VOL. 3, No. 20 QUEENSTOWN, MASSETT INLET, B.C., WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4, 1914 5 Cents per Copy QUEEN CHARLOTTE OIL FIELDS TO BE TESTED BY GOVERNMENT Great Britain Anxious to Secure Oil on British Territory—Expert will be Sent Out—Graham Island Will Get Attention. Dominion g®vernment oil experts are to be sent to British Columbia to make examinations of the various oil discoveries which have been made here. News of this was communicated recently to several companies who have obtained leases of oil lands in various parts of the Province. These were asked to send to Ottawa what information was in their possession regarding the fields in which they are interested. They were alsp asked to make reports on what work they have done, what improvements have been made and report also on the indications of oil as shown as work progressed. It is explained that this season the government geological department, which has carried its inspection of general mining districts to such a point that accurate information regarding almost any section of the Dominion is now available, intends to proceed to obtain reports by its geologist on the oil lands of the country. Several important oil discoveries have been made in British Columbia, most notably those on Graham Island. On the rock-bound and storm-swept west coast of this island oil tar exudes, natural parrafin wax is found in most unlikely places, the rocks are saturated with oil and tar and burn rapidly on that account, the formations are good for indications of oil, but the drills at work thus far have not yet obtained sufficient depth to tap the flow. The government has had reports on this field before, but nothing of late, nor anything particularly detailed from a geological standpoint. There are several other places in the province where indications of oil are strong. The British Government is particularly anxious at this time to find oil on British soil. Mexico and California at present are the large producers of fuel oil, and this is the character of the oil most largely sought as fuel oil. It is fast taking the place of coal in the shipping world, and also for the furnishing of power for warlike vessels. The fact that the Standard Oil inter-; ests will soon locate a refinery on Bur- rard Inlet, and in this connection will endeavor to obtain possession of such oil lands as are proven, is lending a great deal of activity to the efforts to discover the flows. Government experts last fall examined the discoveries in the vicinity of Edmonton. Attention this season is to be devoted to British Columbia. Diamond Drills For Camp Robertson Scene of First Discovery of Coal on Graham Island Will Be Thoroughly Investigated by Boring. Local News Items Mr. W. L. Barton Getting Suppies in Preparatory to Starting Operations. Regulations For Motor Launches The following notice has been posted in conspicuous places on the inlet: "Take notice that every vessel propelled by gas, fluid, naptha or electric motors, of not more than five tons gross tonnage, must carry a life preserver for each person on board, and also one life buoy with a proper heaving line attached where it may be got at for use in case of accident. Proper precaution also must be taken against fire. The name must be painted or stamped on every vessel, and all the fire buckets and floats, axes and life preservers on board of every vessel must have the name of the vessel painted thereon." As no mention is made of carrying a row-boat, it is possible that the other appliances cover the requirements regarding safety!! Indian Bands Will Attend Exposition The two Indian bands have stopped their winter practice, through the members leaving for their camps and fishing grounds. Instructors Thomas of the Massett Band, and Solomon of the Skidegate Concert Band, deserve great credit for the manner in which they carried out their duties. It is the intention of the bands to arrange for attendance at the Panama Exposition in San Francisco next year. C. Harrison, S. M., James Martin, J. P., and Indian Agent Deasy have promised to donate a silver cup for competition between the two island bands. The year 1914 will be a memorable one on Graham Island as regards the activities by various companies in the search for coal, and oil and it is to be hoped that success will be the outcome of the operations now going on. During the season it is expected that there will be ten drills at work at various points on the Island. Mr. W. L. Barton, who returned from the south last Thursday after a business trip in connection with the operation of his drills, reports that he has been engaged by the Metropolitan Trust Company, of New York, to put down several bore-holes on their property at Camps Robertson and Wilson. The first discovery of coal on Graham Island was made at what is now known as Camp Robertson many years ago by Mr. W. A. Robertson of Victoria.. Although some work was done on the property the extent of the measures were never thoroughly proven. In the shaft that was sunk a seam of excellent coal was found, but faulty. Last summer a gang of men were engaged on this property prospecting and doing other preliminary work. The consulting engineer, Professor Milnor Roberts, of the Washington School of Mines, was so pleased with the results obtained, that it was decided to prove by drilling the extent of the measures. Mr. Barton is now busy getting his outfit and supplies in by way of the Yakoun River, and as soon as the drills have been moved to the new locations boring will be commenced and continued until December. Twelve men will be employed in connection with the work. Bausman, Oldham & Goodale, of Seattle, are the agents for the Company. B. L. Tingley left on the Prince John for Vancouver. Jack Dodgson has returned from Vancouver. E. J. Tingley and Eddie Singer left on a trip to the west coast. W. G. Carr passed through last week en route to join Wright's drill crew. Messrs. Hoar and Lee arrived from south last week to take positions with W. L. Barton. Mr. F. C. Wright left yesterday morning for the East Coast. Good progress has been made in moving the drilling outfit to the new location and the supplies are being taken in from Lawn Hill. Little John Barton got a nasty cut below the knee while playing last week and had to be taken to Massett to receive medical attention. Dr. Graves stitched the wound up and the little chap is getting on fine. Reginald Partridge left last week to spend a few days with Laurie Hughes at Tow Hill. WODEN Mr. and Mrs. W. Prosser of Delkatlah, accompanied by three of their children, spent a very pleasant day renewing old acquaintaaces at Woden. Mrs. R. Rupe, of Eden Ranch, spent a couple of days last week visiting friends on Holland Mountain, demonstrating the fact that it is more blessed to give than receive ; for scarce can a button fall to the ground, but lo it is replaced by her deft needle. Call again Sister Rupe, we like your ways. Mr. Harry Scott passed through here recently en route to the drill camp. Harry is still up to his old tricks of picking up our best packers. More power to you, old scout. Andy Murphy of Massett paid a farewell visit to his many friends at this place, prior to his departure for Prince Rupert. We wish Mr. and Mrs. Murphy success in their new home. The store owned and operated so successfully by Mr. C. C. Grange, has recently been enlarged and transformed into a departmental store, and shows quite a metropolitan front. Messrs. A. McCall, F. Holzer, R. Dill, T. Russell, J. Hippert and G. J, Campbell are all busy erecting new houses on their several pre-emptions, and as they near the finish competition grows warm, with J. Hippert still in the lead. o Visit Of Bishop Du Vernet. Wright are giving Bishop of Caledonia, arrived on a visit a farewell dance on Monday night in to this part of the Diocese last Thurs- Hastie's Hall to which everyone is day. With the approach of Spring and the fact that there will be no cold weather to interfere, it is advisable again to direct attention to the opportunity our settlers have of poultry-raising on our islands. At the south end, where Messrs. Mattock, Smith, Barge, Gillatt and others have poultry farms, the production of chickens and eggs affords a lesson to the settlers of the north end of the island. It has been figured that the cost of producing one dozen eggs, including the purchase of feed, is eighteen cents. Without considering the cost of labor and time, the profits from chicken raising amounts to at least twenty per cent. Is there any better investment than this ? Fresh eggs command all the year round not less than forty cents per dozen. With one hundred chickens the feed account should not be more than fifty cents each day, giving the one hundred chickens twenty puunds of mixed feed daily. A hen should produce at least twelve dozen eggs annually, which means $4.80 for each bird, and the one hundred chickens would give almost $500 worth of eggs in the year, with a cost of $182.50 for feed, leaving $317.50 profit on the eggs alone, without considering the value of the chickens. The egg market will never be flooded, and there is no better food than the chicken arid its product. On every part of the islands we have ideal places for poultry farms. The Prince Rupert market will take every egg and every fowl we can send there. Fresh eggs and chickens are the best of food for the well and the sick. In all works of hygiene egg food is extolled, and eggs should be used in every household. Tho raising of poultry is a work that requires attention, and, if it is the intention to make our islands the supply base of Prince Rupert, there is no healthier or better occupation than poultry farming on Graham Island. mm \0& S.S. A banquet and reception was tendered the visitor in the Town Hall on Saturday evening. Miss Nelson is a graduate of the Port Simpson Indian school and is a proficient musician and vocalist. The Indians of the Massett Reserve have petitioned Rev. W. E. Collison to return and take charge of the spiritual affairs of the large congregation. A committee of the leading Indians requested His Lordship Bishop Du Vernet to appoint Rev. Mr. Collison to the position rendered vacant by the death of Rev. W. Hogan. Byron Burns, of Tl-el River, after a brief visit to Queenstown, returned home last Thursday. On Wednesday night a jolly little dance was given in his honor, Byron helping out with the music on the guitar and mouth organ. Mr. B. L. At the meeting of the farmers held in Victoria, a resolution was brought up by the delegate of the East CoastGraham Island Farmers' Institute, dealing with the question of timber limits: "Resolved, that we instruct our delegate to investigate what can be done with timber limits on which there is practically no merchantable timber, with a view to securing the same for settlers; also to see why laws cannot be passed to log off their lands after they have held them for a certain number of years." It was a handsome brute and sly, Of man or beast it had no fear. Thus spoke "Brick"— "My neighbors all 'Twill be an easy job I'll allow, For I've made up my mind this fall The bull to break to pull the plow." So "Brick" with Engblum that's called "Gus" Set out upon the cattle's trail; They never dreamt of so much fuss Nor thought that they would ever fail. And soon they came to Kundis Isle, Their eyes were bright, their footsteps spry, For out upon the western shore The whole blamed herd they did espy. A smile broke out on " Bealer's " face, "Just over yon's my big, brave bull, To. catch him 'tis an easy case; Of feed I'm sure he must be full." 'Twas easier said than done they found; The bull's consent they hadn't got. He raced around, around, around, Until they all were feeling hot. They chased him up to Tingley's farm And got him safe into the pen ; The rope around his horns they got And sure they felt like heroes then. Come here with me, my bonnie bull, Come here with me, Brickbealer cried. The bull, he came, with head bent low, And " Brick " into the air fired. " Gus " then to the rescue came; He beat the bull with might%nd main And helped Brickbealer to his feet, Till " Brick " once more stood straight again. Next Kundis Slough they then did ford, The tide was high, the water deep! The bull towed "Bealer" straight across And his thanks he thought he'd keep. '' Now see you here, my Justus dear, My words they were not all in vain, I swore to you that I would plow, And so I have and will again." And "Gus" to "Bealer" then replied: '' No need for you to feel so vain, What tho' you plowed both deep and wide You did but plow the watery main!" So they journeyed 'long the shore To where the Nadu empties out, And all the people gathered there The bull did quickly put to rout. Then, as they crossed the Nadu stream The bull tried hard to drown Brickbealer, To save himself our man was keen— Until on shore he felt safer. Brickbealer's language wasn't mild, Nor was it like unto a preacher's; He sure was feeling awful wild, | His anger spoilt his handsome features. The air was blue with words real bad, What words they were I won't repeat, I know it made me feel quite sad For fear some ladies we might meet. Tho' few were there yet all have heard Before "Brick" started on again, He used such awful, awful words The bull just hung his head for shame. " Gol darn your hide, youjson of a witch, If to the ranch I ever get, I'll work you till your good and sick, These funny antics you'll regret." All the adventures that befell The bull and "Gus" and also "Brick," 'Twould take too long for me to tell, And so, I guess, I'd better quit. Nadu. F. C. H.
