Hyderabad, India, October 8Latest reports indicate that casualties resulting from the recent floods will number at least 50,000. Tom Flynn, of Aldermere was in town Thursday, H. Baker and A. Baker came in from the Bulkley Valley this week. Robert Dorman arrived in Hazelton Wednesday, on his way to Vancouver. Mrs.E. H. Hicks Beach and daughter have gohe, to Victoria for the winter. It is reported that a weekly newspaper is to be started at Port Essington shortly. The Steamer Hazelton had fifteen tons of merchandise for W. J. Larkworthy on her last tr JP- R. E. Loring, Indian Agent, went down to< Kitwangar. this week on busisegs connected with his office. The annual meeting of the Hazelton Progressive Association will be held in tne public school house on Tuesday October 13, at 7 o'clock p.m. The news has reached here that Dr. Quinlan is to be nominated by the Conservative party to oppose Wm. Sloan in the Comox-Atlin district. Captain Langley, formerly on lower Yukon, was on the Port Simpson on her last trip up tne river, investigating conditions in regard to putting a steamer on the Skeena next year. Rev. F. L. Stephenson arrived in Hazleton on the Port Simpson. If enough pupils can be enrolled, and it is thought the number is sufficient a public school is to be established in Bulkley Valley. Geo. Findly and Fred. Allen have gone from the Bulkley Valley to take part in the work of cutting the Copper River trail through. Four horses were sent down from Hazelton on the last boat for the same work Tom Carr was a passenger on the Hazelton down the river Tuesday morning. He will fint In the winter at Vancouver aiL other coast cities, returning in the spring. Meanwhile his affairs are being looked after by his brother Mark. It is reported that the Steamer Port Simpson had an accident while passing through the canyon at Kitselas on the down trip this week. In some way the .paddle wheel became disabled and the boat, helpless and with no steerage way drifted about five or six miles down the river before the crew were able to secure her to the bank. No injury to the hull is reported and it is thought to be one of those minor accidents [attendant upon navigation oh the river. The Steamer Port Simpson, after a short delay on account; of the accident fo her whee)^ was able to proceed down the river under her own power. Word has been received here of a subsidy being granted by the Dominion government for a continuation of. what is known as the Kitimat branch of the G. T. P. to the Bulkley Valley by th^e way. of Copper River.' The subsidy is said to amount to practically $750,000 and uie time limit is placed at two years.. This pk;ce of road will afford access to tne coal and timber of the Copper River as well as the copper deposits of the. mountains at the head of Telkwa River. In addition it will give a line shorter by about sixty mi^es than the majn line by way of Hazelton. Several days a^o a body was. found floating in the Skeena, near Graveyard Point, by some Indians. The remains were taken ashore and left on the bank: of the river after the authorities han been notified by wire,. Although two boats have come np the river jjince the authorities at Prince Rupert were notified nothing was done towards giving the body a burial, nor any attempt made to identify the rn,a.n. It is understood that the recent rise in the river, has again, set,, the body afloat. From the description it is possible that the corpse was that of one of the ill-fated crew of the "Mount Royal" which turned turtle in the canyon last fall and caused the death of six of her crew. Whatever body it was and whatever the circumstances' the least that should have been done by the authorities at the coast was to have seen that the body was properly.buried. In the telegraphic despatches it is announced that-tenders will be asked for the construction of an additional hundred miles of the G. T. P. from the end of the work now going on. This is in accordance with expectations and it is known that every effort is being made .to complete th? surveys as soon as possible with that end in view. Although no actual construction work can be undertaken this winter, owing to the fact that navigation Is about to close on the Skeena, there is a great amount of preparatory work to be done before spring and which will take at least six months after the contract is let. More steamers must be built for one thing as the two boats in use at present have all they can do ahd more, to keep the camps on the lower river supplied. . With the contract let the preparatory work can be done during the vinter and with the opening of navigation next spring men and supplies can be placed along the river I; nd the work be in full swing by tr.e middle of summer. The statement has been made by competent authority that on account of the lighter work on the upper river, the grade between Kitselas and Hazelton would be completed as soon as the first hundred miles, allowing the work at the lower ' end to have one year's start.. If Foley, Welch and Stewart get the contract for the.' second hundred miles, navigation through the canyon at Kitselas Will be done away with at that point. The accomplishment of this Would be a great help to navigation as it Would allow almost uninterrupted service along the river during high Water. About twenty-five men came out from the Ingenica the first of the week and at the same time Frank Johnson arrived with Jack Graham's pack train' They report some snow on the divides. The result of the season's work shows that there is gold on McConnell Creek and down the Ingenica for an, indefinite distance, but no gold has been found on the Ingenica above the mouth of McConnell Creek. Bed rock was not reached on McConnell' Creek and all the gold brought out from there was obtained from the surface gravel. On Ingenica bed rock was reached in two different places and the gold w^xs in the gravel all the way down. From evidences obtained, the appearance of the gold ect., the miners pelieve there has been two runs of gold and that it all came down from McConnell. None of the men would make a statement of what gold they had but it is learned from good authority that there were some pretty fair pokes among the crowd. This was in most cases obtained from claims located in the spring of this year by men who went from Hazelton and who did not have two months of actual working time. On McConnell Creek the claim owners joined forces in the endeavor to get to bed rock and the Jensen shaft was down about eighty feet when the party left. A streak of sand had jnst been encountered in the bottom and from that and other indications it was expected that bed rock would be met in a few feet. R. L. Gale, of Aldermere was a visitor in Hazelton for. a day the first of the week. (Goldwin Smith in Weekly Sun.) Mr. Kier Hardie might do us a good service bp giving a frank and clear expression of the aims of the Socialist party, and of the means by which those aims are to be attended. At an election in this city not long ago a Socialist manifesto was put forth. It glowed with class hatred. That to which it evidently pointed was war of classes, with confiscation of the property of the rich. Taken seriously, it might have been a warning to all owners of property to arm in their own defence. We do n >t accuse Mr. Keir Hardie of sharing this spirit, but he evidently aims at great proprietary and political revolution. Let him tell us clearly how the revolution is to be brought about, and in whal institutions, social and political, it is expected to result. Nothing could be more philanthropic than the language of the French Jac- obine at the beginning of a career which ended in the Terror. Their example is a warning to those who hold the same language now that instead of accomplishing their ends by philanthropic oratory or election ballots, they may have to wade to it through blood. Protection is no new idea. In Queen Anne's lime judges were compelled to sit on seats stuffed with wool and the dead were buried in woolen shrouds in order that the wool trade might prosper. Now, however, the question is not whether the farmer should get much or little for his wool. The question is whether manufacturers arid stock holders may grow prosperous in the manufacturing of woolen and cotton goods. Let us buy our woolen or cotton goods from England, or the Southern States ' if necessary. Canada is a young country and can afford not to be so selfish as to commercialize systematically the labor of the weak. Canada, with her three million square miles and seven million people does not need as yet to make a practice of working her whole population for all they can endure. As much as possible factory labor should be confined to men. In the times of Queen Anne the woolen trade was largely the, * work of men and supported the - % heads of the households. We are ' strongly against giving protection to industries in which women are largely employed. Let us buy', if necessary, our stuff from abroad, or protect the woolen ahd cotton trades on the distinct understanding that only men shall be employed in the factories. At present women and children go to the mills and looms to labor while men, out of work, wander as tramps over the face of the land. Ex. On Thursday the ladies of Hazelton met at the Mission House, by invitation pf Mrs. Field, to inaugurate a branch of the Ladies Aid in conection with the Church of England. This, as a "news item", may not appear of much consequence to the average male reader, but if it is carried out wisely, as we feel sure it will be, it may mean a great deal to all the men not only of Hazelton but also in the surrounding country. As we irnderstanu it this Society,s, or Guild, s, object is to diverse means to help the finances of the church, using their own judgment as to the best means by which to accomplish their object. While we wish the ladies every success in their most laudable object, and feel sure their efforts will be appreciated, we trust that as spokesman for the general public they will pardon a few suggestions as to some of the lines that might be followed with great success and which We feel sure would be appreciated and patronized by the men at large. Buy good material and make some comfortable working shirts, knit some good warm mitts and make some "carry-alls,, to hold needles, thread, buttons ect. We were going to suggest mending clothes and darning socks, but think perhaps we had better not, but whatever the ladies do, or make they can be assured that if they cater to the miner and prospector they will find ready sale for their wares at good prices. With those few suggestions we also offer them our most heart felt good wishes in their work and hope they will have every success. -Contributed. Hrald Job printing is the bet.
