Exhibition Was A Surprise To Even The Most Sanguine — Never Before Was New British Columbia's Resources Brought To Better Advantage Before The Public Than At This Display—Children Of Schools Attended In A Body And Sang Patriotic Airs At The Formal Opening BAND CONTEST WILL HE HELD THIS EVENING Three Indian Bands Will Contest For The Coveted Prizes. At the Exhibition building this evening, Ihe annual contest among the Northern Indian hands will Kike place. Three bands are here iliis year. Kitlmaat, Aiyansh and Metla- katla. All of these bands are in good form this year, and a spirited competition is assured. The bands are playing at the Exhibition also, The Exhibition opened yesterday with Children's Day. It proved a grand success, and in spite of a little rain, the attendance was excellent. The display in nearly all lines Is of the best character. There are 274 entries, as compared with 141 last year. Then there are four district exhibits, where only two were forthcoming last year. The displays far exceed the expectations of lhe most sanguine, and fully justifies the decision lo hold the Fair this year. The district exhibits from Prince George, Ketchikan and Lnkelse Valleys, Skidegate ai)d Sandsplt and Procher Island are of a very high class, and show the immense possibilities of these districts within reach of Prince Rupert. The Indian exhibits form a department that is of special interest. Another interesting display Is one made from Atlin. This is a collection of vegetables, grown in gardens of the Columbia Mines Co., 3,800 feet above the sea and near 60 degrees latitude. At the opening yesterday, Alex. Prudhomme, President of the Fair Board, expressed his pleasure at participating In the opening of the third Exhibition. They had a district represented of 1,500 miles by 700 miles. With the fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc., it made them believe they were living In the best, and richest country on God's green earth. There were vast areas open to settlers to go in and raise just such products as were shown here. With the other resources in flsh, etc., the district was coming into its own. Mayor Newton said that lie was glad that the Exhibition had been held this year. As soon as the war passed, he felt that there would be a greal deal of attention attracted to this country. The Exhibition showed that there has been bcnellls denied from the Fair. The management had to curtail expenses and some special attractions were cut out. After all, such a show was to show the possibilities of the agricultural sections. On behalf of Ihe city of Prince Rupert he welcomed all visitors to the city. The children of the schools, undei the leadership of Prof. Harvey, sang God Save the King and Rule Britannia.
