A Successful Event
The Ladies of the Maccabees' Rally
Surpassed Expectations
Scores of People Were Unable to Gain Admittance to the
Crowded Hall—The Competitive Drill Was
Pretty and the Speeches Were Good. '
H. E. Small, the well known traveler from tin; coast, was doing business in fite city several days this
week.
A large and appreciative audience attended the rally given by the
Maccabees on Tuesday evening.
The meeting was presided over by
Mrs. J. C. McDonald, past lady com-
iiinndcr of Josephine hive.
The address of welcome was delivered by ex-Mayor Burrell, Mayor
llaminur not being nblc to attend.
Mr. Burrell spoke in bis usual happy
manner, ami extended a hearty greeting to all the visitors.
A violin solo was then most ix
quisitelv rendered by Miss manly,
with Miss Eyre as accompanist.
Mrs. Josephine Dcsilets then followed with the response to the address of welcome, anil expressed herself as being very proud of her nam ;-
snnie—Josephine hive. She spoke
very tonchingly of the late commander.'
Rev. Ferguson uf Republic next recited a poem entitled "The Creeds of
thc Bel's," which was heartily encored, and be responded with facial
represehtations'of a schoolboy making bis lirst speech, which were
very funny, the whole audience being convulsed with laughter.
Miss Effie Boss then sang, and responded i,o an encore. Miss Ross
bus a sweet, clenr voice, and is getting lo be quite a favorite with the
people of Grand Forks.
Then followed an address by Mrs.
Marion li. Baxter, of Seattle'deputy
supreme commander of the L. O. T.
M. lor British Coliimbiu nnd the
Northwest territories. Mrs. Baxter
spokcoftbegrowt.il and prosperity
of U.e order throughout the Dominion, and stated that the L. O. T. M.
is the largest fraternal organization
oi' women in the world, having an
indemnity fund of more than oni
million dollars. She spoke of tin
clevufing influences and the benefits
io be derived from tic order, and
closed with an appeal lo all 'present
to prepare for adversity in limes of
prosperity.
Mrs. Curphey, commander of the
Rossland hive, followed with a
paper telling of thc growth of tbeir
hive since its lirst organization.
It is now tho banner hive of the
province, with the largest membership in British Columbia, having
wrested lirst rank from Vancouver
last year, Mrs. Curphey, ou behalf
of the delegates, thanked the citizens
and the members of Josephine hive
for the very warm welcome they had
received and the manner in which
they had been entertained while
here,
A competitive drill wus given by
the Rossland guards, the guards
competing for the championship of
the tbis district. Mrs. Matthews of
Nelson, Mre. Cross of Rossland, and
Mrs. Spier of this city, were appointed judges. The Rossland guards,
sixteen in number, gave Ihe lirst
drill, and made a very striking appearance in their white costumes,
sashes and aprons. They executed
some very pretty figures, and received a very hearty applause from
the audience. The Grand Forks
guards, twelve in number, then
made tbeir lirst appearunoe before
the public, and also made an equally
striking showing in black costuniei,
niorlnr-board caps and the colors of
the order. They gave the Maccabee
drill and one or two extra figures,
and were certainly a credit to their
captain, After considerable discussion the judges decided in favor of
Rosslnnd.
The remainder ofthe evening was
tnken up with dancing, ice cream
and cake being served, thc company
dispersing at a late hour.

Now that the Grand Lodge of thc
Knights of Pythias meets here next
week, it behooves every citizen who
has the welfare of the city at heart
to assist in making the appearance
of the town as attractive as possible.
In this connection it may be remarked that there are a number of
front and back yards that need looking after and given a thorough cleaning. Some of them are very unsightly objects at present, and should
be attended to at once. There will be
from 100 to 200 visitors in tho city
as a result of the meeting of the
lodge, and there is nothing that
will give them a better impression of
our town than to make it attractive
and to entertain them well.

GOOD SERVICE is composed of two elements
—excellence of the work and promptness in
the execution. Bad work executed promptly is not good service—good work delivered behind
time is not good service; but the two combine to
make one of the most necessary, hut hardest to obtain and often most expensive, requirements of the
twentieth century business mail. That we have
learned the lesson in theory we have shown. Our
customers will testify that wc have also learned it
in practice.

GRANDFORKSSUN
.FOR ONLY..
$2.25 PER YEAR
A radical change from old methods and prices hns been made by
the Toronto Daily News. The eyes
of the newspvpcr world have
been upon Tbe News for the past few
months, during which time several
departures have been mnde which
have given that paper a widespread
reputation for enterprise and originality. This latest move is to place
The News at the price of $1.00 a
year by mail. Only a deep-founded
belief iii the future success of The
News could lend thc publishers to
make such a reduction in price.
But just as the dollar magazine lias
taken hold of the people, so, we venture to predict, The- News will secure a vast and cver-inerciising circulation, based not only on thepnp-
ular price al which it is sold, but
mainly upon the intrinsic merits of
he paper.
We have arrangements concluded
which enables us to club the Toronto
News with our own paper at $2.2.r) a
year in advance. Such a combination presents many unique features
—our semi-weekly giving you all
the lmine ami district news, and
the big 12-pngo daily keeping you in
touch with events all over the world.
Send us your subscription to Tho
News, or if you would like to see
the paper lirst, write us and wc will
