NOT BUYING SlrUPS.
St.- Petersburg, Dec. 9.—Tlie Associated Press is olbeially authorized
to make thc following statement:
".Tho ..reports spread abroad that
Russia has purchased either Chilian
of Argentine warships are untrue.
Efforts were made to secure them for
the purpose of reinforcing Vice Admiral Rojestvensky's stfiiadron before it sailed, but there were '" so
many dillieulties in the way that the
project VYasal_ta.ndon.ed. Their pffv-
oliftso now, oven if it were possible,
would be unavailable, as Rojestvensky will have arrived in the Far
East liefore they could be manned
and lilted out. After the war these
ships, will be out of date. Having
failed ourselves, wc are equally confident that the ships will not fall
into tlic hands of the Japanese.''
The Associated Press is also authorized to state tbat even if every
ship of the Port Arthur squadron is
destroyed it will have no effect upon
Rojestvensky's plans, which never
contemplated assistance from the
Port Arthur* squadron. The reports
of the x sinking of a number of the
Russian ships causes a feeling of extreme sadness iu high circles. It
seems incredible that when it be-
Bayait, armoured cruiser, took fire
at 11.lit), and is still ablate, and at
'1.15 p.m., the Amur, transport.was
hit fourteen times'and sunk. Muny

its being able to reinforce the Russian second Pacific squadron, the
Japanese have accomplished the main
object ofilesperate assaults against
the fortress which, tlieybavc been

There is now a strong^ probability
tli^t, while continuing the siege, they
will avoid losses of the magnitude

SCIENTIFIC WAR.
Thc gun practice which the Japanese are having at the Russian warships in Port Arthur harbor will
furnish a great ileal ol valuable information as to the effect of modern
high power ordnance on warships ot
Ihe present day. Their experiment
is a v_._r n\s\\y one lor Russia, but
it is unique, as there n__ not lieen
anything like it hitherto. Practically the Japanese are mailing targets
of really fine battleships and cruisers and noting the effects as accurately as possifle from a distance.
When they take Port Arthur they
will lie enabled by examining the
wrecks to form new ideas on the
-onstFubljron of wkrsliips and t'he
chance? they have against heavy
guns. Similar experiments on a
very small scale have been made
by France, and also by Great Britain, the old Bellcisle hiring useh by
the last named as a tii-gCt tor thc 'tcsH
The Bellcisle as a warship, was really obsolete, but she was strengthened in parts and the effects of projectiles and various explosives used
against her were closely observed.
She was sunk at least once by a
perfect shower of shells and then
hauled closer in shore, floated and
examined. But the present experiment under real war conditions is
in a class by itself.

EATING.
As Christinas is approaching and
the small |#iy is already beginning! to
sharpen up an appetite lor plum
pudding ami turkey—although perhaps the desirable bird may be
somewhat scarce this year if the reports of a turkey famine in the East
he true—a little homily along scientific lines on the danger of overeating naturally occurs to one. \| th,
outset, however, as a ray ol hope we
may state on thc authority of the
British Medical Journal that while
It is generally believed lhat the ordinary individual cats more than is
necessary, it has by no means proved
that the majority ol mankind eats to
excess. Consequently, when Johnny
about two weeks hence, has stuffed
himself full at the Christmas table,
his mamma, so long as her son is an
average boy, may conclude Irom
scientific deduction that as the average Individual does not over indulge
in catiilg, Johnny is only temporarily
embarrassed. Some little time ago,
a scientist named Chittenden experimented with various classes of people, including students, professors
and a sii.lid of soldiers, extending his
observations over a period of several
months. He came to the conclusion
that half of what the ordinary man
eats, is enough to keep one healthy
and in good condition; but thc Medical Journal, for once takos the
side ol humanity and seems to regard this statement with suspicion,
Jt says, what to eat and what to
drinl: will always be decided with
national custom and individual preference, so tar as the public is concerned; but '.'both may lie influenced
in the right direction by the guidance of skilled medical opinion." So
it may be seen from all this that
medical men and scientists arc not
at one in their views and wc confess that alter reading the articles
in question , we knew no more than
before and that no doubt will also
apply to yon gentle reader when
you have perused the present article.
AN OUTCAST ;K1NG.

There Is no truth, however, in the
story published at Berlin to the effect that the regicides were about to
receive decorations from tho Czar.
The latter is far from feeling well
disposed to King Peter, in spite ol
the. latter's kinsnianship to the house
of Romanoff and to his professions of
ardent devotion to Russia. For not
only did Nicholas refuse to send any
grand duke—not epen Grand Duke Peter of Russia, the brother-in-law ol
King Peter—to attend the latter's
coronation, but when the Servian
king asked permission the other day
to visit St. Pltcrsburg before the
end of the year, in order to express
gratitude tor the "constant protect
tion of Servian interests by Rus-
ria," the Czar curtly replied that he
could not possibly, under thc present
circumstances, receive the king, and
that moreover, "the road Irom Bel-
garde to St. Petersburg led through
Vienna."
This was equivalent to telling thc
King that the gates ot the court ol
St. Petersburg would remain closed
to him as long as he was unable to
secure the good will ol Emperor
Francis Joseph, who, however, is
never likely to forgive or forget the
crime which paved the way lor Peter to the throne ot Servia.

A REMARKABLE! nULL.
C. Broadwood, rancher at Five
Mile Point was' in the city yesterday, says the Nelson Daily News ol
Sunday, and told a remarkable story
ol the endurance' ot an animal under very trying circumstances. One"
of Mr. Broadwood'is neighbors is the
owner ot a very valuable three year
old bull. The bull always returned
in the evening alter grazing on the
hills' in the day time. One night
early in November the bull did not
appear at night and diligent search
then and during the next day failed
to discover him. The/owner assumed
that it had been taken lor a deer by
some amateur, huntsman, and gave up
the search. *)   ;
Three weeks and one day—2_days in
all—later he found the bull in a
clump ol bushes albut 150 yards from)
the house, with one horn pinned under a (alien tree, its head twisted to
one side, its leet in the air, unable
to move in any direction, as it lay
in the angle formed by the elope ol
the hill and the log. It was living,
but wasted almost to skin and bone.
The owner and Mr. Broadwwod first
fed the animal as It lay, with milk
and whiskey. As safon as possible-
they cut the log and gently released
the bull. Belore trying to relieve the
animal a pint of rum was administered. Then a sled, was procured and
the invalid was conveyed to its stall,
where it is now slowly but steadily
recovering.

B. C TREE SEEDS.
A Vancouver nurseryman has just
received an order from one of his
European correspondents for over a
thousand dollars worth of native tree
seeds, if he can secure theni. He
also has enquiries Irom Germany,
Russia and England lor these seeds
for nursery planting. The seed re-
id.ired is "Thuya Gigantea," or the
native Giant Cedar, and "Pseudot-
spga liouglasii," or Douglas iir.
Moth oi these varieties ol trees grow
wild here and aic I.,'ing cut down
both hy the lniiili.i'iiitin ami by the
rancher, who is clearing land. The
seed. cones, which are now ripe and
full of seed, are allowed to go lo
waste. These could easily be gathered and spread out 011 a light floor
or canvass,sheet, or even newspaper,
in a, dry' .00111 and iu a lew days
the cones will open and the seed will
drop out by stirring them over occasionally. This ought to mean easy
money for rmy person engaged' in
clearing land or living in the vicinl.
ty ol a lumber camp. The demand
will rapldl) increase 1 as it'becomes
ljettor known that British Columbia
is about the only country where any
Umber of theso varieties is lelt.
