GREECE'S iONGWILL JOINJEUTQXIC ALL IES GERMANS REPULSED ON THE SOMME FRONT Officials Of Victoria Liberal Association Are Up In Arms German Forces Attempt ISPANISH KING preparations (Grand Trunk Pacific IS VERY UfLASY: FOR BiG DRIVE| 0 , , Preparing ror Increasing Attack On Allied Lines And Are Repulsed London, Jan. 17.—The Germans attempted to attack the British lines at Gueudecourt, on the northern section of the Sonime front last night, but the British forces repulsed the attacking parties with losses before the Germans reached the Allied trenches. On the Ypres front and along the Comines Canal there has been heavy artillery fighting. The British trench mortare did much destructive work on the German front line trenches in the Ypres sector, while the Co- mines Canal has been damaged as a result ot the heavy British shelling. o Mr. C. Dickie of Vancouver, a prominent building contractor, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Clancy. ENTENTE ALLIES' REPLY TO PEACE PROPOSALS SUBMITTED London, Jan. 17.—The reply of the Entente Allies to the peace notes submitted by Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries has now been drawn up. Following the reply to President Wilson's enquiry regarding the possibility of procuring from the belligerents a statement of the basis upon which they would consider peace, the reply to the other neutral countries is limited to a brief and forceful acknowledgement of the receipt of the notes, the Allies having set forth their position fully in the answer to President Wilson. Dissmissal Of R. Renwick May Cause A Split In Liberal Ranks Victoria, Jan. 17.—The officials of the Liberal Association here are up in arms against the dismissal of Mr. Robert Renwick, Deputy Commissioner of Lands, and threaten to resign as a protest against what one ot the leading members of the party characterizes as a most cold-blooded outrage. It is understood that Mr. Renwick has refused to resign and it is also pretty generally understood that in this decision he has the support of not a few of Mr. Brewster's following In the capital. In order that there might be no misunderstanding in the mt Iter, one of the Liberal executive and a leader In the local party'flent a friend to Hon. Mr. Pattullo asking for particulars. The friend saw the Minister and returned unable to give any other reason for the attempt to get rid of Mr. Renwick other than that a job had to be made for Mr. Naden. As a result, a deputation waited on Hon. Mr. Mac- donald, the Attorney-General, on Friday afternoon and Informed him that the proposed dismissal 1:was aii outrage and an offence to all decency and that it was not proposed that the Liberals of Victoria would stand for such a cold-blooded piece of business" (to quote the speaker's own words). Mr. Renwick's dismissal is agitating not alone the ranks of the civil service. Local Liberals, who strongly support Premier Brewster's policy of no patronage and no dismissal of officials without proper cause, are commenting strongly on the matter and declare It t0 be the beginning of a "mainland raid" on the civil service offices. An attempt is being made to keep the whole affair quiet until Mr. Brewster returns from Ottawa. If the present line of action is persisted in, Liberals here say, Victoria, as well as Vancouver, will have a Liberal League. o EAGLES ATTENTION. Stockholm, Jan. 17.—At the opening of the Swedish Parliament yesterday. King Gustave, in his speech from the throne, appealed for greater national unity in view of the war conditions which prevail throughout' Europe. He announced the necessity of maintaining special preparations for the upkeep of land and sea forces which, up to the present, had not been considered necessary, but which, in view of the present situation, were now believed to be indispensable to Sweden. o MORE BOUNTY MONEY FOR DESTROYING WOLVES BELIEVED CONFERENCE IN LO.V DON YESTERDAY PORTENDS ANOTHER MOVE The Meeting Had Reference To New Plan Of Campaign For Military Matters Were Discussed. London, Jan. 17.—It is believed that the conference in London yesterday between Premier Lloyd George and his war cabinet and General Nfvelle, the French Commander- in-Chief, and General Sir Douglas Haig, the British commander on the western front, means that preparations are being made for a great new Entente offensive In France and Belgium. Information from un-offlcial sources indicates that the conference had reference to the new plan of campaign, and that military instead of diplomatic questions took precedence In the discussion. Another $10,000 Ts. Added To Fund Which Is Exhausted. Victoria, .Tan. 17.—Depredations by wolves and panthers, In the northern section of the Province and the Increased activity by fafmers In their onslaught upon the animals has resulted in a decided increase In the bounties paid by the Government. In consequence the appropriation passed last year has been exhausted. At the Executive Council meeting an additional $10,000 for bounty money was authorized. o PRINCE GEORGE HAD HOT MUNICIPAL ELECTION Mayor Perry Was Elected By A Close Majority Over Aid. Carney. PRESIDENT WILSON RECEIVED CONGRATULATIONS FROM THE POPE The electors in Prince George for the municipal council appears, from reports from there, to have been a very hot one this year. Mayor Perry, who won the seat over ex-Aid. Carney, had a close fight, winning by only 15 votes, but after what proved the most exciting election ever held in the place. One peculiar feature was, introduced. This was that of the pro-German vote. This was fought out, in he campaign, and it was urged against the Mayor elect that he catered for the German vote in that city, llthough lie is an Englishman himself and no reflections were cast upon his loyalty. While Mr. Perry was elected for Mayor, the supporters of his. opponent are in Ihe ascendant in the council. The aldermen elected were as follows: Ward 1, Messrs. Watson and Cliff; Ward '■'., Messrs. Armstrong and Haggen; Ward ?>. Messrs. Harper and Iirynildson. OPEN DAY ANB NIGHT First Class Service Everything New and Up-To- Dnte. Third Ave. Prince Rupert. There is slight artillery activity around Dlx- mude, while the big gun action is Intense in the vicinity of Hetsas. o J. H. Pillsbury returned to the city from the south yesterday. Travel By This Port That the Grand Trunk Pacific is alive to the fact that Prince Rupert is day by day becoming a centre of importance, and that tlie demands on the company are Increasing, is proven by the extensive preparations that are being made for the reception and accommodation of those who will be travelling by boat during the coming season. Reports of winter travel from the northwest are very encouraging this year. Already large numbers of people from the prairies are coming to the coast to escape from the severe- ness of the eatsern winter. The latest trains that have reached Prince Rupert have brought west large numbers of travelers, most of whom are from the three prairie provinces, and a number spend some time in ihe city. This year (he number of northwest people coming to Prince Rupert is far greater than it was last year. Therefore, the company has found ii necessary to increase its accommodation. During the past week a gang of carpenters have been busily engage* re-modelling the large building on the wharf at the end of Centre Street, and as a result the portion of the building at the boat landing already presents quite a modern appearance to the traveller. A portion of the building, about 50 feet by 50 feet on the corner facing the railway tracks Is being used for the purposes of making eommodieus waiting rooms, smoking room, steamship ticket offices, news stand, etc. (Continued on Page Four.) King Constantine Has Broken Faith With Entente Allies London, Jan. if.—General von Falkenhayn has arrived In Greece from the Transylvanian front, having made his way to Kavala, thence south by submarine. The arrival of this General leader in Greece is evidently the signal for the beginning of a hostile movement on the part of the Royalist troops. Royalist troops are now moving northwards from Athens, evidently with the Indention of joining the Bulgarians and the Turks, contrary t0 Constantine's iromise to the Entente ministers at Athens. King Consiantine lias now- violated the neutrality of Greece, in which neutral zone French and British detachments have been preserving peace between the Royalist and Venizelist troops. The new move indicates thai Greek plans for combined action with the Teutonic Allies against the Entente Powers have matured, and that he is to throw off the mask of neutrality. Will Dethrone King. Rome, Jan. 17.—It is stated here that the Entente Powers will depose King Constantine and that the throne will he given over to the Duke D'Aosta, a relative of the King of Italy.
