Revolution&rv Proposals. /f must have .t..i.k many of the admirers of the melodramatlo stage that the various outrafM to which the hero la subjected luring the course nf the four acta, when he Is "up against It" good and hard, are as like each other as a row i>t Japanese dolls. The locomotive, tht flre-ieel. the buzs-naw, the mine explosion, and the shipwreck, have been worked over and over again. What we need Is novelty. And If I might make a suggestion, some new and starUIng climaxes could be worked up from Che modest Incidents of our dally life. For there are climaxes In the domestic circle Just aa distressing as any depicted on the atage. Even when the canvas buzz-saw Is advancing on him with all the energy a perspiring atage carpenter can Impart to It, the hero does not suffer the agony of apprehension that convulses the soul of tht average man wtipn he arrives home at three o'olock In the morning and hears the contemptuous sniff which apprises him that the wife of his bosom Is awaiting him at the top of the stairs. Nor does tht heroine, when starving to death In tht latest black cashmere "Dally Hint from Paris," evince more trepidation than does the average matron, when the leader In her particular brand of "sas- «lety" drops In and finds her In a cot. ton wrapper with her stort tteth In a tumbler of water and her magnificent chevtlure lying on top of the bureau, Tnere are calamities just aa soul-har- rowing In the domestic circle as In the drama. The trouble Is that the play- wrlgihts have never tnken hold of them In the true spirit of discovery. We will take as an example one heroic Incident that lately happened In this city when a prominent citizen Induced a small girl to save her life by jumping from the wlndowslll of a burning house on to the tails of his ulster, which she accomplished without even breaking hla flask. We can easily picture to ourselves how this could be worked up for the stage. The Angel cheelld Is backed up on the wlndowslll will a pound of red Are burning on a tin shovel behind her. The hero comes tearing on from the side scenes. He sees her, and clasps his hand to his forehead. (Heroes always do that. It Is a kind of a send- off.) He seizes a handful of clustering locks from his wig and tosses tt Into the air. It comes down "Tails!" The cheelld must be saved. With a wild wrench he whips off his liver-pad and holds It outstretched In his strong arms. The cheelld jumps and re-bounds from It like a half a brick from a book- agent'a cheek. Once more she springs; and again he Is foiled. With a cry of anguish he hurls the liver-pad at thc sneering villain and catches her on his breath. And aa she Is towered In safety to tha ground we see the uuivcrlng MORTGAGE SALE -OF- CENTRAL RESIDENCE PROPERTY. 11N l»l Mi AM) HY VIRTUK OK THK POWI-RB (I < f^nl' •■,,..'Hint-ill.i tu.t eertnln Ne-in- tered Uortgagei- which will tie produced ai time of ■ttle, there will he -itlcr-ii for mi i<* by Public Auction by Peter T. And that is the way In which Inanimate objects are neglected. We have dogs, jeese, chickens and poultry In melodrama. But that It* all. I was once acquainted with a gentleman who played a cake of Ice tn the river Hcene In "Uncle Tom's Cabin." And the barrel in "Panjandrum" was a most lovable personage ofT the stage. Many friends of mine have also formed part of the "hoarse gathering murmur" which always arises In the wings when the hero la getting fnto ft remark bly tight place. But these were not strictly Inanimate objects. They drew salaries, and wore red 'neckties on Sundays. What we need Is a further extension of the drama from the farmyard to the grocery counter, and the hardware store. And we shall get It. We shall yet see ft drama tn which the leading comedy part Is played by a tin of canned salmon and the heroine Is saved from the villain's clutches by a barrel of patent glue. And why should wa not? There are many comedians now on the stage who would compare unfavorably from an intellectual standpoint with a tin of canned salmon. And there are heroes beside whose personal charms a barrel of glue would shine fti a paragon of pulchritude. A tin of canned salmon would.prove far more useful to the heroine When she Is lost on the sandy desert, or afloat on the lonely raft In mid-ocean, than a comic Irishman with a Coney Tslnnd brogue. If she did not care to tackle It herself she could feed It to the villain and tie him up In ao many knots that It would take a traction engine to straighten htm out. And the dramatic possibilities of a barrel of glue are simply Illimitable. She could use It for sticking to everything from thc angel cheelld to, the papers proving her to be rightful heiress to the old baronial home. When the villain sprang upon her, hissing out "At last I have you In my pow- er-r-rl" she could paste him to tht -xttchen stove and go out for a walk. How would the band of Moorish brigands look If she stuck them all to tht adjacent rocks by the slack of their loose trousers, while the manly hero went through their pockets? A dab of glue on her wlndowslll when the murderer was creeping, knife In hand, Into her lonely bed-chamber, would compel him to stay there all night or com* plete his crime In a costume which the management would not stand for even for a moment. And then how useful It would be to help her to adhere to her salary. It la true that they might hava to soak the hero In hott water to get him away from her. But'then he often richly deserves to be soaked. In every other Instance the faithful glue pot could give cards nnd epides and little casino to the most use ul comedian who ever trailed the villain to hie lair. These are only two nf thc Instance! In which the use of inanimate object* In the cast would Increase the novelty of the drama. But thplr number could be Indefinitely Incrensed. We have long had the wooded ttor. Why should wt stick at the im-nlmate tragedian? Herein we have n bright Idea for tht budding playwrights who have dramatized every book that has a circulation of over ten copies, until the principal /Blue we place on the dictionary Is th fact that even the most ambitious of them have never used It as tht basis of a romnntlc play. And wt chnrge nothing for this hint tn dramatists. It la an absolutely free graft.— Montreal "Sunday Sun." The Paris police have prepared a pic* ture-book tor the lilt ol travelers who lose things whioh, because of unfamil- iarity with tho language, they cannot describe, It contain* representations of all kinds of articles, from keys to purses, and the enquirer, after mi-Hintr valuables, has only to turn the leaves and point at the picture that moat rc-ienihle-t his property. But the ay»tcm has its limitations. Unfortunately it cannot picture a temper, which is the article now most frequently lost by visitors to a foreign city who do not know the language of tht country. In Prlnoe Edward Island there la a striking example of that longevity which is characteristic of so many parts of Canada. The eyes of the newspvper world have been upon The News for the past few months, during which time several departures havo, been made which have given that paper a widespread reputation for enterprise nnd originality. This latest move is to place The News at the price of 11.00 a year by mail Only a deep-founded belief in the future success of The News could lead the publishers to make such a reduction in price. But just as the dollar magazine hns taken holdof the people, so,.we venture to predict, The News will secure a vast and ever-increasing circulation, based not only on the popular price at which it is sold, but mainly upon the intrinsic merits of ho paper. We have arrangements concluded which enables us to club the Toronto News with our own paper at 12.25 a year in advance. Such a combination presents many unique features —our semi-weekly giving you all the . home anil district news, and the big 12-page daily keeping you in touch with events all over the world. Hill, the railway president, began his connection with the transportation business through steamboat- ing, but he soon deserted it for sail- reading, says the Saturday Evening Post. The road which he has since made so widely known was at that time considered the slowest in the country. Mr. Hill listened good na- turedly to the fun that was naturally poked at his road and worked the harder to improve it. Meeting Mr. Hill one day on the street in St. Paul, "Diamond Joe" Reynolds, of upper river steamboat fame, said: "Jim, I'll match one of my steamboats against one of your trains in a fair race for $500 a side." "Well, I don't know,'" hesitated Mr. Hill; "some of your boats are pretty fast." "Come, I'll race you up stream," urged Keynolds- "Oh, thunder!" returned Mr. Hill in a disgusted tone; "if you're going to stick to the river then you might as well drop the notion of a race. I thought you meant you'd bring your boat out on the prairie alongside the track and give me some show.'' THE UNION MEAT CO. Is Here to Stay Head Office at : GliEENWOOIl, B. C.
