New Awards Acceptance of the following new awards was recommended to Senate under the terms of award indicated; The B. C Government Employees' Association Bursaries Two bursaries of $150.00 each, the gift of the B. C. Government Employees' Association, are available annually to sons and daughters of members, or of deceased members, and to members themselves. They will be awarded, on the basis of scholastic standing and financial need, to students who are beginning or continuing their undergraduate studies at the University of British Columbia or Victoria College. Selection of the winners will be made by the University in consultation with the Association. Further details may be obtained by writing to the Dean of Administrative and Inter-Faculty Affairs. Country Freight Lines Scholarship A scholarship of $300.00, the gift of Country Freight Lines Limited, is offered annually in the field of transportation or agriculture. It is available to students from the Okanagan proceeding to the Second, Third, or Fourth Year of Commerce, or of Agriculture. The award will be made to a student deserving of financial Assistance, who is selected on the basis of academic standing, personal qualities, and ability and promise in one of the fields for which the scholarship is offered. The Seattle Branch. U. B. C. Alumni. Scholarship This scholarship, gift of the Seattle Branch of the Alumni Association of the University of British Columbia, is available for a student whose home is in Seattle or its vicinity and who is beginning or continuing studies at this University. Selection will be made by the Wednesday, February 8th, 1956 2261 University on the basis of personal qualities, academic standing, and promise. Preference will be given, however, to candidates nominated by the Seattle Branch of the Alumni. The award will normally be made early in August. The Paul A. O'Leary Memorial Essay Prizes Two prizes of $50.00 each, provided anonymously, are to be awarded annually in the Faculty of Medicine for each of two 1500 word essays on a subject - scientific, clinical, historical, literary, or humanitarian - related to the skin. One prize shall be awarded to a student in First or Second Year and one prize to a student in Third or Fourth Year. Any student planning to submit an essay is requested to communicate with the Dean's office for further information. The Victoria Daily Times Prize A prize of $100.00, offered annually by the Victoria Daily Times, is available in competition to students proceeding to a degree. The prize will be awarded for the best piece of writing published or prepared for publication during the year for the mass-media field, including the student paper on the Campus. In judging the submissions the Selection Committee will consider, not only content, style originality and creativeness, but also promise of development. Nominations or applications for the award must be received not later than March 1st, and must be accompanied by the material which the Selection Committee is to consider. United Fishermen and Allied Workers' Union Scholarship in Fisheries This scholarship of $200.00, the gift of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers* Union will be awarded annually to a student who is beginning or continuing postgraduate studies and research in the field of Fisheries. The award will be made to a student who not only has a good academic record, but has shown interest and promise in this field. In making the award consideration will be given to the financial circumstances of those who are eligible. The award will be made on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Zoology and the Director of the Institute of Fisheries. Wednesday, February 8th, 1956 2262 The H. R. MacMillan Scholarships in Forestry and Forest Engineering Through the generosity of H. R. MacMillan, Esq., C.B.E., D.Sc, four scholarships to the total of $600.00 will be available for students in Forestry and Forest Engineering. These awards are as follows: a. A scholarship of $200.00 for the student with the highest standing in Second Year Forestry and Forest Engineering; b. A scholarship of $100.00 for the student in Second Year Forestry with the next highest standing; c. A scholarship of $200.00 for the student with the highest standing in First Year Forestry and Forest Engineering; d. A scholarship of $100.00 for the student in First Year Forestry with the next highest standing. These awards are available only for those who continue their course in Forestry or Forest Engineering in the following session. The Salmon Arm Teachers' Association Scholarship This scholarship of $100.00, the gift of the Salmon Arm Teachers* Association, is available annually for a student in School District No. 20 who is proceeding from Senior Matriculation to University studies in the College of Education and who intends to enter the teaching profession. The award will be made on the basis of personality, attitude to work, and academic standing. Selection will be made by the University in consultation with the donors. Applications, on forms available from the Dean of Administrative and Inter-Faculty Affairs, must be submitted to the University not later than August 1. American Society for Metals. B. C Chapter. Scholarship A scholarship of $100.00, gift of the B. C Chapter of the American Society for Metals, is offered to students in Metallurgy or Engineering Physics (Metallurgy option) proceeding from the Third to the Fourth Year. The award will be made, on the recommendation of the Department, to a student of high academic standing who shows ability and promise in the field of Metallurgy. Wednesday, February 8th, 1956 2264 Professors Emeriti On behalf of the Committee on Professors Emeriti, Dr. Sage recommended that upon their retirement, June 30th, 1956, Dean H. F. Angus become Dean Emeritus of Graduate Studies, Dr. Frank Dickson become Professor Emeritus of Biology and Botany, Dr. A. P. Maslow become Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, Mr. S. C. University Reports Colonel Logan presented an interim report for the Committee on University Reports, recommending that 3000 instead of 1500 copies of the President's Report be printed, and that it be distributed to all members of Faculty, Friends of the University, B. C members of the Federal Parliament, members of the Provincial Legislature, Educational Foundations, etc. The basis of circulation for the Extension Department annual reports was outlined. Colonel Logan stated that the Librarian's Report would be considered at a later meeting of the Committee. Wednesday, February 8th, 1956 2265 Committee to Consider the Establishment of a School of Music Mr. Harlow, Chairman, presented a report of the first meeting of this Committee, at which time the Committee had proposed to include in its discussions (a) the immediate needs in a School of Music, for the College of Education, and (b) the long-range needs. If the scope of the Committee*s deliberations were to be extended, the Committee suggested enlarging its membership to include Dean Chant, Dean Gage, Mr. MacPhee, the Registrar or Associate Registrar, Dr. Mcintosh, Dr. F. Additional Centres for Supplemental Examinations Dean Gage recommended the establishment of additional centres for supplemental examinations in northern British Columbia and the Yukon. Dean Gage ) Dr. Warren) That a centre for supplemental examinations be established at Whitehorse, Yukon Territory; and that the Registrar's Office, after consultation with the President and the Deans, be empowered, on a year-to-year basis, to establish supplemental centres at other points in the Province where there is sufficient demand. From the Joint Board of the College of Education Dean Gage, as Chairman of the Joint Board, reported on appointments to the staff of the College of Education already approved by the Board of Governors: Dr. J. R. Mcintosh, Director of Secondary Teacher Education from July 1st, 1956; Dr. F. H. Johnson, Director of Elementary Teacher Education from February 1st, 1956; Dr. K. F. Argue, Director of Summer Session; Mr. F. C Boyes, Director of Student Teaching in the College of Education from September 1st, 1956; Mr. H. C. Gilliland, honorary appointment as Professor in the College of Education from September 1st, 1956. The Joint Board had also recommended to Victoria College Council that Mr. Gilliland be appointed Director of Teacher Education for Victoria College. A bulletin entitled "Teacher Training Organization for the Year 1956-57" had been circulated to the members of Senate. Reports Returned to the Agenda Reports of Institutes of Fisheries and Oceanography Dean Andrew suggested that each report to Senate should be read by a member or group of members, who could then present a recommendation on the report to Senate. Report on Dental Survey Dean Andrew stated that the report on the dental survey was being edited for publication, and that a copy was being sent to the College of Dental Surgeons. Annual Report of Department of Extension. 1954-55 It was agreed that Dean Gage or his nominee should be asked to study the report of the Department of University Extension for 1954-55 and comment on it at the next meeting of Senate. Report on Health Centre for Children Miss Fallis presented a most interesting report on the Health Centre for Children, and its relation to the teaching programme of the Faculty of Medicine. Carried. British Columbia Guild of Music Teachers Mr. A. W. Chard, Chairman, British Columbia Guild of Music Teachers, had forwarded to the President a request that the University should include in the School of Music a Board of Examiners to conduct practical and theoretical examinations, in addition to the regular course of study. Wednesday, February 8th, 1956 2269 Letters of Appreciation Letters were received from the Canadian Association of Social Workers thanking the University for the central role accorded the School of Social Work at the Autumn Congregation, 1955, and from the Honourable Mr. Justice Lord thanking Senate for its congratulations on his elevation to the Supreme Court. British Columbia Writers' Conference Dr. Birney, Chairman, Continuing Executive, British Columbia Writers' Conference, forwarded a request made by the Conference in January, 1956, that the University consider the possibility of increasing its offerings in Creative Writing. Dean Chant drew the attention of Senate to a new course in this field to be offered at this year's Summer Session. Mr. MacPhee) Dean Gage ) That this request be forwarded to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Head of the Department of English for their consideration. Carried. Vancouver Council of Women A resolution from the Vancouver Council of Women commending the high standard of teacher training and urging that this standard be maintained, was received for information. It was noted that a copy of this resolution had already been acknowledged by the Chairman of the Joint Board of the College of Education. Wednesday, February 8th, 1956 2270 Other Business Dean M. M. Weaver Dean Andrew reported, for the information of Senate, that Dean M. M. Weaver had been forced by reasons of health to tender his resignation as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; that this had been accepted with great regret by the Board of Governors as of June 30th, 1956; that he would be on leave of absence until that date; and that he would remain a member of the teaching staff in the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Copp ) Dr. Cowan) That Senate record its deep regret that it had become necessary for Dean Weaver to resign from the position of Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; and express its great appreciation of his invaluable contribution in establishing the Faculty of Medicine and giving inspired and devoted leadership to the Faculty since its establishment. Carried. It was agreed that a copy of this minute should be communicated to Dr. Weaver. Dean Andrew stated that the Board of Governors had approved the painting of a portrait of Dean Weaver, and drew the attention of the Senate to a portrait of Dr. H. R. MacMillan which had been donated to the University. Home Management House Dean Andrew informed the Senate that the official opening of the Home Management House would be on Thursday, March 8th. Wednesday, February 8th, 1956 2271 Board of Governors' Reception Saturday afternoon, March 24th, had been agreed upon as the date for the Board of Governors' Reception. University of London Various booklets and documents in connection with the installation of the Queen Mother as Chancellor of the University of London, sent by Mr. W. A. McAdam, the University of British Columbia representative at the installation, were made available to the members of Senate. Lectures on Nuclear Engineering Dean Gunning distributed to the members of Senate a notice concerning a series of lectures on nuclear engineering, under the auspices of the Faculty of Applied Science in co-operation with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. Deans of Graduate Studies It was agreed that congratulations should be extended to Dr. Shrum and Mr. Soward as Dean-elect and Associate Dean-elect, respectively, of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
