COAL NOTIOE Daily Edition. Friday. Dec 1 AFTER THE FIRE, WHAT? A nasty Are visited Prince Ruperl on Monday, it was nol serious enough to be in the calamity class, and, being Government property, the loss is Bpread over tin* whole Province. But it was nasty enough to show everybody what might easily be the fate of the whole of Prinoe Ruperl if a lire were to get out of hand some windy day. The lire came as a warning to the city that our water supply is of no use to tight a tire of any consequence. There is another danger that so far few have noticed. Had the tire happened during a period of hard and continuous frost or in a period Of drought, the city would have exhausted its supply of drinking water. Drinking water in our present condition is far too valuable to expend on quenching tires. if work cannot be rushed on the Acropolis Reservoir, then measures should be taken to instal a good pump on a float near tlie wharf and lay a system of lire mains in tlie business sectiou, to lu* supplied with salt water. Dawson lor a long time depended solely on such a system, even in winter tune when the Yukon was low, and a hole in the ice had to be made to feed the pump. Hy keeping a small head of steam always in the boiler, and with an ample supplx nl coal oil and eordwood for use the moment the alarm sounded, an emergency was always provided for. The possible result of a conflagration is important enough to warrant a meeting of business men and other citizens to take steps lo ensure that some adequate system of lire protection is installed at the earliest moment Skoona Lsnd Hi-.tn.-l Hii.in.-i ul Quean Charlott* Tsks nutlet, thst thirty days (rum dato. In fairness to the City Council and t othe City Clerk, and despite Alderman Newton's chivalrous efforts on our behalf al Wednesday night's Council meeting, The News fully understood thai the assessment schedules could be published singly if desired. We were under no misconception in the matter. We are not given to complaining about injustices done to ourselves, but the ground of complaint that The News has in regard to the assessment schedule advertising is that it was awarded to a dummy paper that had neither circulation nor existence. In the ca^e of one schedule The News' price was as low as The Journal, but the contract was awarded the Journal. The value of advertising, a> is well known, depends upon the extent of bona fide circulation. This is as true in advertising assessment schedules as in advertising clothing or real estate. On the other hand. The News was not looking for a square deal, so it is not undergoing any disappointment in the matter.
