WITH THE POLITICIANS. -$r4,375,846 96 G. \V. Wooster, Treasurer. . . ; Auditor's Report. Grand Forks, B._., Aug. to, 1904. To the Directors and Shareholders of The Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting & Power Co'y: We beg to report the annual audit of the books of your company for year ending 30th June, 1904, and find them correct, the cash in hand, securities held and ledger balances agreeing with the financial statement. We have carefully examined the disbursements and find them properly authorized and vouched for. The books and general system and record of the financial transactions of your Company are systematically kept and reflect much credit upon your treasurer and his office staff. Respectfully submitted, Gardner Stevens, XV. A. Matley, Auditors. President Miner's Address. To the Stockholders of the Granby Consolidated, Mining, Smelting & Power Co., Ltd. Gentlemen:You will notice the Treasurer's Report gives us a profit of $283,000 for the year ending June 30th, 1904. I am somewhat disappointed with this result.as conditions seemed 'o indicate a much larger profit for the year when we last met in October, 1903. There have been several causes for this. In November there was an extra opening made in another part of the mines which caused considerable expense and considerable delay. This work was suspended. The result was that little or no money was made for about four months time. Otherwise a much better showing would have been in evidence today. , - 7 At the smelting plant two new furnaces with necessary machinery to operate them, and two locomotives with necessary slag cars have been added. The furnace building was enlarged to accommodate the same. Total operating costs have been reduced 44 cents per ton during the fiscal year. In June some changes were made in the staff. Mr. A. B. W. Hodges was appointed General Superintendent of both mines and smelter and now reports independently to the Board of Directors. We have every reason to expect good results the coming year; our costs are being reduced steadily, and with improvements now being completed expect them to be reduced much more. The mines and smelter are in better condition than at any time during the past year. The Company is practically free from debt, except for current monthly accounts, and has large assets. The Victoria, Vancouver & Eastern Ry. Coy. controlled by the Great Northern people is building into Phoenix and up to the Smelter from Grand Forks, which will.give us railway facilities with two great trans-continental systems, namely, the Canadian Pacific and the Great Northern. It is now seven years since I became identified with this property. These seven years have been years of very strenuous work and the progress which the company has made has been secured only by your management, with some exceptions, working together with mutual confidence and unity of purpose. I feel that this is as essential to the future welfare of the Company as it has been in the past.' This has led me to the decission, in retiring to-day with the rest of the Board, to ask that my name be not put up for re-nomination to the Directorate. I am, however, one of the very largest shareholders in the Company, notwithstanding all reports to the contrary. I have much faith in the property if well managed and shall always have a deep interest in, and best wishes for its success. Respectfully si itted, S. H. C. Miner, President, The local Conservatives expect to meet and reorganize next week. Duncan Ross, Liberal candidate in this constituency, is now campaigning up Kamloops way. He started at Salmon Arm last Monday. The Okanagan Herald, at Vernon, has been started by the Revelstoke Mail people, as a Liberal organ, since the election was definitely announced. Election day in Kootenay has been set for November 22, while nominations will be made on November 1. It is probable that Yale-Cariboo will have the same dates. Martin Burrell, Conservative candidate for Yale-Cariboo, started this week for a trip through the Similkameen. Both he and Mr. Ros will keep nearer home as the election day draws closer. MY FRIEND FROM INDIA'' "Within thirty days we shall be shipping 600 tons of ore per day from the Rawhide mine," said George H. Collins, superintendent of the Montreal and Boston Consolidated properties, yesterday. "We have an almost unlimited tonnage that we can get out and ship on the quarrying system, and we now have a force of men getting things ready for outputting ore. The C. P. R. spur to accommodate the Rawhide shipments, will be built at once, the contract having been signed, and ore bunkers for the Rawhide will also be erected without delay." R.A. Bainbridge, divisonal engineer of the C.P.R. at Nelson, and assistants, accompanied by W.P. Tierney, railway contractor, arrived here last night, for the purpose of laying out the Rawhide spur and constructing the same. ' It will be 1,600 feet in length, and will accommodate ten or fifteen ore cars when it is completed. Mr. Tierney expects to have his outfit reach here by next Sunday night, so as to commence work on Monday. He thinks he can get the work done in about a week. Mr. Coliins is also crowding, work on the Brooklyn, the new ore bunkers for that mine being now nearly completed. By next week he expects to be raising 300 tons daily from the mine itself, not including the ore that is on the dump. The shipments from this mine have been increased sorae- this week. About 70 men are employed at this mine alone. A larger skip will be installed at a later date, so that more ore can be hoisted in a given time. Now that the Brooklyn is steadily shipping, the next thing will be to get the Stemwinder in the same condition. The* hoist is now being set in place and it will not be long before that mine is sending ore down to the company's Boundary Falls smelter. The Famous Comedv to be Given Here by Walker's Comedians. So manny really ecellent theatrical attractions have been sent us by ; Mr. C. P. Walker, the western amusement director, that announcement of the coming of another will be received with pleasurable anticipation. The oaganization now announced is Walker's Comedians, the strongest comedy company ever sent into Western territory, and the play they are to give us is that wjrld famous laughing hit, "My Friend From India." Everybody has read of the phenomenal success of this irresistible comedy, which has packed the largest theatres in all the great cities. Up to this season the owners of the piece have refused to part with the Canadian right of production, but Mr. Walker has now purchased that right and the firs] opportunity to see it is offeted. Walker's Comedians are all players of reputation and a production complete in every respect is assured. There "is an evening of unrestrained merriment in store for our amusement seekers when "My Friend From India" is submitted to thein on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Miners' Union Hall. Hospital Ball Netted $200. The annual ball for the benefit of the Phoenix General HospitaJ, was given Thursday evening at Miners' Union hall, under the auspices of the Hospital Ladies' Aid. The ball room was crowded all the evening, and the music was excellent. There was a number of booths where refreshments of various kinds could be secured, a fortune teller with occult powers, and a cake rfflae. Mrs. Crawford won the latter with ticket No. 3. The net proceeds of the ball are estimated at about $200, and the ladies in charge wish to warmly thank the Miners' Union (or donating the use of the hall, as well as many other things. The ladies are to be congratulated on the successful outcome of the ball, and the generous patronage thereof illustrates what the people of Phoenix think of of one of our most deserving institutions. "My FUNNIEST OF COMEDIANS. Played by Friend From India" to be Walker's Comedians. "My Friend From India" is a comedy which has created more laughter than any of the funny farces of the last decade. Some, of the situations would bring a smile to the face of a graven image, and if laughter makes a man- grow fat, as the doctors declare, then there is bright prospects of an increase in the avoitdupois hereabouts, for the world famous comedy is to be played here on Wednesday, Oct. 19, by a capital organization known as Walker's Comedians, so called, from the fact that Mr. C. P, Walker, the western theatrical manager, is its director. There is something in a name, the immortal. Shakespeare to the contrary notwithstanding. Mr. Walker's name, for instance, as sponsor for a theatrical company, is a guarantee of real worth, for he has never failed in his promises. This time he promises the best comedy performance ever seen hre and a production which, if the experience of other communities counts for anything, will be the laughing hit of the season. Tlie murder occurred in Phoenix on the 12th of last August, Bell using a penknife for the purpose. He escaped, but in a few hours ran into the arms of Chief of Police Flood at Hartford Junction, and has since been in jail at Nelson, awaiting trial. It appears certain that he will be hanged, the execution probably to take place at Nelson. He will be defended by A. M. Whiteside of Greenwood, and several Phoenix men are on the jury. Hoisted Curfew By-Law. At Wednesday's meeting of the city council, Mayor Rumberger was present, as were also Aids. Marshall, Delahay, and Porter. Dir-ell once said of 81r William Harcourt In his affectedly cynical wfay: "He has the three essential qualifications of success tn politicsa, fine per- son, a loud voice, and no principles.". To this, when It was repeated to him, Harcourt rejoined: "Leaving out the first two qualification!, it might almost be applied to 'Dluy* himself.". Tradition ascribt* to the second Pitt the dying words: "O, my countryr-my country! How I leave my country!" What, in fact, Pitt said was: "I think I could eat one of Bellamy's pork-pies." Which he dldr-and straightway expired, to the Intense grief of the nation. This version Is attested by the head- waiter of "Bellamy's" (likewise deceased), who told It to Mr. Disraeli. Louis XIV. was told that Lord Stair was one of the best-bred men In Europe. "I shall soon put him to' the test," said the king: and asking Lord Stair to take an airing with htm, as soon as the door of the coach A was opened, he bade him pais and get in. The other bowed and obeyed. "English roast beef Is very delightful," was the reply. "Oh," said the Prince, "surely something else has Impressed you as well." "Ah, yes," returned Carlos; "at course, there Is English boiled beef, which is also delightful." ' ' A commercial traveler well, known In the cycle trade adds this to the collection of Jokes on newly msde hapPF fathers: The hero is the manufacturer of the wheel which the barrator' sells. Being compelled to go away on a business trip about1 the time an Interesting domestic evmit was expected, he left orders for the nii'me to wire'him results according to the following formula: If a boy, "Gentleman's safety arrived." U a girl, "Lady's safety arrived." The father's state of mind may be Imagined when, a few days later, he received a telegram containing the one 'word; "Tandem." . A certain Scotch caddie nameduMatfc- le Gorum was noted for his Invariable remark after a poor shot by the persoai he was serving: "It mlcht hae' been waur," which was meant to be consolatory and encouraging. His master, It clergyman, was wearied with this well- meaning flattery. Accordingly, to make sure that he would squash the remark for once, he told the caddie he had a terrible dream the night ' before. ,"Mathle, my mail, I dreamt that, I wag In the place where the wicked are punished. I saw the wretched ones tortured; they were swimming In a lake of boiling pitch, and could not get landed for red-hot pitchforks thrust la their faces by demons." He baited a minute, with his tongue in his'"[cheek, when, with perfect coolness, the caddie answered: "Aye, air,'that was a bad dream, jlst awfu'; but it mlcht bae been waur." "Waur, you foolT How could that ber' "It mlcht hae been true." It Is a current story In Tevtotdal* that In the house of an ancient family of distinction, much addicted to th* Presbyterian cause, a Bible was always put In the sleeping apartment of the guests, along with a bottle of strong ale. On some occasion there was a meeting of clergymen in the vicinity of the castle, all of whom were Invited to dinner by the worthy barohet, and abode all night. According to th* fashion of the times, seven of the reverend guests were allotted to one large barrack-room, which was used on Bucb occasions of extensive hospitality. The butler took care that the divines were presented each with a Bible and a bottle of ale. But, after a little consultation among themselves, they'are said to have recalled the domestic as he was leaving the apartment. "My friend," Bald one of the venerable guests, "you must know when'we meet together as brethren the youngOBt man reads, aloud a portion of-Scripture to the rest; ontit one Bible, therefore, Is necessary. Taks away the other six, and, in their place, bring six more bottles of ale." "To tha eye of vulvar Lojffc," said Ruskin "what Is man? An omnivorous bloed th*t wear* Breeohet." There has never been a Petticoat Bible, yet In the year 1560 an edition of the Scriptures was printed at Oerwva known as tha "Breeches WWe.'? -nbe name arose from an unusual renderlnar 'oflQenesia M. 7 Adam and Eve, Instead' of makln_ themselves aprons of figr-leaves, made ,.Uojnselve "breeches," There la no record of Eve wearing petticoats,,yet the flrt man is reported to have worn breeches. The ancients wore breeches dtviaed aklrts probablyon horse back only, raautrilng; their nowJnj dra- perles wheni they dismounted. Amonr Uie Roman*, trousers, which were oalled braccae, were worn only by the soldiers who" were exposed to cold northern climates. -Hfoey were homemade, to Judge from the pictures, and not In theleaat HtylWh. Among the Greeks such garments were oonflned to slaves, the swells reserving the chl- ton (for themselves. The first faint fore- t shadowing of trousers as we now sea them was In the time Of Richard I. of ISngUtnd. In Spain, as well as In the Low Countries, trunk hose, mercilessly sUsfbed, stuffed and decorated, were th* smart things among the elegants The story Is related of a luckiem courtier wOio, having seated himself on a chair upon which was a projecting nail, waa suddenly obliged to rise to pay his devoirs to his sovereign. ' Instantly several pecks of dry wheat dust gushed out of his "galloons," and the unhappy oourtler stood there diminished to a spindle and-cutting a very sorry figure. ' During the reign of Oharles I. of England,, when Vandyok's Influence was belnc f#U, breeches be-* came of urjiform width, open at the knee, where they were fringed or bordered with lace and fastened with ribbons. Trousers tomes from Old French: trusses, a kind of hose, from trousse, a truss. , Pantaloon* owe* Ks origin to St. Pantaleone, a patron saint of the Venetians. His name was commonly , received at baptism by tbe Venetians, and was by them transferred to this arment, whtch they very much affected. , The term "sansculotte" originated In Francs. It meant, properly speaking, a fellow without breeches, and was used as a term of derision by the arttfoeratlcal party for the popular party, at tit* beginning, of .thei Revolution, bint was later assumed by the pa- triots as a title of honor. Another term, on* which ha* offended our ears and our sensibilities. Is pants. But good old .OMrer Wendell Holmes disposes of It w*ch short shrift: "the, Ihlngt, named P*na word not made for gentlemen, but gents." The Mother Lode group of six claims, belonging to the B. C. Copper company of New York, is situated about three miles west of the town of Greenwood. The development work Quartz veins with values in gold or silver, oi both, are widely distributed in the district. They are known to occur along the hills on both sides of Boundary creek, around Long Lake, six to eight miles from Greenwood, on both sides ofthe North Fork of Kettle river, up the West Fork of Kettle river, and at Camp McKinney. Around Greenwood, which is on Boundary creek, they are now having close attention, and in several instances are returning profits to those operating them. In the early nineties a few score tons were packed over the mountains and hauled thence to the railway" at Marcus, Washington, at a cost of about,$30 per ton, and yet after paying high mining, freight and treatment costs, left a margin to the good for the enterprising pioneer lode miners of the Boundary. About the same time a small stamp-mill was put in at Boundary Falls, in an attempt to recover gold from near-by gold-quartz veins, but it was only an experimental plant. Of the high grade properties around Greenwood the Providence, Elkhorn and E. P. U. are the best developed, with a dozen others being actively and profitably operated. > y_Miiillil mm m sen m m My, Sfc-S/s THE PHOENIX PIONBBR Leading Hotel of Boundary's Leading Mining Camp.
