Tliere are already several very fine mines in the district, and others will certainly be added be fore long. For a young country the rate at which it now opened up is wonderful. Development work on the Hot Punch consists of one incline shaft 70 feet in length, and a tunnel, wliich is now in 35 feet. The trend of the vein is north and south, and dips at an angle of 85 degrees. The ledge is from 2 to 4 feet in width with a pay steak- from a foot to a foot and a half of solid galena carrying copper and gold. TO KILL THE KAISBB. Plot Hatched in Alexandria Frustrated by the Egyptian Polico. Alexandria, Egypt, Oct. l-l— The Alexandria police have arrested nine Italian anarchists since last night aud have thereby frustrated a plot against Emperor William, now on his way to the Holy land to bo present at the consecration of the Church of our Savior at Jerusalem. The first was a cafe-keeper, a well known anarchist, in whose house the polico discovered two wire-bound bombs of great strength and full of bullets. This arrest was made in consequence of the notification from the Italian consul general at Cairo that two anarchists had left Cairo for Port Said, The police investigation showed that the arrested cafe-keeper had bribed the steward of a steamer sailing today from Alexandria to Port Said and Syria to take on board a number of bombs. Apparently the anarchists intended originally to use the bombs a* the Palais Abidin at Cairo while Emperor William and the khedive were there. When the kaiser decided not to visit Egypt the anarchists changed their plans and decided to attack him in Palestine. The German consulate has expressed its warmest thanks to the government. The Cairo anarchists who left for Port Said have not yet been arrested. The Windfall. This property is situated south is*»*t of the North Star group. We learn that the owner, Hank Eller, has recently uncovered a body of galena. Southern Cross. EL J. Walsh has taken a large force of men to Boulder creek to work on the Southern Cross. Tbe ore on the property is a free milling gold quartz. Ore From the Sullivan Group. Mr. E. C. Smith, manager of the Sullivan group, came down from the mine ou Sunday. Mr. Smith says that the proporty is looking better every day. The vein is about 120 feet between this walls, and on the hanging wall side there is about 80 feet of clean shipping ore. The vein inatter between the clean ore and the foot wall is composed of solid galena and iron, capped with carbonates. Mr. .Smith left some beautiful specimens of galena and carbonates at the pkospectoh office. The average of five samples taken at different points across the ore body showed the following values:-$1)0.24; $27.72; $20.32; #60.92, and $71,511; or an average value of $-15.15 per ton. The company will push development work on its big property. A wagon road is now being constructed from tho mine to ' Kimberley, where it will connect with the North Star road. The company has ordered a boiler, pump, hoist and other machinery, which is expected at Fort Steele by the time the wagon rojul is completed. Manager fi'. P. Hogan is expected here by the 20th, then all arrangements will bo completed for tho dev fcopmeul of the properly. r The big ore body, 120 feet In width, is of a shipping grade, QUOTATIONS FOB BAB SILVER. Obituary. The grim reaper was again ou his fatal rounds on Tuesday evening and selected Mr. John McMahon as his victim. Mr. McMahon was taken ill a few days previous to his death, and was taken to the St. Eugene Hospital. Mr. McMahon has been a resident of Moyie City for nearly two years, and was a member of the firm of McMahon Bros at that place. He was a quiet good natured man, and had a host of friends all over the district who will regret to learn of his melancholy death. Judge Walkem'a Decision. Judge Walkem has decided that a mineral claim crown granted since the statute of 1893 does not carry with it the absolute right to the surface of the claim. Also that a crown grant to a claim does not convey the water-rights on the said claim, as the principal of riparian ownership has been abrogated by tlio Water-Privileges Act of 1892. COLOMBIA CUTS ITALY. Ac From the List of Diplomatic quaintances. Washington, Oct. 14.—On inquiry at the Colombian legation with reference to the suspension of relations between Colombia and Italy the charge d'affaires made the following statement: '■It is true that the Colombian government has passed a decree suspending relations with Italy. I have not seen tlie text of the decree but I am advised officially that it guarantees to Italians Ihe protection of tlie laws, besides that the Ilritish legation is charged with protecting Italian interests in Colombia. "This act of the Colombian government i.s without doubt the result of popular indignation at the hostile measures adopted by the Italian governmenl last summer with its lleet in Colombian waters on the pretext of some failure on the part of Colombia in fulfilling the award of President Cleveland In llie Cerrnti case. So Says The Editor of the British Realm, Talking on the Chinese Question. N. P. Hamilton-Brown, editor and proprietor of the British Realm, says in an interview regarding recent developments in China: "You people in the west have no idea of how close we have been to war within the past two months. Shortly before leaving Hongkong I was a guest on one of our cruisers, and was not surprised to learn that twice, if not thrice, at Cheefoo, our ships had been cleared for action. Telegraph wires had been cut and the British ships stood facing the Chinese and Russians only awaiting the word to begin hostilities. The guns were loaded and the men slept beside them ready for action. Tlie word did not come. •'But come it must and the sooner the better. If we have a war at ouce we shall win hands down; if we wait until Russia is ready, we shall still win, but at a terrible cost of blood and treasure. Now we are masters of the situation. Our ships are the best and they are manned by British tars. A few years hence our position may not be so strong When Russia has completed the great trans-Siberian railway she will be able to pour thousands of troops into Manchuria, and that railway is expected to be completed in 1903. "One important factor in the situation is the attitude of Japan. She is intensely anti-Russian and pro-British. A war would at once see an active Anglo- Japanese alliance, and within a week' Japan could throw into China 150.000 to 200,000 troops, fully equipped and with an excellent commissariat. Of course when this was comes off, as come it will, the Canadian Pacific railway steamships will bo at once used as auxiliary cruisers. Their guns nre at Victoria, 11. (E, and at Hongkong, and I am lold that the vessels can be put on a war fooling in a few days. "The betrayal of Hrilisli interests during llm past two mouths by the Tsutig-Li-Yamen, particularly in llie matter of railwuy concessions, is undoubtedly due lo lhe inllnuiiee of Li Hung 'Chang; ami I voice lho seiitiinenl of all Englishmen interested in China when 1 say Unit lhe sooner we teach in a lesson the belter for the whole empire" W. Wheeler will leavo for FEARS A FIGHT. Van Home Says Jim Hill Will Invade British Columbia. The Great Northern i.s making ready for a great struggle with the Canadian Pacific, Tho traffic of British Columbia is lo bo the irize of battle. Back of the Canadian Pacific will be its powerful agents in the dominion government; back of the Great Northern will be all the big American railways, which all hope to share in the gain once the grip of the Canadian octopus is broken. That the war i.s coming i.s stated on the highest authority— that of the .Canadian Pacific's president. Sir William Van Home, president of the Canadian Pacific railroad, was a guest at luncheon at the Manitoba club in Winnipeg, given on Monday by A. M. Nanton, president of the board of trade. Sir William's health was proposed, and during tho course of his reply he stated that tho Corbin railway interests had been turned over to the Great Northern Railway Company, and that company would probably be found at Ottawa at the next session of parliament seeking legislation that would enable them to build a line in southern British Columbia and cut into the trade of that region. As such a road would compete with the Crow's Nest pass road, in a rich mineral district. Sir William declared it would be a shame if Canadians did not .get all the trade resulting from the Canadian Pacilic road, as it had been built by public subsidies. - Spokesman Review. It is reported that the Great Northern has a number of surveyors south of Fort Steele, looking over the country, in search of the best route from the south. Jim Hill has his eye on the great coal fields of this district, and it is evident ho don't intend to lose the large carrying trade of the Fort Steele district. Depot At the Fort Steele Junction. On Tuesday the 18th inst, construction was commenced on the depot at 22 siding, on what is called by the Crow's Nest Railway Co. the Fort Steele Junction. The Whole Country Will be Mining Camps. D. D. Maun returned this morning from a visit of considerable duration in British Columbia. Tho Tribune found Mr. Mann endeavoring to open his mail between lho interviews and visits of those having business witli him at tho olliee of the Dauphin railway. Ho snid that the whole west wns in a moro prosperous condition than ho had ever known it boforo. A largo amount of development work is boing dono in tho mines and shipping will become active ns soon as tho railways now building are completed. There are now about 70 men steadily employed in development on th.' mines in which Mr. Mann is interested, and the further they get down the better the prospects look. There is, however, greater activity in British Columbia mining than people ever imagine, and Mr. Mann believes that the whole country from the summit of the Rockies to the coast will be dotted over with mining camps and mills, and reduction plants will be as plentiful as flour mills on the prairie. The whole country will become one great mining camp and ono of the greatest fields for the production of gold, silver, copper and lead in the world.- -Winni- pe(/ Tribune. THE PROHIBITION VOTE. No Official Statement ie at Hand. Quebec Forward Says That Pro- hibtion is Defeated. With respect to the prohibition plebiscite the general opinion is that the vote was so unsatisfactory that the federal government cannot bo expected to introduce any legislative action in tlie nature of a general prohibition law. Nol only was the case satis- ictory to Mr. Harty and his •iends, if was of widespread iiu- ortanco as it disposed of tho Inonstrous allegation that tho itire provincial cabinet had inspired to raise a boodle fund ' lUlO.OOO for the expressed pur- ise of debauching the constitli- lcy. The counsel for the potion behalf of the censer- /ive party, admitted tliat there is not one word of truth in it, or en suspicion of justification ' this charge; an admission Wliich drew from the court a iioner, With stern and richly deserved casti- gation. Though knowing full well that this atrocious charge was without: the slightest foundation Mr. Whitney, with his chief supporters and leading papers, has been working il for all it was worth for some months past; it is not by any such means tliat thoy can expect to obtain the confidence and support of the country. DOING THE SQUARE THING. It gives one more than ordinary satisfaction to note an editorial in tho Ottawa Citizen this week upon the Doukhobortsis, tho Russian colonists it is proposed to locate in tlie Norlh West. When first the project was made public, it was prophesied in these letters that the papers which hud with such evident pleasure persistently maligned the Galicians, would quickly turn their mud batteries upon the now coiners, and the prophecy has boon amply verified, for within "-1 hours the assault began. Further information however showed the more than ordinary injustice of this course, and the Citizen is striving manfully to atone for its error. The article in question admits that their Is excellent reason to believe these people are moral, intelligent, thrifty and industrious, and their continued existence in Russia has boon made well nigh unbearable on account of religious persecution, and that they aro akin in their religious convictions to the Society of Friends, than whom there is not a better sect in the Christian Church. It further gives publicity to the statement, before suppressed, that all who are brought to Canada will have sufficient means to establish themselves without assistance from the State, and that there is every reason to believe they will make good citizens. It is to be hoped that Oitizon's contemporaries will show like commendable desire to be fair in their treatment of this matter. THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON. The Mail |»w»v««tot\ SATURDAY. OCT! Beset on All Sides by Envious and Powerful Foes. London. Oct. 12.—The Marquis of Salisbury resumed his duties at the foreign office in an unusually dogged mood, a complete antithesis of his ordinary gentle treatment of the officials. He was extremely disgruntled at the way official matters concerning China aud Fashoda have been turning out, although publicists of all shades of opinion have been bitterly complaining at tho almost complete ignorance in which the country has been left respecting till foreign questions. This wits especially the case with Pashoda, and it bred want of confidence in the government even among thoir own supporters, which has beeu amply demonstrated by the daily outcry of the conservative press against the climb down on the part of Great Britain, which Ihey evidently foresee. The reversal of the order of things in China has also boen al theme for lamentations at the Marquis of Salisbury's inverte- brateness. The dispatch of Cossacks and Held guns to guard the Russian legation at Pelcin, iu addition to marines, as sent by other embassies, is considered very significant. Tho British premier, however, seems to realize that trouble is brewing in the east, as large quantities of war stores are being sent to Hong Kong while tlio lirst class cruiser Terrible has boen ordered to join hor sister ship lhe Powerful at tlio "bina station as soon as some t'op.iii's are completed, These cruisers aro llio largest in the world. Uncmsy Days in Transvaal. l)isi|iiioliiig news from tin Transvaal has reached tho Brit ish foreign office. President Kruger has commanded British subjtcts in the Transvaal to join the Burgher forces against the rebellious chief, Mofou, who is preparing for battle on a large scale. All roads in northern Transvaal are held by armed Kaffirs and the Boers are likely to have a difficult task. President Kruger has the letter of law on his side in ordering British subjects in tho Transvaal to join the Burgher forces, but the British declare they will refuse to fight for the Boers while they are disenfranchised. Americans at Manila. The Times is publishing a series of letters from Manila describing the American achievements there. Its correspondent, referring to American volunteers, warmly praises I heir work-, but adds that thero is no question that the men are anxious to go home. He says: "Their brief experience in actual warfare established a nolablo fact; it proved them courageous, decent, high-minded soldiers, worthy of every confidence and cheerful in all circumstances. Hi the laurels they have gained are small in comparison with those wliich rewarded tho heroism of their comrades at Santiago, they are none the less honorable, for men could not have endured j moro or worked harder than Ihey, or shown more valor." Pie on the Mountain. Editor, the Phosprotok, Silt:—To be successful in our ventures here, is happiness, whether il be in blowing soap bubbles or making an empire, or in lli* more momentous under- Inking of catching a Ilea or wooing a woman, and failure iu any of these yield a corresponding degree of disappointmonl and woe. Among Ihe many little failures and worries that we meet with every duy is our tit lot' inability to mnke "eatable pio". Whllothe I uigue seems to be about the proper stuff, by experience we found that ventilation was quite essential, and accordingly sunk a few shafts through the capping, but iu cross-cutting we find that: the moisture has all gone into tho footwall. "We like pie" when the formation is favorable. Whut we think is needed is some practical system of drainage. Will some one. of the many readers of the Puos- pectou, kindly suggest a way to keep the water out of the foot wall, "so called nnder-crust". Yours truly 1)10 Kook. Kimberley, Oct., 19, 1890. We trust that some one will undertake to furnish "De Kook'' with a receipt for making pie. Our worthy friend is noted as a "pie-eater", and while in solitude on the mountain, working his mine for tlie expected home- stake, his mind wanders to tho days past gone, and his appetite is continually calling for liis only want, "Pie".—Ed. Fort Steelo, Oct. Til, "De Kook":—When Dame Nature made footwalls they were of certain degrees of hardnc and so it is in malting pios. It is evident that your gangue, as you call it. is very rich and as* says high in juice. We would suggest that in making your walls, that you use nothing but Hour, a little water and the necessary amount of shortening, kneading as thoroughly as possible, roll Uiin and place on plate, then generously sprinkle a "putty coat" of Hour on the foot-wall, if this i.s not siiflieionl, mix a lillie Hour with thogitnguo and 1 think you will llnd that your trouble iu milking "pic on the mountain" will bo ovor, S.
