WHILE It is possible to 'consider, the modern home as a box or a collection, of 'boxes, in which human beings] mo,w. *helr bodies and their various' activities during- certain' -'parts/WtheT" day -and iiight. »From a still more material point of viewit may be considered .-as a combination of- floors, -walls and Toof designed to shut out the-.-weather; or-as a more or less scientific structure of certain materials, assem- -Wed in. such fashion as to. defeat the force of'gravity. To many., people. '• .house1 is simply a place in which to sleep' and eat one or more ' meals aaHy; -while to others it is a device Sot making money by ^way .of returns i-Sn -rentals. * 5 If -a house be no more.than one or. all of these things to a man. he is to "be pitied. For he has missed many of the purest joys of life. For the. real Thouse is not its floors and walls'and ■-Tooli^ its doors, windows and chim- aeys; its* stone and brick and plaster and wood*; its plan- and its decoration. The real house is something of "which -fltese are but the outward and visible dress, the appearance and incidentals. 'The real house is the invisible soul, if ve may call it so," contained' in the material shell of its visible form. Like jhU immaterial verities underlying material things, it may take on a protean 'Variety- of' aspects. It may'be a shrine, a temple, a castle, a bond, a -present dream in absence. Tt may be en exclusive abode- shutting out the external world and all"'disturbing and 'confusing things; or again, it jnay be "widely, inclusive, holdipg. out as it "were, hospitable arms to, gather into its embrace its many children, to welcome all tlie adepts of its special effec- tions and, possessors- of the password of its particular friendship. A small house of*charm is an object lesson to all who pass by. And the Tjrity of it that so little attention is being paid by leading architects and designers to the .small, dosy home. "Doubtless the average small house of today is/,a* much better house than that of forty or. even twenty years ago. It is better planned, better built, more convenient and livable; and even commercial syndicates have begun to cater to an improved taste in ionses. Cut there is yet great work to "be done in this field and bur architects are the ones.who must do this v work—a work of both creation and education. . The problem of the small house is well worth the architect's while. It 'even deserves a large measure of self- sacrifice on his part. To a busy archi- -tect with many large commissions on hand the small house makes little appeal. Some offices even refuse to touch it. This would almost seem as great a mistake as if a great doctor should refuse' to- see a poor patient. For after all, there are a thousand small, houses built for every large' one," and the beauty and'charm of the country at large depend far; more on the character- of- tne small; houses, tjian. of the large ones! The- cheapest house may, after all, be a\true work of art^ the product of an architect's- unselfish land, consecrated, talent-, full- of. the. 'charm*of-simplicity, fitness, harmony' -and sincerity, a dwelling'place worthy: of; beautifqi'liyes. and_ high and home-: ly virtues. * ' *' " ► fourteen feet wide which even since :the paving was first laid' during the .war, was Heft uncompleted in the centra section of this famous motor highway extending from the city boundary to that of Burnaby." The strip- in question was planked over but the planking has of late become so worn' that its splinters and protruding spikes were the ruination of m§py a. set of auto tires besides the inspiration- of hosts of hectic remarks from motorists. ■» The contract involves an outlay of iapproxiniately $50,000 and the Cotton Company * wjill- commence assembling plant and material* today for the carrying out of the work.
