THE PROSPECTOR =4 VOL. £ NO. 47 LILLOOET, B. C, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1915. $2 PER YEAR Lost in Mountains Five Days 0. South, a lad of eighteen years, employed by Mr. Robert Ruddock, on the Lytton-Lillooet road, went out with a party of boys last Sunday to hunt deer. The lad got greatly excited on seeing a big buck. He fired one shot, ancl missed, but followed on the deer's track and eventually killed him. Unfortunately, he got separated from his companions, and being "green" to the mountains, he was seon lost, but eventually turned up in the neighborhood of Little Hat Creek, a distance of nearly sixty miles from his starting point Knowing absolutely nothing of the country he endeavoured to get information from an individ- uai he met as to his whereabouts, This individual refused to give him any information unless he paid the sum of $3.00. As the lad had no money, and was footsore and weary from his long "hike" in addition to being hungry, he was obliged to sell his brand new rifle in order to satisfy the avarice of this inhuman beast. The lad eventually reached Ashcroft on Thursday night, and reported his safe return to his friends by phone, they having been-'out searching for him everyday since.—Journal. New Pamphlet We would like nothing better than for this inhuman beast to make a trip to Lillooet, and for Mr. South to be here to identify him. General News oi; Lillooet District Under the direction of the Hon the Minister of Lands, an attractive pamphlet entitled "British Columbia Timber" has been prepared for distribution among the buyers in overseas markets. It is intended to draw the attention of importers overseas to the forest products of the province, and especially to the facilities for exporting British Columbia lumber. Consisting of nearly forty pages, and containing nearly thirty illustrations, the pamphlet treats of the principal exportable woods, their qualities and uses, together with information concerning their strength values, and suitability for various uses. The Road to Cariboo BY A. MARTLEY Land-clearing by settlers in the Tete Jaune Cache district has been extensively undertaken this year, and good crops are reported generally, especially in view of the fact that many areas are virgin ground, and have been broken up for the first time this year. Now is the time to get. that debating club formed for the winter evenings. Whenever you see a shadow, it means there is a light close by. A. Mole of the North Fork of Bridge river, spent a few days in town during the past week. Discontent of the salmon regulations is quite prominent.these days, Mr. Slocombe, teller of the local branch of the Bank of B.N. A, has been transferred to Van- cou\er. Mr. T. P. Reed, who has been spending the summer months in the Chilcoten country, returned to Lillooet last week. Things are good is that section. The Secretary of thQ Lillooet War Fund has received a receipt from Vancouver, for the sum of $207.00, the amount recently sent to No. 5 General Hospital C.E.F. fund. " What is the difference, " a_ked the teacher, "between caution and cowardice?" Johnny, who observed things carefully for so youthful a person, answered: "Caution is when you're afraid, and cowardice is when the other fellow's afraid. The sum of $1000.00 has been forwarded to the Minister of Militia for the purchase of the Machine Gun. The Acting Minister of Militia in answer states that he will arrange for the purchase a»d forwarding of the gun to one of the battalions in service overseas. Miss O. Beloud and Mr. B. Beloud, drove into town last Sunday morning, from the 17-mile Ashcroft Road ranch. Mr. and Mrs. J. M, Mackinnon, of Vancouver, accompanied by their son and daughter, arrived in Lillooet this week. You have read the story of the monkey, and the mountain goat, but you should hear the story of the bear. Rags and cloths satuated with cleaning and polishing oils may ignite spontaneously in a few hours. Burn them at once. Mr. T. C. Eastman of New York, left for the mountains this week, on a big game hunting expedition. Tom Manson, accompanied by a retainer with eight pack horses, is his guide. Mr. and Mrs. Geo, Carson and little son arrived in town this week from Pavilion. They were accompanied by R. Powers who speaks highly of the Pavilion district. Pastor Russell lost his suit a- gainst the Brooklyn Eagle. The court held that the Journal was telling the truth when it advertised him as a fraud. - Western Catholic. Mr. F. Shacklock. Australian Cadet Ad'/ance Manager, paid Lillooet a visit this week, he expressed himself as being delighted with the trip, adding, you certainly have something to show us in British Columbia. The special "Tag Day" colle- tions for the C.E.F. No. 5 hos- have reached the sum of $24,275. 39, towards the $25,000.00. There are yet some good size places to hear from which will in all probability bring the amount up to $27,000.00. Campers snd others are apt to be careless regarding the wearing of damp or wet clothing. This practice is conductive to rheumatism and other ils. Care should be taken to have clothing and beds thoroughly dry and well aired. Lillooet the walled city and garden of wonder Thirty leagues from the ocean roar, Where the comber from the far East flings his thunder By the bays on the Western shore, Resumes her rightful role of the gate to Cariboo, Userped for fifty years By another town, that knew No respect of its gompers. You can reach ti,e princely portal by the I'.G. Eastern rail, And take tlie King's highway to Cariboo, You can wander day by day along the big white trail And camp by night beneath the tent of blue. You will find a fine large country and some fine large hearted folk, Striving to do the best that in them lies, You may find a friendly smile or hear a hearty joke, Or get a kindly glance, from starry eyes. You'll see some lovely valleys, and woods, and lakes, and streams, And over all you'll hear the call Of a summer-land of dreamt. Oh where on earth will you behold, A lovelier, or more entrancing sight, Than tke lake, and valley, of La Hache, unfold, In a moonlit August night? Ancl you'll see great fields of grain ashine To the red horizon bars, Aud lofty line of black-plumed pine In a blaze of northern stars. You will hear the hoot of the horned owl And the were-wolf's foster child, The grey coyote eerie howl A pean to the wild. ; And the weird cry of the loon by night I And the honk of the geese at dawn,. And the winnow of the wild duck flight By upland lake, and lawn. There are ranches in the gloaming And homsteads in the haze, Where the silky cows come homing And the bells ring on the braes. For the cheery word and pleasant smile Thank God -as well you may - They lighten the heart, and shorten the mile, When you roam on the big highway. Provincial Fires Advices reaching the Minister of Lands concerning the fire situation prevailing in the various forest districts of the province show a great improvement in the roast districts as a result of the recent r^ins, although there is yet some prospect of a recurrence of fires owing to the drying out of vegetation, that is, unless kept in check by occasional showers. Conditions continue to be safe in the Hazelton district, while all fires are out in the Tete Jaune division. A serious fire broke out at Pemberton Portage on August 29, the fire front being- two and a half miles wide, and threatening timber limits. The lattst report is to the effect that heavy rain the same night and following day has enabled this outbreak to be got under control. The situation in the Thompson valley is serious, high winds speeding the Blue river fire towards the timber line, an area of nearly one thousand acres being affected. In the Vernon district, rains have improved the situation, but dry vegetation in the open timber still constitutes a hazard. Small fires are reported in the Nelson and Cran brook districts, but occasional showers and cool nights are doing much' to keep the outbreaks in check. The weather conditions thru- out the province are gradually becoming more favorable with respect to forest fires, a lew barometer indicating showery and unsettled weather. This is one of the expressions which has been used at public gatherings by the leader ot* the Australian "Cadet Students", who will arrive in Lillooet Friday evening (tonight) and stage their remarkable Musical Comedy, "Called to the Front," on Saturday evening. The young visitors number thirty-five and were organized last year to make a tour of the English-speaking world, with the idea of promoting closer relationship between the different dominions. Just on the eve of their departure War was declared and all their plans regarding sailing dates were thrown into confusion. It was decided to suspend the time of departure until conditions became more set- tied and a period of five months delay was decided on and the tourists left Austrrlia in February. In the meantime, however, new conditions brought about by the war, chiefly the necessity for volunteers, reduced the group from forty-five to thirty-five. For a time it was thought that the whole undertaking would be best abandoned, but enquiry showed that the^e was a big field for Imperial service in the United States. As twenty-five of the young travellers had as part of their preparation for the tour been trained to give public lectures, it was seen that their ability in this direction could be turned to good account, The party arrived in San Francisco in March and after taking a prominent part in the Exposition festivities, undertook a tour of 70 American, towB? and cities, al- wa\s making their official entry with colours flying and the band playing inspiring martial airs. The first halt after civic greetings and formal receptions was usually at the leading High Schooi, where permission had obtained by tha advance manager, Mr. Shacklock, for the boys to give short talks on the British Empire and Australia. In order te observe the order for neutrality, widely expressed by American people, the young lecturers talked only on history, resources and industries of their country, avoiding any reference to the war. The most fruitful of these meeting was the fifteen or thirty minutes set apart for the listen ing students to ask questions. Without exception, there was always one student, at least, who would ask "what part is Australia playing in the war?" or an equivalent query. This would give the Imperial visitors foil license to cover the whole war situation from the Allies standpoint, beginning with opening of hostilities, the entry of the Empire inta the conflict and the spontaneous response to the "Call of Duty" from Australia, Canada and New Zealand; j thus were all the niceties de- ! manded by a strict observance of | neutrality as the Americans desired it, diplomatically covered while the cause of the Allies was being effectively presented in a clinching and convincing manner. The young speakers entered into their work with a zest and ferver borne of an ever-present pride in their country, and the part she is playing in the great struggle for human liberty. One of the Cadets remarked to a Vancouver citizen:- "You remember the story of the little Du«h boy who saved part of his country from being flooded out by discovering just a little hole in the wall of one »f the dykes and holding his hand there until GILLETTS CLEANS-DISINFECTS help arrived. If he hadn't have done that the hole would have grown bigger and bigger antil the wall was washed away and the land was under flood." We felt something like that little boy, bnt he had a torrent of water to hold back, while we had to deal with a flood of German lies. Prior to leaving Melbourne, the Federal Capitol, the young travellers were given an official send- off from the Australian Commonwealth Government.
