for Positions.
Prince Rupert's city council have
engaged Williams & Manson as city
solicitors at a salary of $250 per month,
and a stenographer. The council held
another busy session last night and
disposed of several matters and adjourned
to meet again to-night to take up the
water question.
Those present were:- Mayor Stork,
Aid. Mclntyre, Mobley, Barrow, Pattullo, Hilditch,  Smith  and  Lynch.
Mr. Tattersfield was introduced to
the council as the city clerk who will
the position until a permanent
official can be secured.
The minutes of the last meeting were
adopted.
The following communications were
read:-
From Weston Coyney asking for
position as Stenographer.
From Smith & Merritt drawing attention to the large quantity of explosives
stored  near   their   place   of   business
at the corner of McBride and Third

Several liquor licenses were applied
'or but they were all referred to the
Board of License Commissioners, which
is the proper body to deal with them.
The applications for position of city
awk will be held until June 1st, in
accordance with the advertisement.

Aid. Mobley reported progress on

City Assessor.
Aid. Mobley drew attention to the
fact that Mr. Cuthbert was appointed
assessor by the government. When the
city became incorporated Mr. Cuthbert
no longer was in authority and the city
must either secure another man or sanction the work of Mr. Cuthbert.
Aid. Pattullo and the Mayor both
thought that the city should call for
applications for position of Assessor
the same as other   positions.
Aid. Hilditch moved that a special
committee of two look into the assessor's
books and see if it were feasible for a

Next Hundred Mile Section From
Prince Rupert to be Completed by
End of July.—New Steamers of
the Company.
Two more  stores  will   be   built on
Third Avenue.
Another new block will be erected on
Third avenue, and two more stores will
be ready in a short time for occupancy.
Messrs. Geo. Bennett, of Vancouver,
and David Turner, of San Francisco,
owners of considerable property here,
are in town and will leave for the south
this evening. They have decided to
build two stores on their property just
east of the Prince Rupert Hardware
and Supply Co. 's store on Third avenue.
The contract was let this morning.
Roller Rink Open.
The roller rink was formally opened
for skating last night when about 150
took a roll over the large surface which
is in good shape. A number of the new
beginners had the usual falls and the
spectators were afforded much amusement. Good music was furnished by a
band, and the season promises to be a
good one.
Preparing Report.
Aid. Mobley and Aid. Pattullo got
together this morning and prepared a
report for the Water and Fire Committee to present at to-night's meeting of
the Council.
Speaking at Winnipeg last week,
General Manager Chamberlain, of the
Grand Trunk Pacific, after an absence of
about four weeks, having visited Prince
Rupert, Vancouver, Victoria, Seattle and
Edmonton,  said:
"Track laying on the mountain division out of Prince Rupert has been
commenced and we expect to have 100
miles completed by the end of July,
which will take us to Copper river,
and we hope to have the track to Hazelton about November 1. Work on the
balance of the line to Alcermere is progressing rapidly. Our three steamers,
Prince Rupert, Prince George and Prince
Albert, are now on the way to the Pacific
Coast, coming around Cape Horn. The
Prince Rupert and Prince George are
intended to run between Seattle, Victoria, Vancouver and Prince Rupert and
the Prince Albert, which is a smaller
boat, will be placed in the Prince Rupert-
Queen   Charlotte   Islands   service.
The change that has taken place at
Prince Rupert since my last visit there
in August is most remarkable. All
classes of business are represented and
work has recently been commenced on
a large fish plant. It is claimed the
population is 5,000. Great activity prevails on the Pacific coast, and everything indicates prosperity. I see no
reason why these conditions should not
continue.
'We are making good progress with
ballasting on the line west of Edmonton. The piers of the McLeod River
bridge are now in, and the bridge erection will be commenced in a day or
two. We should get across this bridge
early in July, when the track will be

Moore's wharf at Skagway, which,
with its approach, is five-eights of a mile
in length, is to be repaired at an expense
of   $5,000.
ENGINEER IS APPOINTED
TO RECEIVE A SALARY OF FIVE

On account of so many of the members of the Rifle Club being associated
with the searching parties looking for
Messrs. Agnew and Tookey on Tuesday,
the intended shoot in the London Daily
Mail contest did not come off. Only two
or three of the boys were at the range.

BALL AT ESSINGTON.
Large  Party   From   Prince Rupert
Attends the Function.
For a number of years Essingtonians
have concluded their Empire Day celebration with a ball, and the one of this
year carried the festival well into the
next day and was a great success. The
gasoline launch Sooke left here early in
the morning for Big Falls, Skeena river,
taking a party of pleasure-seekers, who
later joined the Port Essington citizens
in the big dance at Cunningham Hall.
Among the party were Miss McPherson,
Mr. J. McLeod, Miss Kergin, Mr. M.
McLeod, Mrs. G. W. Morrow, Mr. J. B.
King, Mrs. J. Dean, Miss Rita Dean,
Mr. Cook, Mrs. D. Martin, Mr. McDonald and several others.
Roosevelt's Return.
Colonel Roosevelt may return to New
York on a battleship owing to hisi
ment as special representative of the
American government at the funeral of
King Edward. A monster reception is
being prepared for him in New York, the
whole of the available steamer fleet of the
port having been chartered to carry out
citizens to meet him.
Mr. A. Wheeler is leaving on the
steamer Rupert City this evening for
Vancouver.

Prince Rupert  Mining Association
Have Organized.
The Prince Rupert Mining Associa-
j tion met yesterday and elected their
officers and put through a lot of other
business preparatory to getting started.
The officers are : -
President—Major Geo. Gibson.
Vice-President—H. O. Butler.
Treasurer—M. P. McCaffery.
Secretary-S. S. Reid.
Managing Committee—P. J. Palmer,
Samuel Harrison and W. S. Benson.
There was also a committee appointed
to secure permanent quarters and to
make all arrangements for the opening j
of the exchange for business. One of
first things will be to arrange for a
daily wire to Stewart and Vancouver.

MINERS   AT ELLIS ARM.
BIG REAL ESTATE DEAL.
W. M. Davis, at present city engineer
of Berlin, Ont., was appointed the permanent engineer for Prince Rupert
at a salary of $5,000 per year. This
action was taken by the council at its
meeting last night upon the recommendation of the Streets committee. Mr.
Davis is one of the best municipal engineers in the Dominion and that is why
he was selected.
On behalf of the Streets, Works and
Property committee, Aid. Lynch reported to the council. The committee
purchased material and tools for repairs to the roads and have strarted
work.
Mr. Clements was recommended as
temporary engineer at a salary of $200
per month He is well qualified and
there are a number of things which
he must attend to at once, including
the levels of the water in Woodworth
Lake. They also recommended A. W.
1 Agnew as assistant.
In    connection    with   a    permanent
I engineer,   they   named   three   men   as
capable,  in   particular,   W.   M.   Davis,
I engineer  of  the  city  of  Berlin,  Ont.,
at a salary of $5,000 per annum.
The estimate for expenditure for the
| balance of the year was:—
City Hall, etc $11,000
Maintenance of streets $20,000
Recommended that the government
be asked to convey to the city a site
for a city hall. The report was adopted
as read.
Engineer     Appointed.
In    connection with    the report of
the Streets committee which recommend-
i d       Mr.    Davis   as   City    engineer,
! and   two  others   as   a  second   choice,
I a motion was passed by the Aldermen
appointing   Mr.   Davis   as   permanent
engineer for Prince Rupert at a salary
of $5,000 per annum.
Aid. Mclntyre thought the city should
jgo   slow   before   paying   big   salaries.
An engineer might   be secured just  as
Mining Engineer   Lost.
Port Arthur, May 26. -Capt. Roland,
one of the best known mining engineers
of Ontario, is lost in the woods. He is
80 years old and was with Roberts at
the relief of Lucknow.
Coal on Tubo Island.
Victoria, May 26.-A coal seam, said
to be eight feet thick, has been discovered on Tubo Island.
Camp   is   Very    Active    and    Men
From Stewart  are Going  In.
Word has reached the city from some
of the local parties who left two or
three weeks ago to prospect and to develop previously located claims in the
Ellis Arm district. Everyone up there
is very optimistic and that country
promise* to rival Stewart. Not only
did many local men go prospecting, but
a large number of those who went to
Stewart and who have been working in
that locality, are hitting the trails over
mountains for the new and more promising territory.
! John McGrath is now doing assessment work on his claims which were
recently bonded for a good figure, lie
has two of the most promising propositions in the district.
Jones and Strangland, two well
known men, have discovered and are
opening up some promising property.
There are now over 40 men at Ellis
Arm and their number is being added
to every day.
Logan and a party of prospectors
have gone in on the Naas looking for
mineral. It is reported that they had
no trouble with the Indians and that
the hostility of the natives is not nearly
so bad as one would be lead   to believe.

Aid. Smith suggested that the committee take up the matter of remuneration with Mr. Agnew and report at the
next meeting.
Aid. Mclntyre withdrew his motion
and Aid. Smith's suggestion was adopted.

English     Construction      Company
Seeking Site for Large^Works.

Vancouver, May 26. -Alexander Robertson, of the McAlpine-Robertson Construction Company of England, has
been here for several days looking for
a suitable site for large works, and has
as yet not succeeded in finding one available that is large enough and offers the
conveniences for -shipping the company
desires. He states thatflhis company
purposes bringing over a^machinery
plant that will em;.loy about five thousand men. He has visited jail the large
cities of the East that possess good
transportation facilities, and states that
he will visit Prince Rupert before coming to a decision. He will probably start
for the north next week.

Vancouver, May 25. —Charles Heaton,
found guilty on Friday of having assaulted Detective Mackenzie in Prince
Rupert, was sentenced to two years'

London, May 26—Twenty-two seamen
were drowned in the English Channel
yesterday by the collision of the Clyde
steamer Kerry Moore with the German
four-masted ship J. K. Vinnen. In the
fog the sailing ship rammed into the
steamer, tearing right through her
amidships. The Kerry Moore immediately sunk with all on board. The Vinnen was badly broken up about the
bows but managed to make the Fairway and was towed into* Portsmouth
harbor. Off Cowes on the Isle of
Wight one of the seamen of the Kerry
Moore was picked up. The officers of
the sailing vessel claim that she was on
her true course at the time of the collision and had the right of way.

Lofstedt Gets Seven Years.
Vancouver,   May 25.—Carl  E. Lofstedt,   of  Prince   Rupert,   whose  wife!
died from injuries inflicted by him, was j
found guilty of manslaughter and sent'
to the penitentiary for seven years.   He
appeared to be much relieved when the
interpreter told him the sentence.
Bicycle Racers   Poisoned.
T-remo, May 26. — Six Italian bicycle
racers are dying from poison said to
have been placed hi their food by a rival
in the lace across Italy. The men]
stricken were bunchedin thelead. The
racers just in the rear have been ar-;
rested on suspicion.

Manila, May 26. -The immense dock
Dewey, the largest drydock in the
world, sank last night in 70 feet of
water. A preliminary investigation
shows that it was from no fault of construction but because the valves had
■been left open through carelessness.
All the costly machinery of the huge
structure is said to have been ruined.
Whether the dock can be raised and
again floated is a great engineering
problem. Considering the enormous expense of towing the structure from the
construction yards in Philadelphia all
around the Hum, there is a probability
that raising it will be attempted.
Interview With  Laurier.
Ottawa, May 2>\ Charles M. Hays,
of the Canadian Pacific Railway, had an
interview with Sir Wilfrid Laurier yesterday. In the ci i rse of il he
stated that District "F," between
Winnipeg and Port Arthur, would be
open for traffic in August.
Rammed By a Steamer.

Cleveland, May2'i. The steamerFrau
Foodyear was last night rammed by the
steamer James Wood. A big hole was
made in her bows, and the water rushed
in in such a torrent that there was no
chance for escape. Eighteen of the
crew of the Goodyear perished, the remainder being picked up by the Wood.
Famous Treadwell Mine.
The Mining and Scientific Press gives
the following figures from Treadwell:
The report of Alaska Treadwell Gold
Mining company for March states that
the 240 mill ran 25 days, 16 hours and
crushed 27,101 tons of ore. Of this ooo
tons of concentrates, valued at $:i7,524,
was saved, and $59,414 in free gold. The
operating expenses amounted to $64,781
and construction $8,056. The yield per
ton of ore milled amounted to $3,
of ore milled amounted to $3.77. At
Alaska Mexican mine the report for the
same period gives the mill run 21 days
2 hours, ore crushed, 12,377 tons,
concentrates saved, 253 tons, valued at
al S17.7S4, base bullion, $1,940 and free
gold $22,512. The operating expenses. .
amounted to $26,482 and the yield per
ton of ore milled, $3.40.

The   Camosen  sails  for  Stewart  on

Father Bunoz returned from his trip
to Stewart and left this afternoon on the
Rupert City  for Vancouver.
The waters of the Skeena have risen
five feet eight inches during the last
twenty-four hours, and is reported to be
still rising.
The Cottage City brought nearly
twenty-five tons of perishables, principally vegetables and fruits, for this city,
and also had a good list of passengers.
The Rupert City brought in about
fifty passengers and among those who
left for Vancouver were: H. Rivet.

C. Buell, V. L. Knowlton, and P. Matz.
The City of Seattle got in this morn-
ing from the North with a few passengers
for this port and took out about a dozen.
She was delayed on her up trip soon after
leaving here by casting one of her blades
and was beached at Juneau to have anew
blade set. Otherwise she would have
been here a day earlier.
Telephone  Information.
At the suggestion of Aid. Hilditch,
a report of the progress being made by I
the telephone company will be prepared
and presented to the Council at an
early date. The idea of this is to give
the aldermen an opportunity to acquaint
themselves with the question before
they are asked to take over the telephone system.

Of Rails For Prince Rupert.
J. H. Rogers, local agent for Crow,
Rudolph & Co., of Liverpool, has received official notice that the steamer,
Belle of Scotland left Sydney, C. B. for
Prince Rupert on May 2nd and would
arrive here in from 70 to 90 days. The
Belle of Scotland has on board, 6,000
tons of steel rails for the G. T. P., to
be unloaded at Prince Rupert and from
1,800 to 2,000 tons of rails for McKenzie
& Mann's railway at Stewart. The
Belle of Scotland is a sister ship to the
Belle of Spain which brought a cargo of
rails here last Novermber. Mr. Rogers
will act as agent here and look after the
company's interests.

Frank Irish Wanted,
The Provincial Police Department,have
been asked to make enquiries for Frank
Irish,  of Southsea, Eng., who is .supposed to have arrived in this Province
some time early in 1909. Before coming
to British Columbia Frank Irish is said i
to have worked for a short time on a
government tugbout in San Francisco, !
and previous to that worked as a loco-
motive engineer on  one of  the  South j
American railways.    If anyone has any
knowledge  of the  above, Chief Wynn
will be pleased to hear of it.
W, A. S. Colter, president and managing director of the Prince Rupert
Savings and Trust Company, Ltd.,
came in on the Princess Beatrice and
is staying at the Grand Trunk Inn.
During the week he has made a thorough
canvas of the business men, including
the mayor and new aldermen, and is
enthusiastic in regard to the business
outlook.   Mr. Colter said this morning:
"My company was incorporated about
a year ago and while the head office will
be in Vancouver, we hope, as the name
implies, to do our principal business
here, and in the country tributary to
it. We have an authorized capital of
$300,000 and in addition have made
arrangements for a big trust fund to
work on in the shape of .loans and so
forth.
"We are prepared to open up in Prince
Rupert as soon as the necessary arrangements can be made, and from time to
time shall open up new branches at new
towns. We have men now at Fort George,
for instance, and I am going to take a look
at Stewart.     For the operation of our
main office in this city we shall have an
advisory board of six or seven of your
leading business men, who will control
affairs subject to the board of directors
in Vancouver.
"I am much impressed with Prince
Rupert and I think you have a good
hustling city council. In fact I find your
business men imbued with what you will
excuse me for calling a "Seattle spirit".
I am a Canadian, but obtained my financial training on the other side. I like
your newspaper, and especially its
title. Optimism and common sense
work wonders. I am confident my
company will do a large business here."
