SUler FOKT STEELE BUSINESS DIRECTORY The Supply Point of the Fort Steelo District and East Kootonay. Fort Steele is the geographical centre oi this district, also the commercial centre. Iu the past the entile business of this district was done at Sleele. At tho present time Foit Steole commands the commercial interests of South Eastern Kootenay. More capital is invested at this point than all the rest of the district combined. It is the distributing point in this region. Fort Steele has a larger population than all other towns in the district combined. As a residential town it has more natural resources, is superior to any other point in the district, and is beautifully located ou the Kootenay river. Other towns may tell of what they will have in years to come, but the following list shows what Fort Steele, has at this time: HOTELS. Dalgardno. International. Oriental. Venosta. Ccour d'Aleno. The above facts show conclusively where the commercial center of the district is. Thore is no necessity of our saying iu 1891) wo will have this or tliat. We leave that part of the business to less favored towns. What we do claim is that Fort Steele has at this time more business houses within its borders, that it has double the number of residences, and has a larger population than all other portions of the district combined; that Fort Steele is the geographical centre, the commercial centre, and the centre of population of the district. Mining News. Reports from all over the Fort Steelo district tend to confirm the opinion so frequently expressed in The Prospector that tlie mineral resources of the district are enormous, Wo have an immense scope of couutry, with countless veins of gold, silver and copper, and limitless deposits of fluxing materials for smelting purposes. So general has become the interest in the Fort Steele district that a largo influx of capital may be expected hero this summer. Even tho most prudent and cautious of_experts are forced to tho conclusion that this district is destined to become one of the largest and most profitable fields of mining enterprises in tho world. Thore is no doubt that the district will be properly and honestly developed, and the near future will give adequate means of transportation. CUT IN TWO. Attention is directed to the advertisement ol the Vancouver World which appears in another column. That journal, owing to the tact that it now possesses the latest and most approved appliances for producing its several editions—daily and twice a week is- Bues—announces a reduction in its subscription terms, which practically amounts to a cut in two, on previous rates. The World being an up-to-dato newspaper is always enterprising and the step now taken cannot fail to make it an acceptable purveyor of news and welcome visitor to its numerous patrons. The typo from whicli it is printed is set by machinery—thene being four Linotype machines in operation in the composing room. The printing press is a Web one, turning out complete copies at the rate of ISO a minute or 11,000 copies per hour from stereotyped plates and oil a large roll of news print paper. This is the only newspaper printed outside of Toronto, in tho west, on a press of its construction and with such rapidity, lt is a sight well worth seeing, aud when in Vancouver make il your business to give The World office a call. AU will be welcome and the whole process will be fully explained. Read the advertisement. CHURCH NOTICES. ST, JOHN'S CHURCH. When the Herald gets older, it will view the fact of the people passing through that town in a more serious light. The Herald, however, has not sacrificed truth in presenting the proposition. Cranbrook is a splendid town — to pass through.—Wardner International. 1 Try-Again Mineral Claims. Try-Again mineral claim was located last year by W. J. Wat kins and A. Washington, March lil.—The naval appropriation bill, as reported to the house today, carried $35,688,058, an increase over last year of $8,704,482 and over tlie current estimates of $2,514,- 824. For increase of the navy tho bill allows to he constructed by contract three seagoing coast line battleships, designed to carry the heaviest guns, displacement 11,0(10 tons, with the highest: practicable speed for their class. with cost, exclusive of armament, not exceeding $8,000,000 each, one to be named the Maine: six torpedo boats and six torpedo boat destroyers to cost not exceeding $2,840,000, and one gunboat to take the place of the Michigan, lhe cosl, exclusive ol armament not over $260,000, to he built on the great, lakes. One of these seagoing battleships is to be built on the Pacific coast. Contracts for construction of all of these vessels are to be made within sixty days of the enactment of the hill. Mr line BOARD OF INaUIEY REPORT. Established That Explosion Came From tho Outside. The .summary of the report is as follows: When the Maino arrived at Havana she was conducted hy a regular government pilot to buoy No. t, to which she was moored in from live and one- half lo six fathoms, The state of discipline on board and the oondition of her magazines, boilers, coal blinkers, and storage compartments are passed in review, wilh the result that excellent order prevailed and no cause for internal explosion existed in any quarter, Al H o'clock on the evening of February Ifilli everything had been reporled secure and all was quiet, Al in miiiuics past 0 o'clock the vessel was suddenly destroyed. There were two distinct ex* been forced up, so as lo tie about four feet above the surface of lhe waler. therefore about 84 feet above where il would be had she sunk uninjured. The outside bottom plating is benl into a reversed "V" shape, the alter wing of which, about lu feet broad and '12 feat in length (from frame 17 to frame 25), is doubled back upon itself against u continuation of theilc same plating extending forward. ;P At frame 18 the vertical keel |; is brokeu into'and bent into a | j similar angle formed for outside1 plates. This break is about six feet above the surface of the water and about 80 feet above its normal position. In the opinion of the court this effect could have been produced only by the explosion of a mine situated under the bottom of the ship at about frame 18 and somewhat on the port side of the ship. The conclusions of the court ire; That the loss of the Maine was not in any respect due to any fault or negligence on the part of any officers or members of her crew. That the ship was destroyed by the explosion of a submarine mine, whicli caused the partial explosion of two or more of her forward magazines: and That no evidence is obtainable fixing the responsibility for tho destruction of the Maine upon any person or persons. I have directed that the findings of the court of inquiry and the views of the government thereon be communicated to tiie government, of Her Majesty the Queen, and I do not permit myself to doubt that the sense of justice of lhe Spanish nation will dictate a course of action suggested by the honor and friendly relations of the two governments. It is tho duty of the executive to advise congress of Ihe result and in Ihe meantime deliberate consideration is invoked. On ) reports person- his description lintod with the country would bo led to suppose that thero wero a dozen claims, most of whicli, presumably, wore located by a lunatic, judging by tlie bold statements therein set forth, and whicli, by tho way, constitute a very poor opinion of the rest of the country, if they nro tho most important. The true facts are that last year saw the opening up of ono of tho largest copper-gold regions that has ever boon discovered, and this wo say advisedly, as over 1,642 claims were located last year. From White Giouse mountain across the forks of the St. Mary's, adjacent and parallel to the mineral belts containing lho Nortli Star and Sullivan groups, trending northerly to Cherry, Skookum Chuck and Findlay creeks, is a mineral zone that will surprise any one who looks ovor the ground. Almost all the oros of copper occur here, as also loud sulphide, arsenopy- ito, mayuotite, pyrrliotite, graphite, <'lc. Tho ledges generally are wide, easily traceable, freo on the walls, apparently of great strength, and often iron capped, the country rock including mica and talc, slates and sliists, syenite, hornblond, orthoclase, gneiss, diorite, etc. The oftoner ono roads the report tho loss ono likes it. The total elimination of the northern part of tho district is, to say tlio least of it, insidious (it might even bo called criminal), aud although Southern East Kootonay is mentioned, it might just as well be left out, as nine-tenths of the facts are omitted, and in the oilier lentil a groat deal i.s left to tlie imagination. Tlio Innumerable gold-bearing ledges on Perry creek are passed ovor with a slight reference to an experimental mill, put up by an experimental man and run by an experimental amalgamator, To dismiss thus summarily and thereby condemning such a promising oamp is unwarrant able, and i.s exactly on a par with the assumption without enquiry that few discoveries wore made. Wild Horse creek, with its large and increasing bodies of high-grade grey coppor ores, is nol even mentioned; such groups as the Coronado, Colossal and Dodo bring presumably outcrops of imagination; while Tracy, Lewis, Sheep,' Wasa, Wolf, Six- Mile and Pour-Mile creeks discoveries are severely left alone. Why this should bo is not apparent, and we feel moro than dissatisfied whon wo remember the excitement caused by tho discoveries on Luke creek, St. Mary's prairie, Elk and Bull rivers, not taking into consideration the numerous discoveries and extensions in the vicinity of Moyie. It might possibly be that Col. Baker has loo much work- to do on account of the many positions lie holds, but it is no excuse, as, if he tiiids that ho cannot do justice to all, he is bound to resign that or those positions to which ho i.s least titled. As to this country the mining interests are of paramount importance, and we maintain that we have not received that attention to which we are entitled as his constituency, nor have wo been accorded tho slightest justice in this iniquitous report and we feel bound to put on record our deep dissatisfaction.
