On Wednesday evening next
the ladies of tin.' Church of England of this city will givo a
grand .ball in tho Opera House.
The object is to provide a fund
for the purchase of a church
organ. The affair promises to
ho very successful, uml doubtless
will be the most important social
function this season.
Thoy nro Prosperous,
Indian Agent Galbraith visited
the Indians at Tobacco Plains
hist week and reports them iu a
very prosperous condition. They
have had good crops this year,
and the building of the Crow's
Nest Railway has givon them a
most profitable market. They
got lie. por lb. for their oals,
and anxious to realize the most
out of the high price, have sold
themselves short of that grain.
As a whole, the condition of the
Indians in this district was never
so good as it is now.
THE SOCIAL LINE.
Editor Prospector; Sir,—
There was a select dance given on
Friday, the 5th hist., in the
Opera House, by ouo or two parties who consider themselves tin
elite of the town. It musi have
boon quite an undertaking for
tlie givers of tlio dance to lind
thoir equals in Fort Steelo, for
one can safely say that without
exception the population of Fort
Steele consists of working men
and women. If will be quite a
loss to the public dances Die absence of ihe above parties, for
naturally they will nol euro to
dance or associato with those
who are beneath them in a social
position, yours,

Work to Begin at Once and to be Completed
Early Next Summer.—Speculations
As to Future Movements.
The Canadian Pacilic Railway there will be immediately a large
has at lust announced its inten- tonnage of oro to bo obtained
tion regarding tho railway con- thore,
noction lo bo given to Fort Neil Macleod Curran, manager
Steelo. of the Nortli Star, recently told
A branch is to leavo tho main The Prospector that with rail-
line at tho nearest practicable f way accommodation they, would
point, run into Fort Steele, and
thence up the St, Mary's River
to the Noi'th Star and Sullivan
mines.
This announcement was made
by M. J. Haney, Superintendent
of Construction on the Crow's
Nest Railway, on Tuesday last.
'Die information was made publio
here by P. GI, Nash, Assistant,
Superintendent of Construction,
Mr. Nash was seen by a representative of Tun Prospector.
He said tliat within a week a
corps of engineers would bo at
work here definitely locating tho
lino. He could uot say, of
immediately begin average continuous shipments of at least 100
tons a day. This winter they
will got out 8,000 tons, which
will bo ready for transportation
some considerable time before
the1 railway will ho ready to
handle it. Arrangements woro
being made to-Shave the ore
hauled out hy waggon to llio
river, but it will bo more satisfactory to see it shipped on the
railway direct from the mines,
Tho Sullivan group will also bo
in readiness to ship heavily lhe
coming summer.
Beyond these mi
 nines and in a
course, whore the line would be'| northwesterly direction are the
exactly placed, that being the!splendid properties ut the head
business of the engineers. of Pyramid Creek, Tlie:,:. prop-
striiction begin?'' was asked.
'■Right away, I expect,"
"And will the branch ho completed as soon as the other parts
of the road ?"
"Yes, that is the intention."
"So thai Fort Steole will have
railway connection as soon as
any other point on the main line
as far west as this'*"'
"Yes; tho Company wants to
be in readiness for business as
soon as possible, and there will
be a good deal of oro to haul
from the mines in the St. Mary's
region. The work of construction will be pushed with all possible despatch."
"Is it the intention to continue
this branch up the valley beyond
the North Star and Sullivan
group?"
"I can't say what the Company's plans may be in that respect, but the policy no doubt
will bo to provide facilities for
any business tho country may
havo to offer."
The above news will bo very
satisfactory to this city and district, who havo had a natural
anxiety to learn just what the
intention of the Railway Company was witli respect lo this
pluee. There was never any
douhi felt here but that Fort
Sleele would get railway connection, but the question has been, -.
When? Tho matter is now settled, and the pooplo of this city
and lhe mining men of the rich
distriot surrounding can lay their
plans accordingly.
'I'he building of the branch
line from this city up llie St.
Mary's River will fix Fort Steele
as the central business point in
the southern portion of Basl
Kootonay. A glance ut lhe map
will plainly inilieiile that fuel,
The, St. Mary's branch ills evident is not iiileniled lo slop ill
the North Star unil Sullivan
minos. That probably is an oh
joclivo point foi'tho present, unil
the reason il Is to bo buill, with
such expedition us Mr. Nash's
announcement indicates, is that
oped dicing the past simnnor by
the Pyramid Kootenay Mining
Co., and work is to bo rosumod
again early in the spring by it
force of HH1 mon ut, least. Thirty
men wore worked the greater
part of last summer.
From all this it will ho seen
that thero is a largo traffic in
sight already for n road from
Fort Steelo up tbo St. Mary's
River. As is woll known a
charter is now being applied for
for a railway from this placo to
the Sullivan group, and this
movement it is shrewdly suspected is being made under cover by
the Great Northern Railway, In
any event, if the C. P. R. failed
to touch at Fort Steele the whole
of the business of an independent railway up the St. Mary's
would go via the Kootenay
River, and would fall into the
hands of tho Great Northern at
Jennings, Mont. The Great
Northern is now building a boat
at Jennings lo catch this traffic
at Fort Sleele. and the only possible way it can bo headed off is
by the C. P. R. itself building
from hore up the St. Mary's and
catching as woll what trade it
can from tho river bonis here.
The Canadian Pacific has already had a very unpleasant
experience of Groat Northern
competition iu West Kootonay,
and under circumstances almost
identical with thoso which would
exist if Ihe Ureal Northern
should "steal a march" and gel
in ahead of tlie C. P. B. on Sl.
Mary's River. The Kaslo and

NOTE AND COMMENT.
The number of persons killed
on lho railways ol the Uniieil
Kingdom during last year was
1,008 and n,877 were injureil. Oi'
lho nunilier killed 1)3 were pus-
sengors, 177 were sorvants, and
the remainder were either persons killed in passing over level
crossings, trespassers, suicides,
etc. The passengers injured
numbered 1,586, It is, however,
to be noted that only live passengers wero killed and 388 injured by accidents of trains, rolling stock, permanent way, etc.,
the remainder of the casualties
being attributed to accidents
from other causes, including accidents from the want of caution
or misconduct ol' the sufferers.
Five deaths only of passengers
from train accidents is remarkably few, lhe average for tlm
previous years having been 15,
In addition, the companies have
returned 85 persons killed nml
Ll,002 injureil from aecidonls
that occurred on their premises,
but which were not connected
with railway vehicles. Tlie total
number of passenger journeys
during the year, exclusive ol'
journeys by season ticket holders, were 980,339,077, so thut the
proportion of passengers killed
mul injured wus oil',' iu 10,541,-
287 killed und one in 818.121 injured.
Toronto Telegram: Those journals which laboured lo excuse
the surrender of lhe Laurier
Government lo tlie C. 1'. R'y,
through its agents! the British
Columbia Southern crowd, were
wont to dwell upon the enormous
engineering difficulties in tlie
way of constructing the Crow's
Nest Pass Railway.
It was useless to argue with
these journals or to cite facts
proving tliat the Crow's Nest
Puss Railway was. next to a
prairie road, the easiest sort of
line to build.
Ono of the chief leaders in tlio
chant about the huge expense
and appalling difficulties of the
work was Mr. Edward Farrar,
who at lust admits the truth ns
will bo seen by this extract from
his recent writings to the Globe:
•'The grade through the puss
will be a 1 per cent grade; in
other words, it will be by odds
the easiest route across the
mountains, far and away easier
than any of the American routes.
A 1 per cent grade means lhat
tlie road will be as level all the
way as that between Montreal
and Ottawa. A 2.35 had heen
determined on, but Mr. Haney
found that 1 per cent was practicable with some extra expenditure. "
Of course the ability of Mr.
Haney has improved tlie natural
advantages ot lhe Crow's Nost
route, hut lhe iiiituiul advantages
were llmre lo he improved. Tlie
fact llial, lhe Rockies are lo he
crossed via lhe Crow's Is'esl
roiile ul a grade ol' I per cent is
proof thnl the Llborul journals
of Ontario were either ignorant
or dishonosl when thoy shrieked
ulioul the enormous engineering
