Avery, Brown, Bell, Conn, Groffman, Lumsden. Murdock, Marlow, Rose, Willarson and Wright. After routine communications were read from the Canadian Crocker-Wheeler Co., manufacturers and electrical engineers of Montreal, stating that they note the board is contemplating the establishment of a general hospital and asking ■that they be favored with an order for apparatus required. Referred to the Hospital Committee. From L. W. Shatford, M.P P., re night watchman stating that the matter would be laid before the Attorney-General. From Martin Burrell, M. P., Ottawa, re petition fo postoffice building, customs officer, etc., for Princeton, stating that he would gladly present to the minister the petition and press the claims in person, also point out the important position occupied by Princeton. He said it was an excellent thing to have these matters brought to the Government's attention as soon as possible. A vote of thanks was ordered to be conveyed to Mr. Burrell. From L- W. Shatford, asking that his name be added to the hospital subscription list with $25 contribution. Also stating that he would write the Provincial Secretary re plans for hospital build ing. From Hon. E Dewdney, Victoria, stating that he had made an appeal to the Dominion government through the Hon. Mr. Pugsley, Minister of Public Works, the Hon. Mr. Templeman, and the Hon. Mr. Bostock asking them to give favorable consideration to the petition for a public building at Princeton. He further said : 'I trust we will succeed in getting what is really a necessity now that the town is developing rapid'y.' A vote of thanks was extended to the Hon. gentleman for his helpful and enconrag- ing message. F. E. Groffman was elected a member of the Executive Committee. Hugh Cowan was elected a member of the Board. Messrs. L. A. Manly- and P. Swanson occupied seats in the visitor's row and addressed the Board, Mr. Manly pointing out the great usefulness of boards of trade and the good they may accomplish in building up a town. His remarks contained many usefui pointers, for which he was thanked by the President. Mn Swanson was pleased to be present and note the effective work of the Board. He will, in all likelihood become an active member. The question of a daily stage or auto car to connect Otter Valley, Nicola district, including Merritt, with Princeton was debated. No action. The following motion was introduced ;ind unanimously eudorsed: That this Board would greatlj appreciate the action of the Great Northern Railway Co. in continuing to retain the town of Princeton as their headquarters and distributing point of construction of their line east of the Coquihalla ; also respectfully asking President Hill to early designate the town of Princeton as a divisional aud jjnctional point. Board adjourned. MONEY MAKES ROADS Liberal Appropriations are made for New and Repairing Old Roads. Inter-Provincial Trunk Road will be Built in Year or Two—Member Makes Good. BIG COAL LAND DEAL. Andrew Laidlaw, a Spokane mining man, has recently put through a deal in which 17,500 acres of coal lands in the. Jasper Park forest reserve, Yellowhead | Pass, on the line of the Grand Trunk Pacific railroad, has been acquired and will be operated by the Jasper Park Col lieries Co., Limited. Five strong seams of bituminous coal outcrop on the property. The enterprize is capitalized at $2.500,000. Mr. Laidlaw is expected to shortly become interested in coal property near Princeton. Manly is engaged to teach in public school, beginning as soon as she arrives, which is expected any day, from Halifax, N.S. She holds a first class~certi6cats_and is a music teacher, r^ The large appropriations made by the government at the recent sitting of the local legislature for public works is now available for actual service in the construction of roads, bridges, &c. Hon. Mr. Taylor, Minister of Public Works, besides spending $40,000 on improved road making machinery will engage men qualified in the art of road making, so that any construction or improvements will be of a permanent character. The inter-provincial trunk road program will have the snug sum of $50,-000 to spend in beginning this great road across the province to Alberta.*" The Colonist says regarding it: ' Passing first through Delta and Chilliwack the trunk road in question will primarily utilize the famous Westminster-Yale highway to the his^ric town of Hope. Thence access is gained by the old Sappers and Miners' road, still in good condition, to the Hope mountains. There is then a slight hiatus in the plan, in consequence of the necessity of obtaining further informative data as to the lowest possible gradients on the east side of Hope mountains, the department having already secured its necessary information with regard to comparative snowfall and kindred essential details. The section thus requiring a further prosecution of engineer's investigations durin g the approach- ing summer, lies between Hope and Princeton, from which latter embryo city connection will be had with Trail by roads already constructed.' That Mr. Shatford, the member for Similkameen, fully deserves the congratulations that he is daily receiving from his constituents upon his success in securing adequate appropriatious for the development of his great district is evidenced by the apportionments for roads alone, which include_&5ooo for the Princeton-Copper Mountain road ; #2dOo for a toad from Five-Mile creek to Princeton ; $3000 for the Granite creek road ; $6000 for the Nine-Mile road; $5000 for the Princeton-Fish lake road. plot too suggestive and too realistic where a mere hint would have been ample. Human depravity needs not to be flaunted from the stage, enough of that is observable in any town. The play was well staged and admirably acted. The Eck- hardt's are a clever, clean company and when they come again it is hoped they will present comedy and vaudeville specialties. NIGHTHAWK NOTES. THE PLAYS BY ECKHARDTS. The Eckhardt Theatrical company played two nights last week in the I.O. O.F. hall to large and appreciative audiences. The first play, 'Brown 's in Town,' evoked continuous laughter and was thoroughly enjoyed. 'Paid in Full' is rather heavy and serious, with a long drawn out Miner's Last Deai of Cards then Takes Revolver Route over Big Divide. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Nighthawk, Wash., March 24.—Almost all the cattle ranchers at the boundary and lower Similkameen have turned their stock out. The range is in fine condir- tion, grass being quite five inches high. Ploughing and seeding are in full swing now. As the suspension foot bridge across the Similkameen river at Nighthawk was being repaired and tightened up on Tuesday last it suddenly turned turtle Luckily no one was on the bridge at the time. Pedestrians have to resort to the ferry again. Measles have been prevalent lately at Oroville, but patients are now nearly all convalescent. The Similkameen river has raised considerably and is very muddy, consequently mosquitoes are beginning to show, and make themselves disagreeable. Archie McDonald, a miner who worked at the Nightnawk mine, killed himself at Loom \s Saturday night by a revolve shot through the head. He* had received a lettej from his sister earlier in the day and seemed depressed after reading it. While playing cards in the afternoon he remarked that he would never deal again. He was unmarried. The body will be sent east, where relatives live, for burial. ' It is to be regretted, if the rumor be true, that the Okanagan Electric Railway from Nighthawk to Conconnlly is likely to fall through, as some of the people are asking too much for their rightofway. Indian Edwards, who lives about six miles from Nighthawk, demands $4000 for fmriighlufway through his orchard, which consists of 83 bearing fruit trees. I have the abeve on good authority. Bert Irwin was a welcome visitor to the lower Similkameen recently. L. W. Shatford, M.P.P., has arrived at Penticton from his parliamentary duties at Victoria. He is expected to come to Princeton in a few days. L.A. Manly, of Coleman, Alb., is a guest at the Great Northern. Dr. Westwood, of Coleman, Alb., is in town-on & few-days', vieit in Connection with his fruit ranch interests. L£,,jl,{L im THE SIMILKAMEEN STAR April 6, 1910. T/he Similkameen Star. J. M. In ten hours these autos will travel to Soda Creek, which now takes two days by horse stage. This is a pointer for some of the stage lines operating, in tp.Princeton. The Dominion government has appropriated $50,000 to be used in experimenting with the smelting of zinc. When a person's patriotism or loyalty to their town does not reach the pocket it is shallow stuff and does not amount to much.
