THE ^OJ ' <_a-^ b \j^ulJuu^-^ nJ Vol. i. No. 31 LILLOOET, B. C. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1899 $2.00 a year. ti THE LORNE OROUP. Mr. ChM. F. Law, of Vancouver, who I a few months ago secured a. bond on the jLorne group of claims on Cadwallader,re- jturnsd to Lillooet last Monday evening. [He has just returned from a trip to ' Montreal and Toronto where he had been interviewing capitalists to invest (.money in this section. He secured the necessary means for the Lome proposition and will start at once opening up the property, backed by a strong syndicate. s- The work to be carried on will be ta sink a compartment shaft, four by six feet, one hundred feet deep, lagged and timbered. It is expected the shaft will be completed in about three months. J. R. Williams will have charge of the work and left yesterday with a gang of 1 seven men from town. About one ton of supplies have been purchased and i_ being packed in by Indians. Prospecting work will also be done on other portions of the group. The Lome group is composed of three ' full claims, the Marquis, Lome and » Golden King. Last summer the owners did quite a bit of surface and prospecting work on the Lorne vein, and also built an arrastra which they ran for* month with fairly good success. The Lorne vein is about 4 feet wide on the surface and shows up in excellent shape and with rich ror-k. The arrastra was run for about thirty days in all, running about a week at a time, and the results were a saving of about $1,000 out of 80 tons of rock crushed. The tailings were all saved as it was estimated that only 60 per cent, of gold was saved by this primitive method of mining. The Lorne is a first-class property and everyone who has seen it has been perfectly satisfied that it will become one of the best properties in the district. The people in whose hands it is at present intend to go to work and thoroughly open up' the property in such a shape that when it is necessary to put in machinery they will ha>« sufficient ore on the dump and the workings in such a ■nape that the work can go right ahead without a stop. Mr. Law is a man of practical experience in mining and knows what is neceisary for a working of thiu kind and will have the affairs conducted in proper shape. The opening of the Lorne means considerable for this section and with the advent of such a strong syndicate in our midst as the one Mr. Law represents ' means that it will only be a short time until others will become interested in the Lillooet district and make known to the world the richness of the country. ' Mr. Law will remain in town for a few days to'see that everything is properly arranged for working before leaving for the coast. Seaton lake. The steamer Minnehaha was to leave to-day for the Mission with the first load. Arthur Noel has about fifty horses and a number of sleds ready and as soon as the freight arrives will1 take it at once to the summit, keeping the whole thing as clo e together as dos- sible. After reaching Jacks Landing! dear sailing will be had if the weather continues as at present. The work of moving the machinery will - be pushed ahead as fast as possible, and if no un- forseen accidents happen the machinery should be on the ground in six weeks or a couple of months. Fred Appleyard' will take the machinery up the lake and Mr. Noel will take it the rest of the way himself. REFORM NEEDED. Bend'Or Mill. R. H. Wood who had charge of building the dam and preparing the mill site at the Bend'Or mines arrived in town last Friday evening and left on the stage next morning for a short viltt to Vancouver. He has everything in readiness for the arrival of the machinery and will bring back with him a few millwrightr to help, htm. complete the work; ; '" at a been The and The Me May. The ledge on the lower tunnel distance of one hundred feet has struck on the Ida May property, ledge is about three feet in width shows up good quartz. Work will dis- CJntii ue on the tunnel and t • work of sinking on \ the ledge in the upper workings will be commenced with the intention of sinking on the ledge for a dibtance of 50 feet. The work will be continued with seven men working day and night shifts. A Bold, Bad nan. Evidently he thinks the so-called Christianity of the past ninteen centuries has been very far from what real Christianity ought to be. The article in which lie makes this suggestion, published in the current North America is pre-eminentl" socialistic in nature, and its termination is particularly characteristic of the author. Speaking of the death of a poor old woman who Hold sweets lo the children of Cowgate, in the Scottish capital, but whose largeness of the heart prevented her from ever letting a child who could not afford to pay her pass her basket without giving a sweet for love he says: 'When that old woman arrived at the gates of heaven, there were more angels to meet her and take her to the throne of the Almighty than there would be for the arrival of all the dukes in Christendom. If there are social sets in heaven I guess that old woman ia a leader of fashion among the four hundred there— or my idea of heaven is altogether wrong." Hints to Advertisers. Advertising is business news. It tells of things which are of great daily importance. It is of more account to the frugal housewife to know where she can get certain necessary commodities at a less price than usual than to know all the troubles in Siam or Alaska. The news should be news. It should not be allowed to grow stale with repetition in the same old way. If you can only advertise in a small way, pick out the paper in your territory and spend ALL of your advertising money in that. Don't scatter. When your business grows, and you can spend more money, buy more space in the ( same paper, until you. are sure you are using all you poofitably can. The Queen's Counsel Bill. The Queen's counsel bill was up for second reading, in the provincial legislature, but upon Mr. Eberts'grequest, Hon. Mr. Martin postponed the second reading until Monday. The Queen's counsel bill provides that attorneys-general shall be appointed queen's counsel, that ex-attorneys-general shall also be appointed, and that the lieutenant-governor-in-counsel may appoint not more than two new Q. C.'s each year from among those who have at least five years' standing at the bar. In all courts the attorney-general for the time being shall take precedence and it shall be considered contempt of court for counsel not appointed to appear in court in any of the recognised insignia of a Q. C. The effect of this last section will be to bar Dominion Q.O.'s from wearing their bilk gowns in provincial courts. pitzsimmons' Money Covered. Byracue, N. Asbestos is a most remarkable mineral beittg elastic yet brittle, a stone which floats, and capable of being spun and woven like wool. A strand weighing less than an ounce can be Bpun out to 100 yards of thread, and it is not surprising that the ancient believed it to be a vegetable and not a mineral. By them it was often used for shrouds for great men, some of which have been found. Itaho served for aicks in temples where the tires were mver extinguished, being woven into a tube through which the oi! rose, the wick itself remaining uncon- sumt-d. The same kind of wicks are used by the Greenlanders and Esquimaux in Labrador. Up to a very recent date practical!) all the asbestos that was used was produced in Iialy. The Canadian asbestos was not put on the market till 1877, although its existence was known to geologists long before. Tne tirst mine opened was at Thetford, and the fibre from that mine is still considered supreme. The Italian asbestoj is a variety of hornblende, but the Canadian is fibrous serpentine, and is propel Iy called chrysotih. The chemical com position is not very different, but the Italian contains no moistu.e which the other does. In Russia enormouB deposits of the mineral exists, but the quality of the fibre is inferior, and for that reason is not much in demand. South Africa produces a small quantity, but the lead has now for many years been maintained by Quebec. The mining of ihe mineral is very costly, over 100 tons of rook having to be mined for every ton of the finished asbeBtos. This has laid a heavy burden on the proprietors of the Quebec mines, many of which are not well situated for gelling rid of the waste. In the case of one mine ii was necessary to build an incline tramway 3,800 yards long up which the loaded cars are drawn to dump the waBte. The atbestor of the eastern town (ship is found iu serpentine, _^and that oi Ottawa county in terpentinous limestone It is aldo found in connection with the deposits of phosphate in Buckingham. Hornblende asbestos is also found in Quebec but is not yet u llized. It is found in irregular veins which aie usually vtry thin, ramifying through the country rocks. In the last few years the discovery of asbestic has been made at Danville. This is a fibrous maierial which remains after the richer anbestus has been extracted and can be produced from quarries, being hoisted by cable and derrick, and on being raised to the surface is passed through rolls, over a picking table, and then through a Cyclone pulverizer wilh exhaust pans, and finally over a series of gigs and shaking tables, which separate the fluffy fiber from tue stone. On reaching the end of the shaking tables it is sucked by a fan and poured out through a pipe to undergo compression, and it is then sacked. The value of the material is from $8 to $50 per ton. Extended uses could be found lor it if it could be produced cheaper. At present it makes the best packing for engines, aud it is also largely used as a covering for boilers and Dipes to prevent radiation of the heat. It has been used for the manufacture of paper and cloth. It is valuable in refrigerating chambere. In beetroot sugar refineries it is used as a filter. It also eerves this purpose in chemistry, as acids destroy ordinary filter paper. It is utilised for the lining of furnaces and the packing of stoves, but its chief use in the fufure will be for wall plaster. A single coating of the asbesto is laid on without the preparations necessary for ordinary plaster, it being'possible to put. it on the bare bricks, and within a few hours will be hard and smooth. This will render the walls or ceilings on which it is put absolutely fireproof, also against rats and mice. Heat will not crack it and it keeps a room warmer than ordinary plaster. It has recently heen discovered that sponge is not readily inflammable. A compound has therefore been made of finely divided particles of sponge and asbestos which is fireproof. In electricity it is much used on account of its heat-resisting and insulating qualities. In the region which has been the seat of great volcanic activity as this has, and which is in consequence largely compos d of serpentine and allied minerals, there is a fair prospect of success for those who search for this valuable mineral. In fact it has already been found in some localities in the district, and time will show whether it exists in workable qualities. It is certainly one of those minerals which the prospectors oi Kamloops should be on the look out for. It must be remembered that it is apt to be very pockety and irregular, and that therefore there is more risk in mining it than in nining honor cop per or moBt metallic minerals.—G. F. Monecton, in Inland Sentinel. The pjlice force at Vancouver will be increased by six more officers. It 18 reported that a couple from Lillooet are in Vancouver and will shortly be united in the holy bonds of matrimony.
