Happenings Around Elphie ----~-----~- |,y fok g0yes OIM| Marilyn Hopkins TUESDAY anorning, September 3rd, was the start of anotiier year at Elphie. Many now faces appeared; about 160 grade eights, new teachers, new students, and former teachers. We're really glad to welcome (back (Mr. Montgomery, Vice^principal who spent a year in the Interior, and Miss Lewis of tiie Home Economics Department. At our first assembly, held on Tuesday morning iMr. Potter welcomed back all the students after which the classes were sorted out. This year there seems to ibe the largest number of classes; with six grade eight and nine classes, five grade tens, four grade elevens, but only itwo grade twelves. Also this year, Elphie is running an eight day week, with forty periods. Tbis allows most of the seniors a study block, as they are required to carry at a minimum seven subjects in both grade eleven and twelve, and also allows them to possibly pick up extra course or ones they have to repeat. On the 14th of September, our 67/68 grade twelves are having their graduation ceremonies. They will start at 8.00 p.on. in Elphie's auditorium. Everyone is welcome to attend. On Friday, the present grade twelves held a meeting to elect a class president and secretary. John Barnes and Sandra Parsons 'have the honors. This week (the students will be busy planning .and making the stage decorations for our grads. Finally' after waiting so long, our Commercial and Electricity wings were completed. The Commercial wing is arranged -touch like that of an office. Elphinstone should be back to normal this week with the new timetable runniiig smoothly. The human element still has to be contended with arid despite the fact open garbage dumps have now been made available in the area there are those who still find it easier to dump elsewhere. Even worse, there arp those who actually take the trouble to drive along the road to the Sechelt dump yet phose/'tp unload their refuse along the wayside befpre everi waiting to reach the official dumping ground. To some extent poorly marked signs might well be blamed for while a sign points the way to the dump it fails to add distance. Consequence is that it only requires one irresponsible dumper to deposit refuse in the first convenient spot and in no time flat a new dump is born. Another sorry aspect is the type, or nature, of refuse and this it scenes includes not only household refuse anp useless aplianccs, car wrecks and unwanted building supplies, but dead animals. One resident en-routc to the dump recently stopped to remove a plastic covered object frpm the lane and bad the shock of dispovcring it to be a dead dog. This type of thing is a deplorable reflection upon our society and ccrfamly leaves n great deal to be desired. There is little doubt the Sunshine Coast is by far thc most desirable area in the province and faces 11 tremendous future providing thc sick practice of indiscriminate dumping can bc quashed. Right now wherever one drives off thc highway man-made unhealthy eyesres are in evidence.
