The Faculty of Arts and Science recommends the acceptance of a prize of $25.00, donated by Chapter 'C of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, for women of the First Year in Arts, to be awarded on the basis of essays on an assigned subject, and the insertion in the Calendar of the following statement: PRIZE OFFERED BY CHAPTER »0». P.E.0.SISTERHOOD This Prize, of the value of $25.00, given by Chapter 'C of the P.E.0.Sisterhood, will be awarded to the woman student of the First Year in Arts who presents the best essay on an assigned subject, selected by the Department of English, subject to the approval of Chapter 'Cf of the P.E.0.Sisterhood. The essay must be handed to the Head of the English Department not later than January 15th. The Faculty recommends further the acceptance of a Prize of #25.00, offered by Chapter •A' of the P.E.0.Sisterhood, for the woman student in the First Year in Arts with the highest standing in English, proceeding to the English of the Seoond Year, and the insertion in She Calendar of the following statement: PRIZE OFFERED BY CHAPTER 'Af. Parried 707 Reports of Committees Dr. Archibald, on behalf of the Committee on Curriculum and Calendar, reported that the calendar for the Summer Session was approved by the Committee and printed, and that the University Calendar was also approved by the Committee and eventually printed. This statement was made for the information of Senate. The Committee appointed to complete details of examination results submitted a detailed report showing the standing of those students whose standing had not been determined at the meeting of Senate in May. Carried 712 A report from the committee of the High Sohool and University Matriculation Board appointed to consider a possible revision of the present arrangement for conducting matriculation examinations, was presented. The clause dealing with the functions of the Board in reference to the limits of work and text books, etc., was amended to read "The Board shall have advisory function, etc.1*. Wednesday, October 18th, 1922 713 THE HIGH SCHOOL A:TD UNIVERSITY MATRICULATION BOARD OF BRITISH COLUMBIA 0Oo AGREEMEN T • between THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA and THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT re Matrioulation The Matriculation Examinations shall be conducted by a Board to be known as The High School and University Matriculation Board of British Columbia. This Board shall consist of the Superintendent of Education, the Registrar of the University, and an equal number of representatives of the Education Department and of the University, the number each year to be determined by the Superintendent of Education. The number of appointed representatives of the University shall not be less than eight. The nominees of the University and the representatives of the Education Department shall be appointed by ^ Counoil of Public Instruction. the. The Superintendent of Education shall, ex officio, be Chairman of the Board, and one of the High Sohool Inspectors, Seoretary and Registrar of the Board. The arrangements for the examinations (the appointment of the supervisors, the remuneration of the Members of the Board, etc.) shall be entirely in the hands of the Education Department. The candidates shall make application to the Department for examinations. Ftes, if any, shall be paid to the Education Department. When the marks have been assembled and tabulated, the returns shall be prepared by the Board in (298) Wednesday, October 18th, 1922. quadruplicate and the Board and the Department, the University, the Board of Sohool Trustees, and the Principals shall be furnished with copies. All certificates shall be issued by the Board under its formal title. All applications for adjustments, concessions, re-readings, etc., shall be made to the Seoretary of the Board. All members of the Board shall hold office until their suooessors are appointed. The Board shall have advisory functions in reference to limits of work prescribed in the various subjects, the text books to be used, and such other matters as may in any way affect the preparation of candidates for the Matriculation examinations, Papers for the September supplemental exam-: inations shall be prepared at the same time as the papers for the June examinations. When marks have been assembled and tabulated, the returns shall be prepared in duplicate and both Department and University shall be furnished with copies. It shall be understood that students who have been barred through sickness or by reason of any other disability from writing on the examinations in June, if the reasons submitted by them are satisfactory to the Superintendent of Education, shall have the privilege of writing the whole' examination in September. Oarried 714 A communication from the Vancouver Sun was read protesting against the manner in which University Spring Examination results were released to the Vancouver papers and urging the claim that all examination results should first be published In the Sun and then in the evening papers. Prinoipal Vance) Mr. Sovereign ) That the practice of Senate has been to release the examination results at the earliest possible moment after acceptance by the Senate, that we are in no degree responsible for the particular time at which the several papers are issued, and that the practice followed in the past will be followed in the future.
