Allen OPENING AUG., 16 TH CANADAS FINEST AND MOST MODERN PHOTOPLAY THEATRE The last link m the famous Chain of 58 Allen Theatres extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific. PLAYHOUSE well worthy of the title of "Palace •■ .of Amusement" threw wido lis ■ doors to the amusement loving public of Vancouver on Monday and a really notable addition to an already imposing chain of Canadian theatres was formally opened by Mayor Gale with all the eclat that uuch palatial premises merited. The new Alien Theatre at the corner of Georgia and Seymour streets in heralded as the finest motion picture theatre in the west as well as the city's largest playhouse in point of seating capacity. ..-,-.- lt ,1s indeed fitting that Vancouver, admittedly "ihvpaest show city in the whole western^'*half' of the continent," ih experienced^theatrical men are fond of quoting it,-whoufdr henceforth be in a position ' to' po"*nt with pride to the finest "motion picture playhouse in Canada. This new temple of the silent art. forming the latest^' biggest and best of a chain of 5S splendidly fitted, equipped and furnished theatres owned by the Allen Brothers of Toronto, who are operating theatres in twenty-one Canadian cities, represents an expenditure in this city of over. $400,000 before the first ticket was sold on Monday. It has been customary to speak of now theatres as "representing the last word" tn playhouse construction. Fully complying with and even exceeding in many respects the Btringent building regulations which cover theatre construction in this city, tho new Allen playhouse represents the last articulate syllable of the final -word In all that goes to combine up-to-the-minute construction, safety, convenience and comfort in connection with this increasingly popular form of amusement. If there is anything more "up to date or acutely metropolitan in .the way; of theatre construction and equipment, Canada has not got it yet—but will have its etjual soon for six'or more virtual duplicates of this new theatre are now under construction In various Canadian cities Cor the same owners and" management. Designed by Mr. C. H. Crane, the eminent' therure expert of Windsor, Ont., who] has been retained, .by the Allen Brothers to design,- all their recently planned new theatres, the building exterior is as plea-sing to the eye, architecturally, as the interior la sumptuous and restful. Vancouver screen fans can still remember the decided thrill which went through the community when the first announcement was made that the' Allen interests had purchased the old .Waverley hotel corner and intended to demolish that venerable structure and erect upon the site a theatre, that would set a new standard for a picture playhouse throughout ail of this broad Dominion. Those promises, roseate though they may have seemed at the time, have been fully lived up to. And what is more, the new theatre has been erected without any of those vexatious delays so frequent in large building projects, and the whole construction carried out in a manner that reflects the greatest credit on Mr. Alexander McDonald, the general contractor, and the various subcontractors and skilled tradesmen whose combined skill .was needed to* produce this handsome thesplan temple. >• CLAYBURN FACING BRICK Supplied By Evans, Coleman & Evans, Ltd. AGENTS The construction throughout_ia of reinforced concrete, steel, brick and tile, with art stone trimmings manufactured by the Dawson Art Stone works—a combination of fireproof materials tha,t may be said to be as enduring as the everlasting hills. Outside of the massive steel frame which includes some of the largest and heaviest fabricated girders that have been put into any building in the city," all of which are covered with an ample thickness of concrete, ■ the exterior is finished with Clayburn face brick, supplied by Evans, Coleman & Evans. A considerable quantity of common - brick was also used for interior partitions, and supplied by the Gabri- o!a Shale Products Company,* through Messrs. Champion & White. That would make a sufficiently substantial and impervious building to suit most building! experts. But not so with Allen Eros., or their enterprising and conscientious general contractor. Mr. McDonald. The whole exterior of the building has been waterproofed and made absolute!}- impervious against all atmospheric action by* a carefully applied coating of the. B. C. Impermealite Company's product. In a damp climate such as this, such care in the initial stage of a building's life will, according to eminent building experts, result in keeping its fresh appearance almost indefinitely. Even the roof—the weak point in the construction of many theatres from a fire resisting standpoint—is constructed of - concrete slab, which in turn is covered with Barrett specification roofing felt, installed by Messrs.
