Tenders will be received up to noon of Wednesday, November- 10, by Mr. Desrochers at Ottawa. . Plana and specifications for the - From among a considerable number of tenders submitted to the Dominion, department of public works on the construction of a new wharf at Hollyburn, West Vancouver, that of Mr. William Greenlees, 407 Cordova street, west, has been accepted by the. Dominion cabinet and sanctioned by an order-in-counciL The successful bid for the erection of the new pier-is ?6,60O. Confirmation of the passage of the order-in-council accepting the tender and awarding the contract has been deceived by. both Mr.. Greenlees' and. ■Mr. S. J. Crowe, M.P. for Burrard. The new wharf is to be erected, a short distance west of the present ferry landing wharf, and is to be quite strongly constructed owing to the strong tidal currents and considerable sea which prevails there at times. It will ^ be a great convenience to the growing population of West Vancouver, as owing to the fact that the ferry wharf was municipally owned and had to be kept clear for the ferries, there was no wharf available for the landing of cargoes which required some time to unload. It will be especially convenient in getting in fuel supplies, which heretofore were quite costly owing to the long haul by way of North Vancouver. Contractor Greenlees is to start work on the wharf at once and hopes to have it finished in a month or six weeks if favorable weather prevails. ■ TO PROBE PRICE FIXING BY U. S. MANUFACTURERS OF BUILDING MATERIALS WASHINGTON, D. C—Attorney- General Palmer has ordered an investigation of charges that a price- fixing combination exists among building material manufacturers. This was learned when Representative Isaac Siegel, of New York, who advocated such an investigation, made public a telegram trom the attorney- general. Mr. Siegel was asked to place any information that he had regarding the matter before Francis G. .Caffey, United States District Attorney, "who has been instructed "to consider whether the facts tend to show a violation of the Federal laws." Their warehouses, stables, garages, and even small dwelling houses are made out of clinkers. The clinkers are crushed, mixed with sand, lime and cement, and moulded into blocks. The blocks are turned out in various sizes and.have an advantage over bricks-in that they cost less and, facilitate quick construction. The builder can cover, them with plaster on the interior of the structure or with stucco on the exterior. i Captain Fader's plans had come out beyond expectation, the face of the mountain for over 100 feet longtitud- inally and 30 or more in wid'/h with a horizontal depth of _ over 30 feet ville street frontage will be done had «>ean. loosened, in fact broken up away with and the space absorbed into a much larger rotunda to obviate much of the congestion which now exists when ocean liners or large excursion trains arrive. Another thing that makes the clinker block possible in the Brest district is the fact that the coal produced there carried a large percentage of shale, despite the most careful sorting. , Building biocks made from .clinkers, moreover, are not an economy .expedient. They came into use in Brest because the humidity of the climate makes an ordinary brick wall drip moisture, and tliese clinker blocks withstand the humidity much better than almost any other material.
