The Festival
of Baisakhi- A
Land mark in
the History of
Sikhism
The aroma of the
fading spring season
had not yet vanished
from the foothills of
Shivalik, when the
1 Oth Guru, Guru
Gobind Singh,
stationed as he was at
Kesergarh -now
Anand Pur Sahib,
summoned his
followers to present
themselves in large
numbers this time at
the celebrations of
Baisakhi- a yearly
festival celebrated to
invigorate the restive
Punjab youth for the
harvesting season. It
was 30th March,
1699, the first day of
the month of the
Baisakhi calendar. It
was a special
invitation from the
Guru, according to
the historian Gokul
Chand Narang, the
congregation
numbered more than
80,000 people. A
miracle was about to
happen. Not in the
literal sense of the
term, as Sikhism
proper doesn't believe
in miracles. A new
religion with a
complete codification
of its own was to be
ushered in. After
ruminating a long
time in the Shivalik
Hills, the Guru had
come to some definite
conclusions. Now he
was here to raise a
new army of "Singhs"
(the Lions), who
would fearlessly and
valiantly defend the
out casts, the
Gurmit Singh Tiwana
downtrodden, the
lowly, as well as
highly placed priestly
Hindu upper class
brahmins who were in
distress then.
According to the
gathering of the
devotees, the Guru, in
no uncertain terms,
demanded
unquestioned
sacrifice on the part
of hs followers. Let
those who stand for
total sacrifice give
away their heads for
the ideals that the
Guru cherished most.
A demand for the
heads symbolic of
total sacrifice at the
behest of the Guru
was amply responded
to till a digit of five
was reached. It is no
mere coincidence that
three of them
belonged to lower
classes, whose cause
the Guru espoused
most. These five later
on came to be known
as "the five beloved
ones" ( panj peyaras).
They were the first to
be baptized by the
Guru and 'Singh' was
added lo their first
name. In turn the
Guru asked them to
baptize him in the
same manner. He
considered himself to
be an integral part of
the new faith. It was
resolved that after the
10th Guru, the
gurudom in person
had to come to an end
as the movement had
nurtured enough not
to seek the guidance
of any living being.
The 'Adi-granth1- the
Holy Scripture was
installed as the 11th
Guru, and was
considered as guiding
principles of the
Khalsa, who were
further ordained to
revere, read, recite,
understand, practice it
in their daily lives and
propagate this word
of the lord rather than
worship it as the
Hindus had
worshipped their gods
and goddesses. The
teachings of the
scripture was
considered as the
guiding principles of
the Sikh people. The
Guru gave his army of
the valiant, a special
dress very distinct
from the commonality
to be identified as the
servants of God. The
Khalsa was directed
to be ever ready to
fight to bring the
reign of God on the
earth; to defend the
lowly, the destitute
and tortured alike.
Henceforth,
whosoever wanted to
join the army of the
Guru had to be
baptized, would have
to abide by the code-
of-conduct of a
gursikh and wear five
K's and be known as
Singh (a lion). Thus
in the hands of our
10th Guru, the
philosophical, cultural
and social revolution
initiated by Guru
Nanak within the
complex

SANT - an abused title
I have, in my current profession as a musician (World Music & Gursangeet), the
opportunity to interact with Sikh communities around the world. In my travels I am
often hearing of 'Sants' who come around to fleece naive/gullible Sikh communities in
the name of religion. I have also heard some rather disturbing stories about them and
witnessed some episodes which have convinced me that the prefix 'Sant' in front of a
Sikh's name today is a leverage to extort more money out of Sikhs. It does not
necessarily reflect the lofty spiritual attainments one associates the word 'Sant' with. I
contend that the word Sant applied officially as a prefix to a human being should be
either strictly scrutinised before being bestowed or anyone using it should be treated
with suspicion. Before condemning me to the fires of hell please read on.
It is interesting to note at the outset that during the lives and times of our deh-dhari
(human) gurus we had some very highly emancipated souls like Baba Budha, Bhai
Tarn, Bhagat Gurdas, Bhai NandLal, Bhai Mani Singh etc. Not one of them was called
a Sant. Why has this prefix Sant cropped up in front of the names of supposedly
elevated souls? Which authority of the Sikhs bestows the title Sant on a deserving
individual? Gurbani speaks of showing respect and showing hospitality towards sants
and not criticising lsants\ But I do not think gurbani supports the official prefix Sant
in front of someones name. There is a great difference. On the one hand someone is a
saintly elevated soul and on the other a Sikh masquarades as a Sant so-and-so, to gain
attention, respect and the financial gains which follow.
My childhood memories of one particular Sant are good memories. In Malaysia, in my
youth was Sant Baba Sohan Singh JL He was a close friend of my father (who was a
Granthi Sahib) and lived all his life as a bachelor. He owned no material possessions
except a few clothings and lived in a room at the back of the Gurdwara Sahib in
Malacca. Never a furrow on his brow, never spoke ill of anyone - a truly gentle,
detached and god-loving souL Being a rather wayward youth, my father hoped that.
Baba Ji's blessings and advice would put some sense into my thick head! It must have,
because my fond memories of Baba Ji are as strong as my memories for my venerable
father. I also had the honour of playing the tabla with the Sikh leader, Sant Baba Fateh
Singh Ji on his tour of Malaysia in the mid-sixties. He was a great man. Of course we
know of the great deeds of Sant Baba Jernail Singh Ji Bindranvale. Sant Baba Sohan
Singh Ji always discouraged anyone from referring to him as a 'Sant'. Sant Baba Fateh
Singh and Sant Baba Jernail Singh were both Sikh leaders. Sikh leaders yes. But
should they have been considered of the elevated status of'saints' as well?
Nevertheless, the *Sants' I am concerned about are those who seem to appear from
nowhere, demand hospitality (and 'maya') from the populace and collecting all the
money they can by ridiculous ceremonies like house-blessings, family blessings,
children blessings, fertility blessings, pet blessings, possession blessings or asking fer
donations for building some village gurdwara in Punjab. After the extortion of Sikh
'gullibles' they disappear perhaps to reappear in a year or so to collect more.
I am also concerned about 'Sant Dera 's' (Sant ashrams) which help to fragment
orthodox Sikhism by carrying out their own practices and having their own followings.
Some advocate the continuous reciting of Sukhmani Sahib orJaap Sahib or Naam
Malas, continuous Akhand Paths, etc. etc.
As Sikhs we seem apprehensive about criticising such charlatans. It has been pointed
out to me by some 'Sant-followers' that gurbani says that any nindiya
(criticism/condemnation) of 'sants' means suffering for the one criticising . I just wish
to remind Sikhs that Guru Gobind Singh Ji is reputed to have thrown such charlatans -
who were then called 'masands' into boiling couldrons!
After my pleasant early youth experiences of 'Sants' in which the likes of Sant's Attar
Singh, Isher Singh/Nand Singh also feature, my current experiences of 'Sants' is
dismal and thereby my article. Please forgive the personal nature of this article as the
best way of driving my point home is to narrate personal experiences.
Today, as you travel through Punjab on yatra (pilgrimage) you see these 'Sants'.
Some looking very young coming and going in impressive jeeps, body-guards and
entourages. I asked one why he was called a Sant. His reasoning was that with the
prefix 'Sant' people gave him respect and that allows him to do Panthic seva more
effectively. Fair enough! So it has nothing to do with being a spiritually elevated
human being, does it? The title is a means to an end. So we cannot possibly equate the
word Sant with the Christian equivalent of Saint. It appears to have nothing or very
little to do with saintliness these days. We should not then equate it with the word sant
as used in Sukhmani Sahib then, should we?
A very young looking kirtania (minstrel) calls himself Sant Anoop Singh. Is this not
the fiaudulant use of the word Sant to make more money from sangats? He cannot
possibly be a Sant at an age of about 20 to 30 years. Of course one might say that Sri
Guru Har Krishan was only 5, but let us not compare these people with our gurus. A
Sant Makhan Singh is going around in Malaysia and now in Australia collecting for a
Women's Shelter in Punjab. He did a 48 day ketha (discourse) of the Sukhmani Sahib
in the gurdwara in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia recently. A faithful told me that this Sant
had said that if you listen to a 48 day continuous discourse of Sukhmani one would be
saved. O yeah! I do not know how intelligent, level-headed, highly educated Sikhs can
believe such rubbish. Forty eight days to Salvation! Of course, the Sant spent a great
deal of time on the 'astpadian' (stanzas) concerning Sant mehma (in praise of sants)
and Sant nindiya (those who condemn sants) to re-inforce his position.
In the Sant Dera's in Punjab, priority is given to overseas Sikhs for Sant Darshan
(audience with the sant). It happened in two dera's with me. One was a Sant Baba
Virsa Singh in Mehrauli, Gadaipur near Delhi It was announced at langgar that the
Sant Ji would not see anyone the day we were there. In feet he had apparently not
given 'darshan' for two days - doing his tapasya (meditation) no doubt. My wife and a
few friends from Punjab were naturally disappointed. I took a bet with them that the
Baba Ji would see us. I went up to the sevadar and told him that it was a pity that the
Baba Ji could not see us and that we were from Australia. We were leaving when he
came running to inform us that the Baba Ji would give audience. We were naturally
pleased! The second episode was with a certain Sant Babu Jaswant Singh in Ludhiana.

OTTAWA - April 2,
1998 -Tuesday in the
House of Commons,
Dewdney-Alouette
MP Grant McNally
criticized the
government for taking
all the credit for a
balanced budget
while still not
respecting the wishes
of Canadians to get its
financial house in
order. McNally made
his comments while
speaking on a bill to
implement the budget.
"On budget day the
finance minister stood
up and strongly told
Canadians that he had
slain the deficit
monster. Well 1
disagree. The deficit
has been fought on
the backs of the
taxpayers," said
McNally.
McNally pointed out
that in a recent survey
of Dewdney-Alouette
constituents, 72% of
the people who
responded said that
government spending
should be reduced and
that only 3% believed
that spending should
be increased. More
than 90% said that
they supported the
idea of passing
legislation to prevent
deficit spending.
Concerning the debt,
96% of the
respondents indicated
that they thought the
government should
set real goals and
timetables to lower
the debt. McNally
expressed skepticism
that the$583 billion

Avoid
Investment
Pitfalls Along
The Road to
Success
Jessie Sidhu BA
Associate Financial
Advisor
We all have the best
intentions when it
comes to preparing
for our financial
future. We resolve to
find the surest and
safest investment
vehicle. We read
magazines and books,
attend seminars and
courses in an effort to
find the path to
financial wizardry.
But there isn't any
yellow brick road,
and the route to
financial security is
strewn with pitfalls.
Few financial success
stories are without
episodes of failure.
The trick is to keep
those failures to a
minimum by
recognizing the
common traps
investors fall into.
Here are some
common mistakes:
Not setting goals: It
can be difficult to
find the right advice
or the right products
when you're not clear
on the direction you
want to lead. Setting
a goal is fundamental.
Consider your
circumstances and
think about what you
want for yourself
financially in the
future. Define your
goals as clearly as
possible, and set
specific objectives as
certain reference
points along the way.
Procrastination: If
you don't have a goal,
you're not likely to
get excited enough
about your financial
planning to get
yourself started.
Don't keep putting
your financial future
off.
Missing the big
picture: If your plan is
to be to workable, you
have to take a step
back and look at all
aspects of your
financial situation and
how they interrelate.
When many people
think about financial
planning, they think
about investing or
retirement, but often
neglect considerations
such as the tax
aspects of their
investment decisions,
or concentrate on
short-term objectives
while sacrificing
long-term dreams.
Fear and greed:
Some say that next to
politics, investing is
the most emotional
business around. It
can be tough to make
objective decisions.
Try not to get
attached to any
business or
investment decision
you make. Learn to
cut your losses and
take your profits
when f|. opportunities
permit. One of the
best ways to take the
emotional
involvement out of
the process is to
develop a disciplined
approach to your
portfolio
management.
Disciplined investors
rebalance their
portfolios
periodically, thus
forcing themselves to
sell stocks as markets
are rising and acquire
stocks as markets are
falling. To put it
simply: buy low and
sell high.
Avoid Crowd
behaviour: Most
investors enter the
market at the wrong
time. Investment fads
change from decade
to decade, or even
year to year, but
human nature remains
constant. Try to keep
your focus on your
own goals and needs.
Misguided effort:
Managing your own
financial affairs takes
considerable time and
effort. Although
hiring a professional
Financial Advisor
does mean some
expense, it may pay
off by helping you
make better-informed
decisions.

PUNJABI PATRIKA H APRIb 8. 1998
Appeal to the
Community
In 1982, a group of
concerned churches,
with the help of the
United Way, set up a
system to help feed
the needy of Surrey
and North Delta. All
people involved at
this time were
volunteers. In 1991
the Surrey Food Bank
assisted some 48,000
persons. Where as
currently, there are
over 100,000 people
served per year. Out
of which 50% are
children under the age
of sixteen.
To qualify for
assistance from the
food bank, you must
prove the need. Low
income earners which
include the
Unemployed, the
elderly and single
parents must show
rent receipts and
proof of picture ID.
The Surrey Food
Bank has branched
out into other areas
such as Community
Gardens, Community
Kitchens, Food
Buying Clubs and
drop in centers.
The Surrey Food
Bank continues to
share larger donations
with other food banks
in B.C. The Surrey
Food Bank is a nonprofit, nongovernment service.
that feeds people who
are poor and in need.
Over the years the
demand for service
has increased with the
growing population
and the uncertain
economic conditions.
Presently, the Surrey
Food Bank is in need
of a refrigerated
truck to assist with
the service growth.
On July 5, 1998 at the
annual MIRI PIRI
PARADE, our
community can:
-HONOUR the
tradition of langar and
help those in our
community who are
hungry.
-CONTRIBUTE to
the community for the
greater good of all
people.
-STRENGTHEN the
bond between
cultures that make up
the Canadian mosaic.
Please support the
efforts of the Surrey
Food Bank, by acting
as community role
models and donating
funds toward a truck.
This donation will
clearly demonstrate
the cultural value of
giving support to
those in need.
Please join us in
making this vision
come true for all who
are in need.
Generous supporters
will be recognized on
the truck. To donate
or get involved in this
worthwhile cause
please contact Jas
CJ596-4321 (local
304) or Brian Favelle
#581-5443.
