Pki('.a Iive Cents MALL IEETIG FAVOR SIR WILFRID LAURIER WILL NOT ATTEND THE KING'S CORONATION "My First Duty is to the People of Canada/' he SaysWill Defeat the Conservative Policy of Obstruction by Staying at Ottawa and Fighting the Reciprocity Bill Through the House---His Place May be Taken by Sir Frederick Borden and Hon. Mr. Brodeur iSpeeial lo the Optimist) Ottawa. April 20. Sir Wilfrid Laurier will nol attend the Coronation ol King George or the Imperial Conference, unless ihe Opposition desist from their obstructive tactics and allow the work of Parliament to go on. This announcement was made by the Premier himself in the House last night. "My first duty is to ihe people of Canada," lu- said, "antl I inlend In slay here and pn-s- through the agreement." Borden Wanted to Know The incident arose when Hon. R. I.. Borden inquired what was the Premier's intention regarding "tin- approaching events in London." The answer was awaited with breathless interest byacrowd- til I louse. Sir Wilfrid briefly said thai his original intention had been to attend thc Coronation and the Imperial Conference in company with the other Colonial !' micro. With that object lull.ul booked a passage six weeks ago, but recent developments in ilu- House had altered his plaits. The Opposition had see-., lit to embark on a policy of oltst , cting thc work of the House. "First Duty to Canada" "The Government," he said, "has committed itself to put the question of reciprocal trade with the United Slates, to a vote of the House. They wen- determined to carry that intention into effect, and have the agreement ratified by the Hou.sc. If tin* Opposition persist in obstructing the work of Parliament in order to prevent tin- matter from coming to a vote, then my irsl duty to the people of Canada, is lo stay anil press the agreement through the House. That is my intention." Will Obstruction Continue? The announcement is ilu- lead- big topic of conversation in Parliamentary circles, and ii is looked upon as most likely that Sir Wilfritl will not go to England. It is fell thai lhe fight 'over lhe reciprocity agreement will be long and bit ter. The general feeling of tin- Opposition is that it is better t< defeat ilu- bill than have Sir Wilfritl attend the Corona tion. In the event of Sir Wilfritl Btaying at Ottawa, il is likely that bis place will be taken by Sir Frederick Borden and Hon. Mr. Brodeur. After the Limelight Washington, April -7. Another declaration that annexation is the tit-sired end in pushing reciprocity figured in today's debate. Representative Prince of Illinois, a Republican, attacking the Canadian reciprocity bill sounded the annexation note. He said Tail's speech at New York on Thursday furnished his text, lb- saitl that the pouring of Americans into tin- Canadian Northwest and the attitude of ilu- controlling forces in the Democratic parly mean nothing less than annexation, re- . iprocity anil partial free trade with Canada bring an initial step towards lhat end. Saturday, April 29 "A DANIEL COME TO JUDGMENT?" Not merely the "Friends of the Indians," but lovers of justice the Dominion over, will rejoice at the news that >ir W'ilirial Laurier and the Dominion Cabinet are considering means of bringing the claim of the British Columbian Indians to a tiile in liritish Columbia! lands before the courts, making the Government of British Columbia, a p.inv in the action. In this way, Sir Wilfrid Laurier hopes to bc able to secure just treatment for the British Columbian Indians. It is a strangely anomalous set of circumstances, when a Pn of Mri:i-h Columbia refuses to allow an appeal to justice for ihor-. of the inhabitants of the Province, and has :*i be dragged unwi into court by the Federal powers. It is a situation that probablv arises out of tiit- fact that the liuli.ui> have no votes. Hon. Lovers of justice must not forget that the Indians are not ask the government to acknowledge their claim u. a title in the lands they occupied at the time thev surrendered sovereign ownership. Lloyd-George with his little daughter Megan, now in the dayi illness his inseparable companion. if hit A victim of the worst form of neurasthenia, as well as a serious affection of the throat David Lloyd George, the greatest of the Liberal party's fighting men, has been recuperating on the continent this spring, but it is believed that he must soon reiire front Unpolitical arena. His Young Manhood Twenty years ago Mr. Lloyd George entered the British House of Commons. lie was then a mere flip of a boy; and more boyish in appearance than even in years. He was very thin in figure; so he was in the face; lhe freshness of the cheeks was thai of one who lived in the open air and not far from mountain and sea; and except for the always striking eyes; the face seemed to suggest none of the deeper passions and the tremendous force which were CO reveal themselves later in life. Even he himself had not yet realized himself. War Worn, Yet Humorous Today the marks of his arduous political experience are only too evident upon his face. Thc fresh young cheeks are now deeply lined; around the brilliant eyes there are crows-feet, which deepen whenever he laughs, and which form with their tell-tale record of Buffering an overwork and anxiety a strange contrast to the quizzical expression thai comes to the eyes in his frequent moments of merriment; and sometimes even thc alert figure with iis feverish hasle of movement, stems lo be less alert than it used lobe. Fearless in Politics Like most men, anil especially like most Celts, Lloyd George is two almost contradictory personalities. No man is so fearless; no man is so fearful. Put hint into a political light, and (here is no man whose face he fears; there is no battle whose ferocity cows or even dislrttbs him; the road to victory may lie along miles of darkness and obstacle; bill he never doubts for a moment thai hc will reach to the light and to the victory* This is what enabled him to pass through lhe cyclone of the Boer War with his life frequently in danger, his livelihood threatened; and Insult ami scorn surrounding him wherever he went. His Great Budget Similarly look at his conduct of ihe budget campaign; with the terrible odds at first against him; with work so hard and so long as would have broken down the strongest And yet wilh thai strange often unaccountable apprehensiveness. which is essentially Celtic, Lloyd George even in his moments of grandest courage for .1 principle, may be dreading some far off intangible evil or calamity especially to those he loves. The strange fact has been revealed more than once to those who know him and can glimpse into that high imagination and hall- wistful, half-melancholy side of even his robust ami fearless temperament. Strong in Sorrow Lloyd George possesses also to perfection that intense softness of naturethat instinctive readiness of sympathywhich is also Celtic. None would pause for more than a second to allude to that great sorrow of his life, which has made more of these deep lines in the lace and around the eyes than any oilier cause. Seldom indeed has he himself been known to refer to it, but once, very wistfully ihe great statesman said lo a friend: "'The unhappiest days of my life were the first few days after I had become Chancellor of the Exchequer." Story in His Face Lloyd George's face is the reflection of his inner nature and of his history. His early home wat. beautiful in ils unity and in the perfect unselfishness of a devoted mother and a devoted uncle; but constantly overshadowed by poverty and ti.e dreary and iron horizon thai stretches before the children of tin- refuted and educated but unprosperous household. Lloyd George has too courageous, strong, ami sanguine a nature not to have recovered from such untoward circumstances as surrounded his childhood, but these tilings leave some impress behind litem. The Real Lloyd George Such is the inner Lloyd George lhe real man; lender, affectionate, modest; fearless iii conflict, but in the Innermost recesses of his soul haunted by the Celt's brood- fancies antl anxious affections, and a great pity for the world's tragedies. The Strain of Work Lloyd George in not the only minister who is feeling ihe strain of lhe Strenuous work since 1900. Lord Crewe, lhe Liberal leader on ihe Upper House of Parliament, is gravely ill as a result of an utter breakdown culminating in a bad fall while in a lit which left him wilh concussion of the brain. Mr. Reginald McKenna, Secretary of lhe Navy, is jusl recovering from appendicitis. Lew MOORE LIGHT The bight thnt Rivals the Sun. Local business men recommend it. SEE THE OFFICIAL MAP Tha Brat glance will show you that ELLISON ia located nt Un- junction of tlu- Bkeena River ami Hit- Bulk- ley Valley. The Grand Trunk Pacific lias announced that they are joint owners in the townsite of Ellison. Now, my dear reader, yon muat remember that up to date the (annul Trunk Pacific has not announced that it has any interest in any other main line townsite in British Columbia. Does that start you thinking? STUDY THE MAP ami you will lind that Ellison ia where the railway tracks leave navigation. That fact 19 a very important one for conservative investors to think over. What is known as the Hazelton diatrict Coven a territory many miles in extent in every direction radiating frnrn the townsite of Kllison. Minim: machinery, ore shipments, smelters, reduction plants and all sorts of mining operations starting up in this rich mineral region, must necessarily have a metraipolis, u HUH, a headquarter*, If any sane, conservative man can figure out any other spot exca-pt Kllison for the huh of the great commerce aaf this district, his plan should he very interesting to the Grand Trunk l'acilic officials. It doa-s seem aa though these officiate, after several years of Investiga tion and engineering, would know just what they were lining when they put their official stamp on Ellison. STUDY THAT MAP-I desire to say to all parties who are talking townsites in the vicinity of Skeena River and Hulkley Valley that there will no doubt be several small towns, just the same as one always finds in a mining district. There will be towns in the vicinity of Ellison along branch railways, probably towns at the ends nf blanch lines made to serve the mines and the collieries, but it will be history repeating itself in regard to the building up of every metropolis. Ellison has every natural advantage, has every earmark of being the future mercantile and financial centre of the Skeena River mining distriet and the entrance to the Bulkley Valley. STUDY THAT MAP nnd you will find that all of Ihe mining towns and railroad towns around there juat beginning to be talked about will only be feeders to city and port of ELLISON. The Grand Trunk Pacific has put its official stamp on Kllison. Do you believe the company will do as much-for townsites owned by individuals as it will for one in which its stockholders are joint owners? If yon do, don't buy any lots ip Ellison. If you desire to make a permanent investment, or merely to make a little quick money, you must decide for yourself right now. Do you propose to follow the individual townsite promoters or the Brand Trunk Pacific Railway Company. STUDY THAT MAP-lf you desire to put your money into a real estate promoter's townsite you will have many, many opportunities this summer. The average promoter is full of hurrah and retl tin-. He must enthuse investors of tha- mail-order class with his wares. ELLISON is in the Missouri class. Tha-refaire, 1 am not telling any fairy tales about it. 1 am making statements that can be readily verified. STUDY THAT MAP.-If you want to join that great army of investors-at-long-raiige, then you shoultl put your money into promoters' townsites. If you want a perfectly safe antl sound inueslment, certain to bring you large prolits, tha-n put your money where the Grand Trunk l'acilic, after years of careful investigation, have put tlia-ir money. STUDY THAT MAP. lt is not likely the Grand Trunk Pacific will have nny other townsite in British Columbia for sale Ihis year. The officiate of the company state that lhe company is not Interested in any townsite in the Hazelton district except KLLISON. KLLISON is on the bank of the Skeena at its conlluenee with the Bulkley. You may change railway sur veys, you may change the location of towns, but you cannot change tin- geography of the country through which the rnilway passes. The head of navigation necessarily means an Important townsite. Ellison will not only be at the bead of navigation, but the centre of a mining diatrict wonderful in its resources that is now being opened up, and for which K'lisam will be the shipping point both by rail antl water. The fact that trains may change engines up or down the line or in the suburbs of the town of Ellison does not amount to shucks in building up a town when such places are compared with a town located where rails and navigation meet. STUDY THAT MAP. You will find on tbe official plan nf Ellison lhat a large part of tbe townsite lies been reserved for future sales, the same as the company has done with certain sections of Prince Rupert townsite. There are, therefore, at this time, comparatively few lots on the market. You must hurrv if vou want one. STUDY THAT MAP. ROGERS' ADDITION to Ellison, only a small parcel of land, lies within eight blinks of tlie site of the rnilway station. Lots in this are being offered. I am advising my clients to buy Rogers Addition lots at $l.ri(l for inside lots antl $^,ri0 for corners. Terms 111 per cent, discount for cash, or 10 per cent down and the balance on easy terms, no interest. JEREMIAH H. If women did not have a clear notion of what clothes really mean, I hate to think what men would look like nowadays. In the beginning nearly every youth tries to look his best for the sake of some member of the opposite sex. After he is married his tendency is to revert to type. It is a pretty hard struggle for some women to keep their husbands well dressed, even though money isn't the most serious factor. Don't get sloppy! Don't have your wife nagging you to get some decent clothes. You can't afford to. Bother ? It's no bother if you say to us "Here, you've got to dress me and keep me well dressed."
