"Reconstruction" is1 the magic word all across the contin-' ent as well as it is in devastated! Europe. But in the meantime, one; notable and pleasing feature of busi-j ness conditions is that there has been- no slump in any particular trade orj I industry—outside that of making muni-J I lions which was naturally expected to' slump ' when hostilities ceased. One ! surprising feature has been the steadiness of the Lumber market. It was the lone industry which was expected to j slump with the advent of peace—es- < pocially after the government announced its spruce policy. So far, however, the slump has failed to materialize. In fact eastern orders now indicate that1 the close of the war is to be followed by a great building revival all over the country. .Many building projects con-; templated and some that were under' way were held up by government or-i riers and these are now to go ahead, i The building boom will likely find its, greates impetus on the Pacific coast.; I CUAMMIU.B, AMQI.MB, PX__T_5B, TITOS, C03.V.CHS COMPXiETK-VT EQTTTPFED FAB-UCATX-TO- SHOP* CANADIAN NORTHWEST STEEL COT, Ltd. ralrmont 2396 »ad 2397 Vancouver, M. On the worthy principle that "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure," the city council in • 1916 created a City Fire Commission— a special body possessing no execu- vived by tlie mayor and council which takes oflice in January. Now, more than ever, amid the changes of the reconstruction period and readjustment that will follow the advent of peace will there be the need for just such a body of experts to draft and submit to the city council measures designed for fire prevention even above fire protection.
