With the advent of spring there'has been an increase in the demand for lumber. Local lumber dealers report several large orders from Alberta. The Crow's Nest Pass Lumber Co., are, preparing to bringdown a drive of logs! from the St. Mary's river camps. Everything goes to show that the chances for Southeast. Kootc, nay lumber in the markets of the . Northwest should' beu except ion- ally good this year; '. Logging activity in thelvoote- "nay valley is now ended, a. conservative estimate places.the ci.it at about 55.000.000 feet of logs. Southeast Kootenay seems to have a particular attraction for lumbermen from all parts of Canada and the United States. Several representatives of-Eastern Canadian lumbering concerns are expected at Steele next month, w,ho are anxious to secure timber limits in the Kootenay valley. Proposed Railways THat Will Traverse THe District.-Ari Ideal Location For a Smelter. The accompanying sketch gives a fair idea of how Southeast Kootenay will look when those roads are completed: Both the Canadian Pacific and the Great Northern are operating in the .coal areas. These lines cross at Elko. Three surveys have been made for the Corbin road to Spokane. Of these Mr. Corbin says the one up the Yahk valley will be accepted. Thc.Yahk empties into the Kootenay at Libby, as shown on the map. Mr. Corban says the road will follow this stream from the International boundary. Just where it will connect with, the Crow's Nest, branch is not known. Surveys have been made from Elko and Wardner. The character of the country is most favorable for grades and railway construction. There isalso fino.timber and agricultural lauds. A charter will be applied for to build a road from Pilot Bay on Kootenay Lake to the head of the St. Mary's River to connect with the Kootenay Central at Port Steele: The timber and mining opportunities'are the attraction there. Large tracts of timber are being secured on the upper Kootenay and White river by a company who will put in a plant at Canal Plat, in anticipation of the construction of the Kootenay Central. , It will be soon with theso roads converging at a point on the Kootenay River the locality will have special advantages for a smelter. It will-be in the midst of coal, w'atorpowor and radiating lines of railroads botli_to the mines and the outside world. Mining Notes. Eugene stock during the weelc was quoted at 50 Tom Beavens was at Bull river Friday looking up stock. Mining is business not gamb ling. St. past cents.; , .To make -a , better, quality of coke and to greatly facilitate the process will be, had by, crush i n g I h e coal before fired. Silver is. going down, while zinc is going up. It is now more appropriatevfor the "smart set" to talk of their zincware, instead of silverware.. /flip Tracy, creek district is seamed with numerous large, well defined contact veins carrying high grade ore of copper and silver-lead. Prospecting by automobile is 11 io latest novel idea in mining. Two Colorado men 'left Denver for,a prospecting1 trip through Colorado. Arizona ;.; and , New Mibxicn. It now looks as though the Port Steele Mining Division will this year carry off the honors for silver-load production in this province. Here in the vicinity of Port 'Steele are many mines lying- dormant that have tine showings, awaiting transportation that can only be afforded by the construction - of : the Kootenay Central Railway. In a. short time the force of men employed :at the Trail'smelter, will probably be doubled. owing to the large amount of lead expected as soon as the St. Eugene mine is working to its capacity. i!, ' The Tiger-Pooruian group of mines,, situated on the divide between Wild Horse and Sheep creeks; and the Estella'in'me on Tracy creek, give pro.mi.se of becoming producing mines, on the completion of the Kootenay Central Railway. Wild Horse creek is the oldest mining- camp in the Kootenays. Famous as the producer, of $17.-1 000,000 in placer gold. 100 men find employment here, and the placers are worked steadily every day during the mining season. The St. Eugene mine at Moyie has commenced operations,, and bids fair to rival in production the balance of the silver-lead mines .of; the Kootenays. The concentrating- plant, is complete and'..funis' out high grade.concentrates. ,. . A number of petroleum springs are known to exist in Southeast Kootenay. One is on. Sage creek, another is on Oil.creek in the Flathead valley. There is reason to. believe that these do- posits are of great commercial value. There is plenty of arsenic in sonic of the Wild Horse creek ores, but no attention is paid to the fact that-there is a market in England for thousand of tons annually, and the price; ranges from 55 to' 890 per ton. At present it is 05 per ton. It might pay to exploit this branch Over' of mining. p The announcement that Chas. Sweeny is about to take the controlling interest in the Sullivan mine,' is not only the best thing that lias been said for the stockholders of the company, but the best thing that has been said for Southeast Kootenay. Mr. Sweeny is a miner. He is not only a iniiier: ho is a man of extraordinary force "of character and personality. His career has been tilled with more adventure than is usually put into the, heroes of romance.' , He began his mining career as i working 'miner on the Com- | stock'at Virginia City, Nevada, land rfrom that 'time until about (ifteen years ago he had a I wonderful and varied experience About ."fifteen years ago he undertook the development of some of the prospects of the Coeur d' Alone, Idaho. They were hard, uphill propositions, but difficulties were no,obstacles to Sweeny's ambition. With him the rabbit had to climb the free, no matter whether he had claws Buffalo Hump, and before he took out a'dollar he put $1,144,- 000-into the Big Buffalo. - -When something of the kind is done here there will be mines here. , Mr. Sweeny is president of the Federal Mining and Smelting Company which pays seven per cent per annum on n capitalization of $?10,000,000 which means about 200 per cent on the investment. If Mr. Sweeny takes hold of the Sullivan the shareholders may expect some mining and results. There were .'times when things did not go, but Sweeny did not stop, i At times he was reduced to very embarrassing circumstances. "Finally' things came his way and he was there to stop thorn, and today he cis at the head of a corporation that mines one-third of the lead of the Unitod'States. He ran the first long tunnel in the Coeur d'- Alone to proye the productiveness of the veins at depth. The funnel was 3,000 feet long. . ThereQwas no ore in the.vein where it was tapped. Austria, Sweden, Japan, and of the United States busy with mm-j-sister republics to the south. Hoisted high, are the colors of Turkey. Morrocco, Siara and Greece. The natives of all these countries, together with out- sisters aud brothers from across had to deal with labor unions, ! the Canadian border, will find a strike violences, martial law and! rendezvous on the exposition litigation. ' He surrounded himself with the best brains and genius in every department of his business, aud has won in nearlv every instance. His attorney while in his employ was elected to the United States senate! When Sweeny- found hm he was a prospector. Sweeny knew men as he did mi lies, and he took Mr. Hey burn out of the hills aiid put him in charge' of liis legal business. Much of his success may be attributed to his capacity to use, other people. The young man, W. Clayton Miller, who is general manager of his corporation, was "a boy just out of school when he came to Sweeny. Today he gets a salary of 810,000 a year for his services. He is Mr. Sweeny's confidential advisor, and Sweeny puts, up money on his recommendation. Mr. Miller examined the Sullivan a short time ago. Mr. Sweeny has never seen the Sullivan mine and probably never will. He w.ts the genius back of the County Court. Judge Forin held a sitting of the County Court at Fernie on Wednesday, and at Cranbrook on Thursday A Tri-Weekly Servioe.
