Tillage keeps the soil in good, loose conditu.ii ' and increases its water-holding capacity, r Frequent shallow cultivations keep the top two or three inches of soil loosened, maintaining a dust mulch which acts like a blanket ln preventing evaporation of the soil moisture. The plant foods are made available by cultivation and manure gives better results when used on tilled land. Young orchards as well as old need cultivation. In a young orchard crops, - such as currants, gooseberries, etc. may bu grown between the rows, but never closer to the tree than five feet. The cultivation of the crops will generally be sufficient for the trees.
