Th oft repeated i statement that mining is altogether neyv in Canada jinil that no Canadians have yet fathomed the mysteries of the craft of mine management is pretty -well exploded in the history of the Granby, as the. following from a coast paper will show. . When transportation reached the Boundary the work of making great mine out of the Ironsides and Knob Hill properties hail advanced but a feyv steps in comparison with what has already taken place tit Hedley in the Nickel Plate. If the Daly Reduction Company can accomplish so much here before transportation is secured, what may not be expected within tyvo or three years after the railways reach here ? The trains have noyv been running into the Boundary over six years. Who can picture what six years of transportation can do for a camp that has'Boundary ore'bodies, with thrice Boundary values ? Of the Granby the World says : "What British Columbians possess in the resources of their province is becoming daily more apparent to the least imaginative and the Granby Copper Mining & Smelting Company is a splendid proof that to those resources may justly be applied the worn phrase,, ".magnificent heritage." Returns for 1905 show that the Granby smelter is the second largest in the world, 'a fact that feyv are acquainted with. An enormous tonnage was treated in the smelter last year and at present 3,000 tons of ore are smelted per day. .The figures for the past year are the most impressive produced- in tlie history of Canadian copper mining On Tuesday of this week a telegram yvas received from Paisley, Out., telling of the death in that place on Mar. 11th of John Megraw, father of the editor of this paper, and of Miss Meg- rayv of the Gazette start". The deceased yvas born on Nov. 15, 1819 at Bally- gowan, near Belfast in County Doyvn, Ireland, and removed in 18 IS yvith his yvife and two children to Richmond Hill, York Co., Ontario, then generally known as Yonge St. In 1851 he preceded the general influx of settlement into the wilds of what was then knoyvn as the "Queen's bush," making his yvay with an Indian guide through the trackless woods from Owen Sound to Southampton, removing his faintly from Richmond Hill next year to the neyv settlement at Paisley, in the centre of Bruce. County. There he shared the hardships and vicissitudes of life in the new settlement, and provided for the wants of a large family. Deceased took an active, but unostentatious interest in public affairs, being all his life a supporter of the Liberal-Conservative cause. In religion he was of the Presbyterian faith, a trustee of St. Andrews (old church) Paisley until the union in 1874. The Granby company shipped to New York the enormous quantity of 24,000,000 lbs. of copper, 212,180 Uis. of silver and $42,884 yvorth of gold. These metals give a total value of six-million dollars. The weather this winter evidently laid itself out to play practical jokes on Mr. Waterman. They left here at the end of December after experiencing the severest weather that yve had. Jn California it rained on them most of the time, while the Similkameen was basking for months iu warmth and sunshine. Immediately on their return to B. C. the temperature took a drop and we are treated now to the coldest spell of the yvinter. HOT I L HEDLEY Almost A Fire. Tom vjorman who has spent the yvinter back in Ontario on his old stamping ground in Renfrew County, returned this yveek. He reports great excitement in the mining fields about Cobalt and good times in general in Ontario. The Hedley Chinks are fitting up and getting ready for the railway construction rush. A Chink storcis going up in the region south of Haynes. street, into yvhich a stock of Chink goods will be put. The Neyv Zealand hotel front has been improved by the addition of a new'platform the entire width-of the building and sloping doyvn to the level of bridge over the creek on Haynes St. This yvill take ayvay a great deal of the air of isolation given to the house from its immediate surroundings. A drop of 48 degrees in one day was tlie prank played by the yveather on Saturday last at Hedley, and on Monday morning the glass showed 6 above zero, yvhich was the coldest registered during the winter. At the mine also the severest cold, of the winter was experienced. On Sunday morning it yvas 7 below and on Monday morning, S beloyy. Messrs. .1. P. Gordon and G. Cunningham, of the Great Northern engineering staff, came up on Monday fyoni Keremeos to do a little revision work on the lines about Hedley. It is to be hoped that before, the month is out some direct evidence of Construction work in the shape of arrival of contractors' material at Hedley, yvill be. in evidence. Mrs. Dickinson, (nee Miss Loyvndes) held her post-uuptal reception on Friday afternoon last at her homo on . Daly Ave-, yvhen a great many ladies availed themselves of the pleasure of being present. The bride wore artaiu- ty waist of embroidered white silk, with black skirt, and was assisted by Mrs, Grier, yvho wore a pretty mauve and white waist and black skirt. The recent cold snap had the effect of tightening up the yvater a bit. and as a result some of the stamps in the Daly Reduction Oo's mill had to be hung up on each day since then. This time last year tho yvater famine yvas over, and the yvater in Tyvenl.y- iviile wsis gaining day by day, yvith the melting snows, yvhich shoyvs that this spring is later than that of hist year. The yveather took on a decided change at the end of last yveek. Up at tho Nickel Plate they had been having a couple of weeks of stiff yvinter weather yvhile Hedley yvas basking in spring sunshine, but the dip in the temperature which came along on the 10th yvas general, and on .Sunday and Monday mornings there wus a crisp- ness-in the atmosphere that indicated able-bodied March weather. Yesterday afternoon Hedley esunc near losing its big hostelry, the Hotel Similkameen. Owing to the cold snap a hot lire had been kept going all day in the fire-place in the rotunda, yvhich so heated the hearthstone as to set fire to the timbers underneath. The fire yvas discovered by Joe Mc.Derniott and Harry Waltni yvho connected up the local hose, tore up the platform outside and soon had the fire extinguished. Those local hose attachments, and the promptness yvith yvhich they were used, saved to Hedley a building that is the pride, of not only the Similkameen, but the whole district. at it I * t * * M M as B, V v Under New Management THE BEST I'HOVIDED IK KITCHEN AND UAK A N D K V K K Y CARE TAKEN FOR THE COMFORT OF V A T K O N S. The Mines Department, at Victoria, on complaint from some source or other, has raised objection to Mr. Miles practising assaying here in the assay office of the Daly Reduction Co., on the ground that, although a graduate of Yale, and an assuyer and chemist of experience at mines and smelters in the United States, he has not qualified under the "Bureau of Mines Act Amendment Act of British Columbia." In consequence of this the assay department of the Daly Reduction Co. has been closed for the present and Mr. Miles installed in the mill as cyanide chemist. As no charge yvas being made, for assays and no certificates given, it wtis believed by the Company that they yvere complying yvith the spirit of the Act, and it yvas a very great convenience to prospectors and the general public to have this yvork done here. In all probability Mr. Miles yvill go to Victoria in April to comply yvith the Act and. pay the necessary fee, but meamvhileit is hard on both the company and the public to be put to this inconvenience. . .
