An exciting experience occurred in Hecate Straits last week-end. The tug McCulloch left Prince Rupert with a raft in tow, containing 70,000 feet of lumber, to be used in the construction of the new wharf at Sandspit. The weather was a bit rough for such an undertaking, and when some distance out it became worse, in fact it was found necessary to cut the raft adrift to save the tug from being swamped, and she hit back to Prince Rupert. Capt. Wearmouth of the steamer Prince John, was notified of the occurrence and kept hi:-; weather eye open for that raft while coming across. When about 15 miles out from Seal Rocks the Captain espied "the danger to navigation," and the "John" bore down on the raft of lumber and soon had it in tow. With weather anything but pleasant, the "John".;had no easy task in towing the lumber across the Straits, but Sandspit was reached without further mishap late Sunday night. •W.G. Gillett, who built the Massett wnarf and the Delkatlah bridge, is also the contractor for Sandspit wharf. Gillett is sure being followed by a "Jonah," or else has one amongst his crew. Since commencing his contracts on the islands he has been followed to each job by some exciting experience or accident. First, his donkey engine got smashed up while being put on board the steamer at Vancouver, and a new one had to be shipped, causing much delay and expense. Then he had trouble with his piling in the swift running waters of Massett Inlet,-'delay in getting lumber from Prince Rupert; ten men nearly drowned throgh a launch striking a reef while on its way for lumber for Massett wharf. Then Inspector McNeil severely injured on Delkatlah bridge. On top of this comes the tug McCulloch running a close call of being lost. A list of misfortunes surely. But the only thing that Gillett was upset about was the accident to McNeil, his other experiences being .taken as a matter of course; and the Contractor is still smiling. o Will George Do It ? The question is uppermost in the minds of a few of our inquisitive residents as to whether our pioneer store-keeper intends taking the "leap" this hymeneal month—or not. Just the same, Mr. Beattie received a consignment on Wednesday morning last of several pieces of elegant furniture* which, as some one remarked, " was too good for a bachelor's apartments." Anyhow, the furniture is the real, genuine article, made of solid oak and beautifully hand- carved, and comprises of a dressing- table, wash-stand, and sideboard. The articles were made at Pacofi by Paul Kato, a Japanese, and are a credit to his exquisite workmanship. Dr. and Mrs. Wright visited Sandspit Thursday. Mrs. J. L. Barge, who has been very ill during the past week, has greatly improved. John McLellan returned Tuesday after spending , several weeks on hip free- milling property at Gold Harbor. Mr. Green, connected with the Indian Department, inspected the Skidegate village school during the past week. Road Superintendent Sandilands and his assistant, A. J. Gordon, inspected the work at Sandspit and Lawn Hill during the week. Wilfrid V. Doughty and George B. Clayton, of the local fisheries company, went south on Wednesday, after a short visit at Aliford Bay. All births, marriages and deaths on the Queen Charlotte Islands in future must be made with the registrar, E. M. Sandilands, government agent, Queen Charlotte. A local lady was annoyed late one night this week by a midnight prowler. He cleared out after being told to. Just as well he did, because the lady kept a gun handy the rest of that night. Dr. Newcomb, of Victoria, is again visiting the islands for the purpose of collecting Indian curios and seeking further information regarding the Haidas. He is presently touring the west coast. NOTICE—The annual meeting of the Skidegate Inlet Conservative Association will be held at Skidegate Oil-works on Saturday, July 5th, at 8 p.m. All members will please attend.—Thos. R. Davey, secy. Dominion Government Engineer J. A. Miller, of the public works department, came over from Rupert on the "John" last week on buisness in connection with the construction of Sandspit wharf. He returned again on Wednesday. No time has been lost by Contractor Gillett in getting down to work on the Sandspit wharf. Already the piling has been secured and driving will be commenced today. Mr. Gillett will have the wharf completed within a month. The children attending Sandspit school held a picnic on May 24th, after which they had a sale of work. The proceeds, along with another sale to be held at Christmas, will be donated to the Queen Charlotte Hospital. Mrs. (Capt.) Smith had charge of the arrangements. John Simpson, foreman of the rock- work crew at Skidegate, met with an unfortunate accident Thursd.°v afternoon. While getting out of the way of some falling rock he fell, fracturing his right wrist. He was taken to the hospital at Queen Charlotte and his injury attended to by Dr. Wright. dOOTS AND Our stock is now the largest and most varied it has ever been. A large shipment of ore was sent to the smelter at Tacoma from the mine at Cumshewa. H. L. Beresford, of Lockeport, who has been in Vancouver for the past few weeks, is expected back shortly. An invitation is extended to all travellers, seeking health or recreation, to visit Graham Island during the summer season. It is a land where the days are long and bright; where fishing can be indulged in, either in deep sea or in the rivers and lakes, with a guarantee of a large "catch;" motor boating on the inlets is safe, with always a place to anchor. In every bay and cove there is a camping place, with plenty of wood and fresh water. Sea bathing can be indulged in to one's heart content. There are no wild animals, pests or reptiles, to disturb sleep and make life miserable. Snow-clad mountains are within reach, which have never been explored. Flowers and wild fruit grows in abundance ; heat and cold will not trouble one, the climate being equable all the year round. Here and there are towns, in which the tourist may replenish his stock of provisions. The artist will find scenery that cannot be duplicated. Waterfalls and lakes ; streams and rivers ; all of the natural surroundings bring before the visitor the immensity of the potentialities of the island. The distance from the terminus of the great transcontinental railway is less than a hundred miles, and the largest of the group of Sentinal islands is a most fitting resort for those desiring to put aside the cares and worries of the world, and spend a season with the inhabitants of the grandest summer resort on the Continent. J. Sullivan, of Victoria, who owns several claims at Jedway and Lockport, arrived at Jedway last week, for the purpose of doing assessment work on his properties. O. P. Gill, better known as "Soapy," who is presently recuperating at Queen Charlotte, received "good" news a few days ago from Vancouver that a bond on his property will, in all likelihood, be negotiated. Mr. Nestell, well known to mining men on Moresby Island, is back at Jedway again for the summer, looking fitter than ever. Mr. Nestell has a party of surveyors at work on the properties in which he is interested. WE WONDER WHY? Might is right! ■^ Countless thousands mourn ! We punish crime by crime ! Thousands starve in crowded cities ! There is such a rarity of Christian charity! We know so little of the future, and so much of the past! The Golden Rule ia used so little in the affairs of life ! The things of this world are'of 30 little use in the next! Few will know we ever lived, one hundred years from now ! The surging sea of human life forever onward rolls, bearing to the eternal shores each day a freight of souls! Circumstances, over which we have no control, govern our pathway in the journey from the cradle to the grave! David was considered brave, when he had a slung shot and Goliath w«nt to meet him with a sword ! Peace on earth and good will to men, is preached in this age of dreadnoughts and all that goes to make min<:e meat of us all! Few men know, the number of hairs in their heads and bones in their bodies, yet they are aware of the means to conduct the affairs of others! Tom Daykin is still a patient at the Jubilee Hospital, Victoria. His many friends on the Queen Charlottes are pleased to learn that his condition has improved slightly and are in hopes to see him back at Jedway before many weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Ike Thompson, of Jedway, are presently in Vancouver on a business visit. " Ike " has several good claims at Collison Bay and his visit south is in connection with a probable sale of the property. Mr. Hepburn, M.E., of Vancouver, recently examined this property. Ran Macdonald, who was seriously injured at Lockeport some time ago, and taken to the hospital at Prince Rupert for treatment, returned on the "John " last week. "Ran" is looking wonderfully well, and although not yet quite fit, has made a wonderful recovery. Joe Dunn, who was injured at the same time, is still a patient in the hospital, but is recovering and will be out soon.
