To consider reports from the Deans on the working out of the proposed alternative budgets "A" and "B". 2. To discuss, as a further alternative, the allotment of fixed gross sums to the various facultie s. 3. To discuss the establishment of a Department of Home Economics. Request of Provincial Parent-Teacher Federation for establishment of Department of Home Economics, Request of Household Science Club for establishment of Department of Home Economics. Request of students of First and Second Years for establishment of a chair of Home Economics. " A letter was read from Mr. J. N. Harvey regretting his inability to attend the meeting. "1 Friday, April 10th, 1931 A "Dutch-treat" dinner meeting of members of Senate was held in the Cafeteria of the University on Friday evening, April 10th, 1931, at which questions arising out of the Agenda of the Joint Meeting of the Board of Governors and the Senate to be held at 8 o'clock were discussed informally. Twenty-six members were present. It was decided that it would be well at the Joint Meeting to have certain members lead the discussion in regard to the various aspects of the matters arising from the Agenda. It was agreed that these should be as follows: Limitation and attendance Dr. Killam Fees Mr. Lord The relative importance of teaching and research work, and the correlation of work in Agriculture in the University with that of the Provincial Department of Agriculture Dr. Vance, Mr. Lett and Mr. Angus It was agreed that the Joint Meeting be asked to consider as the first subject of the agenda the question of principles involved in the discussion of the alternative budgets, particularly those principles already laid by the Senate before the Board of Governors. It was also agreed to recommend that the proceedings of the Joint Meeting be conducted in regular parliamentary fashion and that votes be recorded for the use of the records of Senate and the Board of Governors, further, that the votes of Senate and the Board of Governors be recorded separately. Carried Dr. Killam) Mr. Clark ) That this body approve of the action of Senate in reference to limitation of students. Motion withdrawn. Friday, April 10th, 1931 The discussions on the four principles noted above were led by members as follows: Dr. Killam, Limitation; Mr. Lord, Fees; Mr. Lett and Dr. Vance, The relative importance of teaching and research work, and the correlation of work in agriculture as between the Government and the University. Mr. Angus spoke to the memorandum prepared hy the Heads of Departments in the Faculty of Arts and Science under date of March 27th, 1931. The President replied, calling attention to some of the possibilities which lie in the action proposed. Statements were presented by the Deans in regard to the effects of the proposed reductions on the work in the different Departments and on each Faculty as a whole. No. formal action was taken and no resolutions were passed, as the purpose of the meeting was to enable the representatives of the governing bodies of the University to acquaint themselves with the financial and academic problems involved in making the adjustments necessitated by the reduction in the legislative grant to the Uni ver sity. 136. Friday, April 10th, 1931 Letters from interested organizations were presented in reference to the establishment of a Department of Home Economics. Miss Jamieson) Mr. Lett ) That the matter of the establishment of a Department of Home Economics be laid over to a subsequent meeting of the Senate. Carried The meeting adjourned.
