LegUlativeLibrwy Victoria i r*^ VI I ♦ Vol. n. Grand Forks, B. C, Tuesday, February 24, 1903; No. 33 A Six-Foot Sidewalk Will Be Built on Winnipeg Avenue and Donald Street. In the absence of Mayor Burrell, Aid. McCallum occupied the chair •at last night's meeting of the city council. All the aldermen were present with thc exception of Manly. A communication from Alex Miller in reference to surety bonds oil the city clerk was read and laid over until the mayor returns. A petition from the ratepayers in McCallums' addition, praying the council to provide a better water service, was read and considered. The petition, which was signed by every proyerty owner in the aforesaid locality, pointed out that when the present 1-inch pipe was laid only two householders were supplied with water. Now the number had increased to nine, arid the volume was totally inadequate for the needs of the residents. Mr. Hanington was present, and addressed the council in support of the petitioners. He thought a 4-inch main would be required, which could be laid on Cecil avenue from Winnipeg avenue. At present, he said, the residents had no fire protection except such as could be obtained from a garden hose, as it would be obviously useless to put in a fire hydrant and connect it with a 1-inch pipe. The council appeared to concede the justness of the petitioners' claims for an improved service, as all thc aldermen favored the work being carried out as outlined by Mr. Hanington. On motion of Aid. Trotter, seconded by Aid. Gaw, thc matter was referred to the committee on water -md light, with instructions to report at the next meeting. A communication was received from Father Broecker, asking thc city for the donation of four lots on which to build a Sisters' hospital, free to all creeds und nationalities. Aid. Trotter, in speaking in favor of the request being granted, took occasion to laud the charitable work of the Catholic church in this province, sayigthat it was most commendable and one of the grandest institutions of the church. He moved that a committe of two be appointed to confer with Father Broecker, which was carried. He named Aid. McCallum aud Cusson as such committee. On the sug gestion of Aid. Cusson, Mr. Trotter's name was added to the committee. The communication from A. C. Sutton, asking the city to indemnify J. G. Hayward for loss of time and medical expenses incurred by reason of injuries sustained from a fall on a slippery sidewalk, was referred to the city solicitor. Mr. Downie, district superintendent of the C. P. R., in a communi- jjfttion in renlyto the resolutions of tne council passed at the last meeting, stated that he would give Grand Forks' claims for shop improvements his most favorable attention if the necessity for such improvements should arise, A communication from B. Wood- head, soliciting eity employment in brder to work out his taxes, was laid on the table. The contract with the Granby Mining, Smelting & Power company in regard tofnrnishingtheeily witt/electric power was read. As the contract does not expire until until Sept. 1st, action was deferred. Applications for the position of poundkeeper were received from E. P. McCallum and B. Woodhead. The chairman thought it would be wise to postpone making the appointment until the pound bylaw had been passed, and the best location for the pound had been decided upon. The matter was consequently laid over. -K Aid. McLellan said that since thc three-plank sidewalk resolution had been passed he had learned that such a walk would, in all probability, warp, and that the cily would have to keep a man walking over it all the time to keep it in its proper shape. Ho therefore advocated a four-foot walk in lieu of three-plank one authorized last week. Aid. Gaw favored the change, and thought it would be a good idea if the clerk would call for tenders for all the lumber needed (luring the year,,'By doing so, he snid, a lower rate could be obtained. The chairman pointed out that the difference in the cost of a four- and six-foot walk was only thc additional cost of the lumber in thc latter case. Aid. Cusson favored thc 4-foot walk as a matter economy. Aid. Trotter said that the walk, being on one of the main thoroughfares of the city and leading to thc public school building, was one that would benefit every ratepayer in the city. Aid. Gaw took the same view, and believed in putting down a walk that would not have to be replaced by a better one in a few months. He said this was probably the only walk the city would be called upon to build during the year, and he favored putting down a good one. On motion of Aid. McLellan, seconded, by Aid. Trotter, it was decided that rfie city construct a 6-foot walk, . with 4x6 stringers, on thc streets as marked out for the three- plank walk at the l0*5»»0(*(J0H0fi0(10HOROf 308JOflOf Mf WJOH008 $ REV. IRL R. HICKS' 1903 ALMANAC To say that this splendid work of science and art is liner and better than ever, is stating it mildly. The demand for it is far beyond all previous years. Prof. Hicks, through his great Almanac, and hia famous family and scientific journal, Word and Works, is doing a work for thc whole people not approached by any other man or publication. A fair test will prove this to any reasonable person. Added to the most luminous course in astronomy for 1903, forecasts of storms" and weather are given as never gbefore, for every day in the year, all charmingly illustrated with nearly two hundred engravings. Thc compressor will be driven by electricity in two parts, with two motors, each of 700 horsepower capacity. In the upper end of the glory hole at the Knob Hill mine two drills are being temporarily run by steam. The car of ore shipped from the Lancashire Fraction, which is being worked under lease and bond by B. N. Faulkner, Shorey Heyden, T. Stewart and D. He was work ing on the night shift, and about 1 o'clock in the was about to shift a car near the new ore crusher at the Knob Hill mine, when warned by a working partner, Dunlap, not, to do so. He persisted, however, and fell in between the cars and thc wheels crushed out his life. He was an American, about 25 years of age, and had worked at the Granby mines for about a month only, although he had been employed previously at the Mother Lode mine and in other parts of British Columbia. Coroner Foster investigated the case and decided under the circumstances an inquest was not necessary. J. H. HODSON'S, COLUMBIA, B. C. CHEMICAL HALL FOR...
