon as the road Bias completed the mine would 'become a constant shipper, and that he was much pleased with the present condition of the jsraie. Mr. Ike Oppeulieimer of Van- fiiiittrar visited the North Star on .Monday, and on his return on Wednesday, said that he had visited a large number of mines, but the North Star had the largest showing of mineral on litec American Continent. Mining Notes. Empress:—Situated on S * *AsaS*1i3*»HSS*! per share,' and tlie owners of it aro not looking for purchasers even at that figure. The present daily shipment from tlie Le Roi is from 300 to 400 tons. There is also samples from the War Eagle, which recently sold for $000,000; from the Victoria, which sold a few days ago for a large sum to a Spokane banker, and from other mines which have made their discoverers or pur chasers wealthy. The famous Cariboo mine, which was recently reorganized and is paying big dividends monthly, also is represented by a number of samples, The latter mine—the Cariboo —is particularly interesting to Omaha visitors, as it is in the same district and adjoining the Lemon mine and now being developed by Omaha capital. The Lemon mine and adjoining claims owned by the company, have a fine exhibit, and one which for one peculiarity will hold the attention of a mining man. It is an ideal ore to work, for in place of having to send it to a smelter, the values can easily be saved by a stamp mill and concentrators. There is one piece of ore from the Lemon mine, weighing over 100 pounds, development work on which is being pushed and which is rapidly nearing the producing stage, The ore is still increasing in value, as does that of the other mines of the district, as depth is attained, but it has already reached and passed the paying point: Aside from the gold ores, one of the interesting features of the exhibit of British Columbia is a block of Crow's Nest coal, from the 100-foot vein, to gel towhici a railroad was built, Turks are to Leave Crete. Canea, island of Crote, Oct. 7. —Ismail Boy, tho civil govornor of tlie island of Crote, has in formed the Mussulman notables that the sultan will withdraw the Turkish troops from Crete in accordance with tho demands of Groat Britain, Russia, Prance and Italy, who on Wednesday presented to tho porte a colloc live note calling for a withdrawal of the Ottoman forces and requiring an answer within a week from that date, WINDERMERE DISTRIOT. A New Mining Distriot With High Grade Ores. The town of Windermere is situated on the east side of Windermere Lake, about 70 miles north of Po rt Steele, The population numbers about 200, There are two general supply stores, two hotels and a number of private residences. Many ranchers are located at this point As a mining district, Windermere is rapidly coming to the front, and many promising claims have been located, and during the past year considerable development work has been done. The following is the distances to the principal mines from Windermere: Salmon beds* 3 miles; Foot of the Mountains 18 miles; Pretty Girl 22 miles; Sitting Bull 25 miles; Dividend Group 24 miles; Sweepstake Group 24 miles; Alps Group 25 miles. The Salmon Beds are 3 miles from Windermere, and is the crossing of the Columbia river, where the government has provided two ferry boats for the ■tccommodatiou of the public Prom Windermere to the foot of the mountains it is 18 miles, the intervening region consisting of rolling country, dotted with many fine ranches, under various stages of cultivation, and a large amount of splendid grazing land. It is 1.5 miles from tiie salmon beds to the foot of tlie mountains and a wagon rond will be constructed by the government early next spring. PRETTY (I I HI, GROUP! This property is about 22 miles from Windermere, and is now being worked by a large English syndicate, tlie group consists of eight claims which extend from Boulder Creek, over tlie summit to Law Creek, Considerable work has been done on these claims during the past summer, ore has bean shipped, a tunnel has been run for several hundred feet, and the company is now engaged in sinking a shaft on the ore body The character of the ore is a gray copper which assays very high. SITTING BULL GROUP. About three miles from the Pretty Girl is the Sitting Bull group of claims, located by Messrs. Johnson, Kenny and Batiche. The group consists of 4 claims, the Sitting Bull, Colorado, Mary J and Alice. The Sitting Bull and Mary J have been bonded to a Nelson syndicate for the sum of $40,000. A large number of men are now engaged in developing the pro perty. The character of the ore is a clean high grade galena carrying gray copper, assays have run as high as 742 ounces in silver to the ton. DIVIDEND GROUP. Just over the divide from the above group, is situated the Dividend group, located by J, H. Taylor, Wm. Haupt and Harry Mathers, This group consists of four claims, the Dividend, Paying Teller, Silvor Thread and Echo. On tho Dividend and Paying Teller, the paystreak is about 4 feet in width, and can be traced for 300 feet. On tho Sil ver Thread the vein has a width of li fool. Tlie ore is of the same character as that found on the Sitting Bull claim, a high grade galena carrying gray coppor, A cabin has boon built, and ar rangemeiits aro now being made to develop the proporty. A Hue waterfall is situated about a half mile below the claims, wliich can be ulilissod m tlio development of tlie claims, IRON QUHKN, Across the creek from tho Dividend lies the Iron Queen, located by Johnson aud Stockdale. Thero is over 10 feet of ore in sight, that will run 72 ounces in silver to the ton. HORSE THIEF CREEK. Joining the Iron Queen on tlie north is the Sweepstake and Independent, located by Wm. Haupt and J. H. Taylor. On this property we find the largest showing of mineral in the district, but a certain amount of development work must be done to ascertain the extent of the ledge. The vein consists of an Iron capping which is impregnated with gray copper, under this cap galena is found, of a grade similar to that on the Sitting Bull group. THE ALPS GROUP. Consists of 4 claims located by Emil Banks, and are known as the Alps No. 1, Alps No. 2, Pet and Monaco. The ledge ou these claims is from 3 to 5 feet in width, the ore is similar in character as that found on the Sitting Bull property. The Ruth, located by Dave Newell joins the Sweepstakes on the north, and has a ledgo 12 feet iu widtli, with a rich paystreak of 3 feet. Crackerjack, on Boulder Creek near the Sitting Bull, located by Steve Young, has about 4 feet of gray copper. Massie, an extension of the Crackerjack has 31 feet of gray copper. Zero, on Horse Thief Creek, has an iron cap 30 feet in width, and an open cut 12 feet in length and 8 feet deep, shows peacocli copper, QUOTATIONS FOR BAR SILVER, Repulsed a Dervish Attack. Cairo, Oct, 2—Reinforcements have been ordered from Omdurman to Ghedaref, where the force under Colonel Parsons has repulsed another Dervish attack with slight loss. There is no news from Pashoda, but in all probability Major Marcband will shortly evacuate his position there. Political. Mr. C. W. D. Clifford, of Inverness, is in Victoria. Mr. Clifford says that the result of the Cassiar election has not yet beon announced, and that the ballot boxes are scattered round at various places. Mr. Clifford has no doubt that lie and Captain Irving havo been returned; that result having been ceded loug ago. Mr. Clifford says that he still adheres to his independent position, and would not know what he was prepared to do in the House until the Legislature met. He favours tlio opening up of the country and is opposed to anything in the shape of a "cheese-paring" policy, but Mr. Clifford intimated that if the Senllin Administration is prepared to adopt a progressive course, calculated lo result in the development of flic resources of the Province, lu* would be found to be working and voting with them.—Victoria Times. To the Witnesses Fight. Walker. Minnesota. Oct. ti.— A hard fight with Indians occur- ed yesterday and reports from the battle on the other side of Leech lake are somewhat con- Hiding although all reports a- grec that the result has been considerable shedding of blood and the loss of life on both sides. No word has come from the front for several hours, which fact is considered something ominous, The most serious report is that the detachment of troops with Gen. Bacon was massacred, the general himself being among tlie dead. Three newspaper correspondents, Prill, of the St. Paul Pioneer Press; Bolton, of the Minneapolis Tribune, and Knap- pen, of the Minneapolis Times, are known to have been in the tight, and one report is that they have been killed, while another says that they are now prisoners in the hands of the Indians, This little town has been full of excitement all day aud as reports from the other side of the lake come in people become frau- tic aud efforts have been made to get up a force to go and help the troops. This will be sent in a few hours. Reinforcements are coming on a special train from i Brainerd. However additional ! soldiers are mosl needed and the i feeling is general that thoy can nut come loo soon. The light been the head and centre of this whole difficulty, Ex-Marshall Bd, Harris, a Walker half-breed, was struck, his arm being broken. This shot seemed to lie a signal for immediately shots came from every direction and three men dropped and were carried to llie rear. 'I'lie soldiers wlm are veterans knew whal lo do and at the first shot found shelter and awaited another volley iu led lliem whore hunt, (leu, Bacon and Ma Wilkinson steadied Iheir men i eiieou raging words inul i a second volley lhe Indians -I'-li'cl ;u rush uu llie sul ■s, EE ■ raiiling volley From mei llie iini'umieg slopped the . nsh nick tho Indians, if t hem having been ilu* soldiers' lire. 1'ho tiro from lhe villagt lecame mor • scattering, and ihe ioldiers made a hue charge ami trove them hack, though the ! I tiring continued. The steamer • ion which they had crossed came f;as well as thoso used by lhe ' newspaper corresponden wero lired upon by tho Indian with effect. Inspector Tin' received a shot in the leg bad his sleeve riddled. Prill, of J the f Tribune, and tho Times correspondent, had landed previously In the arrival of tha soldiers, a previous experience having made them believe tlie dangers light. The men on the steamers saw them in the tight using their revolvers vigorously until they were compelled to lly, closely- pursued by the painted savages. Late last night an Indian who arrived from Bear island states that all the men out of uniform had been killed but could not toll how many soldiers had been shot. No direct word came from cither of th« correspondents who are with the troops or from the soldiers. This i.s looked on as additional cause for apprehension, as it is believed Gen- Bacon would have sent some official communication had il been possible to do so, No word whatever has come from him, Neither has it been possible to confirm the report that the entire detachment has been wiped out. The outlook at this writing is that the agency Indians may go on the warpath at any moment: They have been holding a council and reports are received every half hour by runners de New Yirk and Eas. WHY IT OCCURED. The Pillagers and other neighboring Indians of the White Earth reservation claim to have many reasons for their outbreak, although the direct trouble with the Pillagers comes over attempts to bring in sonieof the Indians to the United States court at Duluth in connection with liquor selling cases. Their grievances goes back many years and there have been legislative and other attempts to settle them, one of the latest being the Nelson law regarding the sale of timber on Indian lands. However, the Indians claimed that tho method of disposing of this was both cumbersome and expensive and that they were the losers. In regard to serving as witnesses in illegal liquor selling cases they claimed that tho deputy marshals left, them to tiiul their own way from Dnlntli without having paid thorn the proper mileage. This is denied by the deputies. The leader of tho trouble with the Pillagers is one old warrior Hog-ah-nia-ge-spig, not a chlof, who recently returned from court ami was soon afterwards sought again by the deputies. Ile alleged ill treatment iii being turned adrift penniless in llllllllll and aroused lhe other Indians lo protest, againsl the way lie claimed to linve been treated, The United Stales marshals insists thai the old mini's lll.li> is unfounded, but the reds Imve been stirred up to such pitch ihal (rouble became I'he soldiers were sin I,1BIapparently unavoidable, In"vlow wilh Uie past though coffee making had com-of the deeply sealed feeling of oiinlrv, and ■•l**s-,ni(,,„„,,|i Suddenly ft shot was ill treatment in regard lo their ileiely Irom the j |j,.,,(| f,.om n„, house of Hog-uh- timber lunds and their lands and Mr. Laurier has|mali-ge-shig, llie Indian who had | rights iu general. THE PLEBISCITE. She Opinions of the Pr««B. The Importance of the Vote. MAIL COMMENT. The Mail suys: It seems probably that when the full returns come in that there will be for this province a slight affirmative majority. At all events such is the tone of many of the rural districts. The province of Manitoba gave a majority of five thousand for prohibition. In the 1882 plebiscite there rolled up a majority of 11,522. The far west may be expected to bo slightly on the"dry"s1de. There is a marked division of lhe country on tho subject as far as ligures go. Centres of population, cities and towns, reject the proposition, some by large majorities, as in Toronto, Montreal and Quebec, the ligures there being respectively 8,000, 10,000 and 0,000, but tlio rural districts are the other way round. Another interesting feature of tho returns is the attitude of the province of Quebec, Tlie campaign tliere against prohibition bore fruit in the ballot box. On the whole it, seems probable over thu whole counlry thure will be a small prohibition majority. A good many people imagine this would mean the enactment of a law. This is a mistake. The majority of a million would enact nothing. The plebiscite was really an order upon the prohibition, ist.s to put up or shut up, and we rather think the government will toll them lo "shut up," MONTREAL I'ltESS COMMENT. Montreal,* The Herald says it does uot. anticipate that the prohibitionists will seriously urge immediate legislation. N'o reasonably person, it thinks, will deny llie niter futility and Lho mischievotisness of any attempt lo Impose a sumptuary law on Quebec, in face of the public sentiment as ho»*,il« as yesterday's returns show it to be. The Star says that under no circumstances whatever, even in the event of all the provinces showing majorities for prohibition, will Sir Wilfrid Laurier commit his government to a prohibition bill. tahte's paper speaks. Montreal.—La Patrie, Tarte's paper, says that as only one fourth of the electors have voted that one fourth cannot, with any reason, expeot to regulate the aft'airs of Ihe country and to impose its wish. UQUOH MEN ,1 I'm LA.N'T. Toronto.—Liquor men here »re quite jubilant over the result of the plebiscite They say Ihey are certain the government will never introduce prohibition on the evident reversal of sentiment in Ontario and tlie large majority in Quebec. A WINNIPEG BANK ROBBED. $62,000 Was Taken From The Vnulte of Molson's Bank. The Molson's bank in this city has been robbed of a large sum of money, said to be in the neighborhood of $62,000, The bank officials and solicitors are very reticent in regard to Iho matter, although they do not deny tliat the bank has boon robbed, the details of the affair are. kept from the public, Montreal, Oct. 0,—Mr. Wolf- erstan Thomas, general manager of the Molson's bank, confirms the report, of the recent bank robbery at Winnipeg, lie was notified early this morning thai $02,000 had been taken. Out of this $25,000 was in unnogofiablu notes, so that $87,000 is Ihe real loss of tho haul;. Manager Phepoo has been communicated with and was ex peeled in the oity lasl evening. The robbery was not discovered until Tuesday al uoon so thai il can be safely inferred that the safe was not broken inlo or any evidence left in the building by the robbers. In fact it is asserted that the vault was opened by the regular combination. This adds much to the mystery as only one man in the bank knows the whole combination, each clerk using the vault locking a portion. The reticence of the solicitors under the circumstances is hard to understand, since the indefinite rumors that have been flying about are apt to do more harm in the way of preventing the apprehension of the criminals than a full statement of the case. If it were known whether it was money or securities which had been stolen and if money tlie number of the bills and the denomination it would assist the police in tracing the matter. The silence is pari ial ly accounted for by the seeming lack of authority on the part of both acting manager and solicitors to give out any information. They both declare they have uo authority to make anything public. The amount of money kaid lo have been taken seems rather large for the bank to have had on hand, but it is pointed oul that jusl at this season of the year, at the commencement of the wheat season, all the banks carry large amounts of money. All the members of the bank stall'were al work yesterday as usual. Barbarian Brown Harried. It. 10. lj. I (rown was married at the Driard hotel, Victoria, Monday evening, lo Miss Higgins of New York.
