One of the latest reports to be received in the city, is to the effect that on a part of what is known as the Spaniard group of claims there has been a very rich strike made. It ls reported that three men who have a working option on a part of the claim were able to take out $1,- 000 In eight .hours a few days ago. Of these men, two are well known in this city. They are Messrs. Rochester and Macdonald. Details of the strike have not been received, but the men are working away on the property and do not believe that the end of the rich vein has been encottn- ' tered by any means. From the claims that are being worked by A. I.othgren, formerly of this place, the old Roundy property there comes also reports, of rich looking ore. Mr. Lothgren went south from here the other night with samples taken from the property In a new strike that had been made. He is to have it 'assayed. At the time of leaving he had little knowledge of what the ore was worth and would venture uo opinion. It was diff, i.t from what had been encountered in other parts of the workings. o DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE MAY RE GOVERNOR OF THC DOMINION London, June 2S.—It is announced that tlie Duke of Devonshire is to succeed H. NORTHLAND WAS WRECKED UP NORTH STEAMER THAT CARRIED ORE FROM HEltE MET TROUBLE IN NORTH The Vessel Can Be Salved Without Difficulty, It Is Expected. The steamer Northland, of the Border Line Transportation Company, which on the tenth of this month loaded a consignment of ore here for the Tacoma smelter, has been lost on the Alaskan coast, where she went with a cargo of cannery supplies after delivering her cargo of ore at Tacoma. Last Sunday, while off Kolte, a cannery port fifty miles to the west of Petersburg, she encountered some heavy weather which caused her to list and founder. There was no loss of life, and as she sank in shallow water the task of salving her will not he difficult. The Northland was a steel screw steamer, built by Moran Bros, at Seattle in 1908. She was 140 feet long with a beam of 27 feet. o Though the sky is not always blue, every cloud has a silver lining in Prince Rupert, July 1st.
