Lyme is the name of a disease first recognized in that village as an infection previously unknown to medicine in North America until the late 70's. Now it has been noted in many states of the US with a few cases reported in Canada. One resident of the Sunshine Coast is just now recovering from this illness acquired through a tick bite while he worked in the Kootenays. Medical research since 1975 has established that the spirochete, a genus of bacteria, which causes Lyme disease or Lyme borreliosis, is carried to humans by a deer tick, a tick much smaller than the wood tick. This tick is suspected of spreading about the continent by means of migrating birds. The tremendous increase, reported in the US, of the number of white-tailed deer, one of the tick's hosts, is thought to be another factor in the spread of this disease. Although the symptoms vary greatly, we are told by health experts, the illness generally divides into three stages; that is to say, of course, if early diagnosis and treatment are not undertaken. r In the first stage flu-like symptoms like severe headaches and fever, often marked in two- thirds of the cases by an expanding rash centred on the site of the tick bite. These signs appear after _the second or third day after the tick bite and continue until the 30th day. Weeks, perhaps months, after the tick bite has introduced the spirochete into the Mood stream, there may appear pains in the body joints, even a brief memory loss, and facial paralysis. In the third stage, generally within two years, come the signs of arthritis that can last for months and leave recurring joint problems in more than half the victims of the disease. If diagnosed in time the disease can be successfully treated with antibiotics - a reassuring thought. A great deal of information has appeared in the popular press, a good deal of it gleaned from medical journals. Oregon, we find, is a region of high incidence of the disease, Washington much less, so far, and BC with relatively few cases diagnosed, although a deer tick is indigenous here. Enough concern has been shown by sufferers of this disease in BC to see the organizing of support groups to collect data for the public, for government agencies, and for doctors. A support group in West Vancouver founded by Diane Kin- dree, herself a victim from a tick bite in her garden, has among these objectives just listed the added one of pressing senior governments to begin studies of deer ticks in BC. It is pointed out in articles on Lyme borreliosis that ticks can be found in cities on pets as well as in tall grass and trees in wilderness and parks. In Lyme news, West Vancouver support groups newsletter, some precautions to avoid tick bites are laid out in detail. When anywhere outdoors in areas likely to harbour ticks, clothing closed at ankles, wrists and neck is one safeguard; insect repellent is another; a check for ticks on the skin especially at the neck hairline is certainly- called for; and the use of - disinfectant following the careful removal of the whole: tick with tweezers. Instruction is given, too, in" Lyme news in steps to be taken, in sending live ticks found on the body to your doctor who in turn can send them to the BC Centre for Disease Control. One of the many nice things about leaving the 'big smoke' was that I no longer had to drive like a tnaniac to get where I'm going. ['Moving to the Sunshine $ast with my very versatile lit- frfour sixed V6 Capri, with its lack and pinion steering for pose light corners of the Coast Highway, made it difficult for ^ie to settle down from that Inaniac driving you literally have to do in Vancouver. I actually got away with no speeding tickets, no accidents of any kind, lt amazes me now to think of my luck. But that was 13 years ago and traffic was much lighter here then. Now I drive slowly, but not too slowly. I'm in no hurry. What for? When cars rage past me in a big panic to get to the next car in front of me to ride their bumper, I just laugh. When 1 drive the old pickup truck with the mega bumper thai slicks out a good foot from the tailgate, I really laugh. One of those new cars with its rubber bumpers and thin melal front ends is going to crumple like a child's accordian if the driver decides to tailgate much closer and I have to stand on the brakes. It hasn't happened yet, bul with the heavily increasing How of traffic on this coasl and the rush that people seem to be in to get nowhere, it's going lo happen soon. The festival begins August 9 and runs through to the 12th. Anyone with bed and breakfast places available is asked to phone the festival office at 885-9631 and leave your name. I have been carefully studying the marvellous brochure the festival put out. What a program! Poets, novelists, historians, gardeners, science fiction writers and my special favourites - crime writers. The mind boggles when I try to imagine the intricate organization that must go into putting on such an event. I helped out, in a small way, with the first couple of festivals, so 1 have a tiny inkling of the work and dedication involved. The clincher is that you can take in all these events, or very nearly all - the food is of course extra - for only $50 or $5 for each event, students $3.50. A bargain, 1 would say. They want to lhank all who con tributed to the success of the luncheon by baking, donating goods and money, working on crafts and working at the hall. WRITERS' FORGE The Suncoast Writejrs' Forge will be holding one more meeting before the summer break. Actually, it's not a meeting meeting, it's a summer potluck picnic meeting. It starts at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, June 13 at Rockwood Centre. "But the regional district is paying the extra ferry fare for Ihe bigger truck," said Morris. "That's a help." People from all over the Coast, even Powell River, are bringing their recyclables to Shop Easy. "But still, there's only about five per cent of the whole population that is recycling," said Clayton. "That's a bit disappointing." When asked by the Coasl News what they see as possible solutions Morris said, "We could just say it's getting to be too much and simply stop doing it. But we don't want to do that. It means too much to us personally. "We could rebuild the recycling operation in another area. We have a site for it. But it would be pretty expensive because it would have to conform to rigid specifications. We would have to have financial support for that. If it helps one person - it is wise. Elder Abuse is difficult to identify as it has not been as well documented as olher forms of family violence such as child abuse or spousal assault. Evidence of this problem was brought to ihe BC Task Force on Issues of Concern to Seniors by concerned friends, relatives and professionals who recounted stories of physical violence, financial greed and emotional entrapment. Elder Abuse is present in small and large communities, in families of various ethnic backgrounds and in private homes as well as in care facilities. There are no shelters for seniors of the sort that exist for abused women and children. Physicians arc not required to report their suspicions of abuse as they must for battered children. The Task Force has, Sechelt's good folk The Sechelt and District Chamber of Commerce is once again seeking nominations for a Good Citizen of the Year for 1990/91. The Chamber asks the public's help in finding him or her. The successful candidate must live within Sechelt Munic- pal District boundaries. The Good Citizen will be honoured in October with a banquet and dance and will be presented with a beautiful illuminated scroll. The person or persons nominated will be considered by an independent panel of judges. Individuals should be nominated in a letter using not more than 100 words for each person. The successful candidate will be a person who has served their community faithfully without remuneration. Deadline for nominations is Friday, September 7, 1990. Send names to: Good Citizen, Sechelt and District Chamber of Commerce, Box 360, .Sechl BC, VON 3A0. therefore, identified the need for a greater awareness of the overall problem of abuse, regardless of age or gender. The recently established British Columbia Institute on Family Violence, a non-profit society, will be developing a coordinated approach to the prevention, investigation, assessment and treatment of family violence. In addition, public education on issues of family violence, with attention to the problems faced by the elderly, will be undertaken by the Institute. This is what you can do if you suspect an elder is being abused. Phone the local detachment of the RCMP and they will treat this issue as they would an assault case. There will be more written on this issue as soon as more data comes my way. IkiflZZfl MORE THAN CLOTHING (jrand \Jpeninq Sal., June 16 al 10:30 1057 JRebeAi Creel /? He is charged wilh operating a loudspeaker 'in such a manner as unduly to disturb the comfort and convenience of ihe public' al Wilson's Arcade of Mysteries, 985 Granville. Police Constable Fred Mercer testified lhat a masked man sat in the window of Wilson's Arcade inviting people to 'come and see Canada's mastermind of crime and olher displays. He said il was similar lo the type of invitation heard al a circus sideshow, Mrs. A.G. Clark, proprietor of a women's apparel store adjoining Wilson's Arcade, said lhal ihe 'lei-luring type' of speech over the loudspeaker had a detracting effect on her business. Mrs. Clark admitted thai she didn't like Wilson's Arcade next to her store and would like lo see him move. The trial will continue before Magistrate Harold Harklev, January 6. Vancouver Sun, Dec. 17, 1959. The whole matter is duly resolved about a month later. Noise Law Charge Silenced by Court. Herbert Emerson Wilson won an acquittal on a noise violation charge evolving from a loudspeaker al his Arcade of Mysteries. The charge laid by Mrs. A.G. Clark, proprietress of a women's apparel store was thrown oul by Magistrate Harold Hurkley. Vancouver Sun, Jan. 14, I960. It is one of the few times in Herb Wilson's long and curious career lhal he will come oul on the winning side in a court case. The disgruntled Mrs. Clark is reduced to pounding futilely on the communal wall with her broomstick again. Flushed with victory, Wilson simply ignores her. Aboul a week after his successful day in court, Wilson decidevto augment his raihetiif skimpy collection of exhibits wilh the addition of two authentic Egyptian mummies. (Exactly what connection Ihe ancient cadavers are supposed to have wilh crime is unclear.) Typically, Wilson claims lo have brought Ihe mummies from Egypl himself. As Jack Bird recalls, this assertion like mosl of the others, is well shy of the truth. "He got those mummies because I told him where he could gel ihem. They used to be owned by Woodwards department store. Don't ask me why ihey had them but they did. Used to keep Ihem in Iheir warehouse. Herb bought them anyhow and set them up in the Arcade. One of them had several teeth fallen out in Ihe lower jaw. I stuck my hand in- Winners Congratulations to Katherine Warn, Clint Davy and Jeffrey Birkin, award winners at the eighth annual Images and Objects exhibition. This exhibition, organized by the Assembly of BC Arts Council, and held in conjunction with the government sponsored BC Festival of Arts, showed a total of 226 works of art chosen by jury from every region of BC. It is an indication of the quality of work being done on the Sunshine Coast lhat Warn and Davy both received Awards of Excellence, of which only five were given, and Birkin received one of the 10 honourable mentions. For Dad! CHOCOLATE NOVELTIES MUGO* BRITTLE (Homemade Peanut Brittle in Coffee Mug) - at Etna's. Bon Born Cowrie St, Sechell 885-2687 side his mouth and replaced them. One of the mummies was called Ptolemy, a tall fellow. The olher, Antioch, was short. Antioch had apparently tried to rob a temple and been caught. Someone had thrown a spear at him and there was indeed a wound, right beside his nose. I ihink Herb paid $150 apiece for those mummies. They pulled the people in for awhile." But despite the mummies, the days of Herb Wilson's Arcade of Mysteries are numbered. The reasons are not financial. They involve a gradual succumbing to various pressures. Chief among ihese is the continuing harrass- menl of Mrs. Gark. Since losing her case, she has become more ill-tempered than ever. Her assaults on the wall grow louder and more frequent. Often Ihey interrupt Wilson's monologues, much to his displeasure. In addition, the police now begin to harrass the Arcade, following rumours thai it has begun lo attract a criminal element. There is some truth to this. Ex-cons and known rounders do occasionally drop by to trade a few words with ihe old master thief. Herb Wilson, over the long years, has developed an understandable aversion to law officers of any stripe. Sometimes he forgets lo lie properly respectful. "1 have a toilet out here in the back. Would you like to stick your nose in thai loo?" he inquires of one notably-persistent beat constable. (Whether or nol the officer takes him up on the suggestion is not recorded.) But Ihe writing is definitely on thai broomstick denied wall. One day a fed up Herb Wilson simply decides lo capitulate. He and Jack Bird dismantle the Arcade, load the contents into a moving van and disappear, lock, stock and mummies, into the suburbs. Yet another money-making scheme has come to nothing. ...to be continued Open Howe 577 Pratt Road, 1 to 4 pm Sunday. Just stop grabbing at the steering wheel and trying to stomp on the brake. by Rose Nicholson The message about the rape of the environment is being heard from all over these days, but seldom more forcefully than the recent production put on for local schools by the Green Thumb Players of Vancouver. The story, set some time late in the next century, after the 'green' world has disappeared, is of two young adults who are running from the corrupt 'system'. They live their haunted lives in a grey wasteland of rotten garbage and piles of contaminated waste. In their flight Ihey encounter a diseased old man, a lone remnant of the past civilization. They are afraid of his speech, for he speaks 'the old language...and language has power...and dangerous memories'. The old man has a secret source of a most precious commodity - clean water, and with it he has built a small greenhouse where he nurtures a few tiny struggling plants. The three join forces and though they don't exactly live happily ever after, they resolve lo build a better world. Remembering to have passed Lord Jim's on the way up the Coast, just north of Sechelt, we decided to give them a call for their hours and whether or not they could accommodate children. Everything worked out to suit our schedule and we soon arrived at Lord Jim's Resort, tucked away in Ole's Cove. The restaurant, complemented this view with a spacious dining room and a wall of windows to let the ambiance of this setting in. The service kept pace with a courteous and patient waiter and superb food. To start the evening my companion and 1 ordered a Caesar salad which would have had Caesar himself asking for more as it tasted so good. For the main course, the two kids split an order of linguini. My companion had the broiled salmon and I thought I would try the roast duck in burgundy sauce. All of us tried a little of everyone else's and agreed that everyone's dish was just as tempting and cooked to perfection as the others. To drink I had a domestic beer, while my companion had tomato juice and the kids were treated to Shirley Temples, a combination of 7-Up, orange juice and grenadine. We all had such a good meal that when it came to desert there was no room. Our compliments to those at Lord Jim's for a delicious and pleasant dinner, a place worth coming back to. Alderman Reynolds states his case Editor: It is my hope by way of this letter to you and the public the facts to date and my intentions for "Gospel Rock". Firstly, I am pleased that you called me on Friday. Although we ended the conversation by agrtxing to disagree, we at least had the same information to base our opinions on. As you are aware, there is a line well above Gospel Rock representing the crest of the "cliff documented by a local BC Land Surveyor. Due to the irrevocable letters the Town has on record including a signed covenant, all of the land below this line including the "Rock" and the eagle nest will be dedicated to the Town at the time of subdivision. Obviously, this dedication can not be registered before subdivision because there is no separate piece of land to dedicate. The land above this line is now legally zoned as Rl. The developer will not be permitted to subdivide this land until his plans for subdivision conform with the Rl zoning, his written voluntary restriction on lot sizing and other matters as determined by the Subdivision Approving Officer and the Town's by-laws. unahlrt* Coaat PEST CONTROL LTD Getawa Ra. PweeW Hanxui. BC V0N2HO LOCALLY OCE RATED GOVERNMENT LICENSED UNMARKED VEHICLES The Town has been servejd by a petition with the intention of quashing the by-law that zones the land above the line as Rl. Although it has not been determined if the Town is at fault in any way regarding the handling of this issue, we have been advised by our solicitors that the petitioners may have a case on some procedural points prior to the adoption of this zoning bylaw. Rather than defend the Town's position and incur the attendant costs, I agree with the solicitor's recommendation that Council pass a zoning by-law identical to the previous one, without any possibility that it could be challenged on technicalities. Members of Council have insisted that all those on staff and elected ensure the rules in the Municipal Act are followed, without exception. You stated that we (Council) seem to be in unreasonable haste to zone this land. I strongly disagree. Is il right lhat the victim should be forced to pay for the sin of the rapist? By denying her the right to put her life back into as much order as is possible and by forcing her lo bear and give birth to an unwanted and perhaps loathed child, those who favour no choice of abortion actually perpetuate Ihe rapist's destruction of the innocent. Further, it constitutes subjugation of women. We've seen much 'star wars' activity including one adull knocking a juvenile out of the perch tree at 'Dixons' and again a mid-air juvenile dive al an adult on the nest. The white-heads use the nest tree daily and at least one sleeps there often. It is likely that this new pair of young eagles are aggressively trying to establish their own territory here. This time some members of council seek to waive the public hearings, totally excluding the public from the new rezoning process. The public strongly objected lo the development proposal at the last set of public hearings. Opponents find these latest actions scandalous. This newest attempt to repeal and replace the contested Gospel Rock by-law failed at Tuesday's regular council meeling. Over the mayor's protests, Aldermen Kunstler and Dixon refused to rubber stamp the new by-law, as they were unwilling to make a snap deci sion about the town's most controversial rezoning proposal. Gaps in the rezoning process continue, as certain extremely important documentation has been available to neither public nor all members of council. Throughout, the community has, on numerous occasions, requested council and senior staff lo review and correct their questionable process. Instead, Gibsons criticized their citizenry and minimized the community's concerns. On four separate occasions council was advised of the irregularities in ihe proces and asked lo respond appropriately. Opponents hold the errors in the process include: conflict of interest, incomplete minutes of public hearings, improper notifications, and incompatibility of the proposed zoning with the Official Community Plan's environmental concerns for Gospel Rock. Everyone was overjoyed at the news, but when the dust settled we realized that actually our work was really only starting. That work being the raising of funds to allow the researchers to look towards finding a control. At least, for Cystic Fibrosis. Already there is a test for siblings. At the moment it is cost-prohibitive to test the public at large, however if there is CF in your family you can arrange to be tested prior to becoming pregnant, in case you are a carrier. New medications are always being researched and, although not the answer to control, it does buy more time for some. There are more scientists committed to research and everyone seems more hopeful now that the CF gene has been isolated. After all, apart from cancer, CF is the No. 1 killer of children in Canada. So why, you might ask, has it taken long to bring this to the attention of the public. There is no answer to that question, but wc are trying to make people aware. Our new Sunshine Coast Chapter got its charter on April 22. lllana Holloway and I went to the convention 10 days later and gave our commitment to all the other chapters that we would make "The Journey Home" (as this era in CF history is being called) a little shorter. Cystic Fibrosis was dubbed 'the forgotten disease', but that is changing rapidly. The education here on the Sunshine Coast was started last year by the Kinsmen and our Chapter has now picked up the ball and we are running with it. This is the greatest little community in Canada. Help us give the children with CF a future. A little, a lot, it all adds up and we are making a difference. The children and their parents cannot do it alone. They desperately need our help. Can we count on your support during this time when a control could be so near? You helped isolate the gene, come with us on our Journey Home. THE BREAK THROUGH A significant breakthrough in CF research occurred last summer when a team of Canadian and American scientists isolated the gene which is responsible for the transmission and development of cystic fibrosis. This milestone in research has wide- ranging implications for current and future CF victims, and has inspired the future Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to call this stage of the battle against CF, "The Journey Home". Dr. George Davidson, Director of the British Columbia Children's Hospital cystic fibrosis program has acknowledged that the discovery of the gene, though an important step, is only a first step towards a cure for the disease. "The next stage is to find out what that gene controls, which may give us the answer to why the cells don't work. "If we know that, correction or replacement of the defective gene becomes a possibility." The short term benefits of the discovery are much closer to being realized. "We should soon be able to use knowledge abeiut the CF gene to develop simple screening tests for all newborns. The tests would also enable anyone to find out if he or she is a carrier," Davidson says. With one in four Canadians carrying the gene, this screening process could save thousands of couples the agony of discovering that their beautiful baby has CF. The isolation of the CF gene will also enable scientists who are working on a cure or control for the disease to focus their research more specifically and avoid many unproductive avenues of exploration. While the breakthrough may not appear to have much immediate effect on those who arc currently living with CF, it offers something precious to victims and their lined ones - hope. This is the first convention for the recently chartered Sunshine Coast chapter. "We're proud to he your 54th chapter" Dinn told the almost 200 delegates. "We're 54 linear miles of coastline with 19,000 people." A total of almost $9 million was raised last year across Canada, of which almost $1.5 million was raised by local chapters. Only 8.5 per cent was spent on administration, a limit that is built into the foundation's by-laws. The rest went to research and treatment. In a report on the convention Elva wrote, "We were touched by the ages of most delegates. Young people, nearly all with CF children at home, father, mother, and in some instances both telling of their efforts to raise funds for research. "We could not help but wonder how they found time and energy to do this when they have so much to contend with at home. "They couldn't tell you, they just do it. They have no choice." Elva was asked to share with the other delegates the fundraising campaign that was launched last month. Sunshine Coast artist Li: Mitten-Ryan has donated a painting, 'Toward the Promise' to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. It will be unveiled at a special ceremony on the Sunshine ('oast on June 16; At that time the limited edition prints will be made available for purchase to local residents before being offered as a fundraiser for CF chapters all over Canada. All money raised bv the sale of the 500 prints will go directly to the CF Foundation. Further, Canadian Art Prints, who publish Mitten-Ryan's work, have offered a percentage from every sale of every one of her prints to the foundation, and her art cards will be available to all CF chapters as fundraisers. The announcement was a real shot in the arm for the delegates. The generation of a possible $100,000 in money for research means a lot to the foundation. "We live in the greatest little community in Canada," Elva proudly told the audience. The convention, the delegates and the momen- tou- breakthrough in CF research made last year Mill, the'iMilntion of the causal gene inspired the two Ineal delegates to come home fi|U of determination. "Now we need money," says lllana Holloway. "Money is what's going to find a cure. And I think that what we do in this small community is just going to ricochet all across the country. "Those people need to feel that they're not fighting alone, that somebody else is pitching in. And then it will just snowball." This stage of Cystic Fibrosis history has been called "The Journey Home" and Elva Dinn told the convention, "Maybe this will bring us just a little bit nearer." On a Wednesday in 1985, when my granddaughter, Laura, was diagnosed, I finally came to grips with the problem and decided I had to make a difference. I did what I could with my husband's and friends' support. Then in 1989, the Gibsons and District Kinsmen Club launched a massive campaign for Cystic Fibrosis. It was so educational that many, many people were touched by the suffering of CF children. When the Sunshine Coast Chapter was formed, Liz Mitten-Ryan wanted to be involved and what could she do best? Paint. What better scene could depict the hope of CF children than the blue heron, poised with wings spread, ready to soar up the beautiful Sechelt inlet. This chapter of CF history is referred to as "The Journey Home", the involvement and dedication of Liz Mitten-Ryan and "Towards the Promise" will make the distance a little shorter. I guess you could say it will help to fulfill a grandmother's dream of a control for Cystic Fibrosis.
