Placer gold mining has held its own during tho past year. It i.s expected, from ihe extensive preparations made during ihe ,efirly season, thai the yield of of gold will 'bo considerable o larger than .that of L002. In the Ft,orf Steele Mi nine Division loss than 1,000 tons of lead ore were mined in 1003. as compared with '67.000 tons in 1000. ' Silver-lead ' mining in Southeast Kootenay has been at. si very low ebb "for .the past two years: in fact, most of the lead mines suspended operations, the owners claiming they could not . -bo'worked at a profit under the then existing circumstances. , The effect of the Domini on bounty on lead ore has stimulated development und equipmenl. The o St."Eugene is, once more ou i the shipping list, and has a force of MOO men employed. it is reported that, the.output of th'is mine will'be at least ."-.0,000 tons for the current year. . AMONO TrfE'l^A'CER, MINES. , [n the rich "mining region of the For;t' Steele raining division x- preparations"a;re'tfeing ' made to . carry on hydraulic mining on an extensive .scale. . '* ,, The Gold River Placer Mining Company have secured rich gravel deposits on Bull' river, and are now engaged in excavating . and preparing 'for the foundation of the big flume, which" will be LOxfi feet, and nearly two miles in length, and will furnish abundant water for mining and industrial purposes. Fifty men are now employed, and it is expected that next season the mine will be fully equipped*and in working order, one of the producing mines of the'district. , ' On'Wild Horse creek five companies are engaged m placer mining, one'lVuh'dred'meu. mostly Chinese, a reemployed. Pout- large ditches, carrying from 600 to 1500 inches of water are in constant, operation.' Twenty inch steel pipes convey waler to the giants. The gravel deposits cm this historic crock, have yielded large quantities of the yellow metal in the past, and continue to yield I'rom $20,000 to $1)0,000 every year. On Perry creek three companies are working, each on a different'principle.' a Near Old .Town the- Theis Company is sinking a new shaft to bedrock, work oh the old shaft having been profitable. The Perry 'Creek'Hydraulic Mining Co; is constructing a flume two miles in length and- will yfork bench diggings by hydraulic power, commencing near the falls; while the East Kootenay Placer Mining Co., further up the creek has taken in -a railway steam- shovel With which to raise the gravel from bedrock, and is now perfecting the machinery for handling the gravel ..between steam shovel and flume. QUARTZ MINING. Quartz mining is looking forward, and in the near future, has expectations of great success .Reports from the camps indicate art abundance of ore, rich in gold silver and lead. The Estella group, on Tracy creek, will probably, commence shipping during the_current year. There i.s no railway in this section, but the proposed Kootenay Centra I railway when completed, will furnish adequate means of transport at ion for ores mi nod in this portion of the district. J. do not know that it will continue at tlial. rate for a year, but if it did it -would make 30,000 tons of lead. This is caused largely by the heavy shipments of the St. Eugene mine, which is producing ITiOO tons of metallic lead per month. This output was never exceeded in this country but. once, and that -was in 1U0O, when the output was Ml,000 tons, the production that year having been stimulated by the extraordinary prices in London. The country is'in a bettor condition to take care of its lead than if has over been." In speaking of the amount earned by the load producers under the bounty act Mr. Buchanan said the claims by the end of June would aggregate*180,000 "Asked if-some claims were not held up which were sent in between .Inly and October last year Mr. Buchanan said 'Thcroare some such, but an amendment to move all doubt as to the date when the bounty payments were to begin, has passed the commons and the sena'.e. and F presume we will have ol'licial notice of it iu a few days."
