HAZELTON, B. G, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17,
LOSES LIFE ON
THE TRAIL
LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS.
ANDIMAUL OPERATOR
SUCCUMBS TO EXPOSURE
Eugene Snodgrass' Lifeless Body
Found Within Short Distance
From His Home
Eugene Snodgrass, operator on
the Hazelton - Prince Rupert
branch of the Yukon telegraph
line at Andimaul, twenty miles
down the river, died on the trail
this week while covering his beat
toward Hazelton. After leaving
his station on Monday morning
he never was seen again alive so
far as known. When he did not
return on time Tuesday, Everly,
from the office below Andimaul,
and Graef, of the Hazelton office,
who was out on the line looking
for breaks, were notified the first
time they reported, which was
Wednesdap toward evening. Friday noon it was reported over
the wire that Snodgrass' body
had been found about a quarter
of a mile from the river and one
mile from Andimaul. It is thought
death occurred from exhaustion
and exposure. Deputy Coroner
Stephenson and a doctor left for
the scene this morning. Searching parties were out from the
camps near Andimaul and from
Hazelton, the latter party of four
men sent out by the lodge of
Eagles of which deceased was a
member, consisted of T. Hankin,
J. Blume, D. Ogilvie and E.
Sweeney.
Only the most meagre details
have been reported to the Hazelton office. Operator Graef found
the body. Deceased had been at
Andimaul since October 10. being
at Kitselas and Hazelton pre
viously. He leaves a young wife
to mourn his loss.
LaterThe deputy coroner
has telegraphed to have the body
brought to Hazelton where the
inquest will be held.
JERRY COLE PASSES AWAY
J. D. Cole died at the hospital
last night after a short illness.
Cancer of the stomach was the
cause. He had been in the district for the last three years, having a farm about six miles south
of town near the Skeena and
some claims in the hills. Last
summer he was foreman of the
road gang in the south end of
Bulkley valley. He was about
sixty years of age.
Wreck On Alaskan Coast
Cordova, Alaska, Dec. 16th:
The steamer Olympia is pounding
to pieces on the rocks of Bligh
island. One hundred and six
passengers were on board but
were transferred to other steamers which went to the rescue,
The Olympia sailed from Cordova
Saturday evening carrying a
number of passengers from the
wrecked steamer Northwestern
which went aground at False Bay
Dec. 2. A wireless call for aid
was picked up at the naval wireless station.
B. M. Rogers of Bulkley valley,
is a visitor in Hazelton.
The first mail to the new post-
office at Kispiox was despatched
on Tuesday.
R. S. Sargent, accompanied by
Hugh McLain, left on Monday
for Prince Rupert.
The new bridge over the
Skeena, just above Hazelton, will
be open for traffic tomorrow.
H. Silver! hjrne of Pleasant
valley, spent a couple of days in
town this week, returning home
on Tuesday with supplies.
W. S. and D. A. Harris left on
Tuesday for the coast. They
will spend the holidays at their
home in Vancouver, returning
after New Years.
James Latham of Francois lake,
who is interested in several mineral prospects near Hazeltdn,
came in on Sunday. He will
spend the winter in town.
Charles Black has rented from
Slinger & Ayerde the room formerly occupied by the Pioneer
Restaurant, J. Pask, proprietor,
and has opened the Overland
Restaurant, to be conducted as a
first class eating house.
Hugh Grant of Victoria, who
arrived from the coast Tuesday,
on a business trip, is under medical care, as the result of a slight
paralytic shock affecting his
right side. He will probably be
about again in a fortnight.
A dozen men are at work at
the Interior Lumber Company's
sawmill three miles frem town.
Manager G M. MacKenzie reports having quite a number of
logs cut, and hopes to have
installation completed and the
big saw running in a day or two.
A. Baker, who was engaged
last summer on the BX steamer
on the Fraser, arrived on Tuesday
night, via the telegraph trail,
and left on Thursday for Vancouver, where he will spend the
holidays with his family. Mr.
Baker reports good times in Quesnel, where mineral discoveries
are attracting attention, and in
Fort George where considerable
building is being done. The latter
place has a population of four
hundred. Another boat is being
built for service on the upper
Fraser.
BURIED IN SNOW
ON NINE MILE
TWELVE PAGES
SILVER CUP SUPERINTENDENT
SWEPT TO DEATH BY SLIDE
J. R. Verschoyle Carried Down The
Mountain And Body Recovered
After Diligent Search
THE POLICE CALENDAR
J. Blanchard Bell, who claimed
to be a lawyer, but whose actions
were not calculated to shed lustre
on the legal profession, appeared
on a charge of vagrancy, and was
allowed forty-eight hours to leave
town.
As the result of an orgy in
which most of the Kispiox Indians participated, Patrick Cas-
sidy appeared in the police court
on a charge of supplying liquor
to natives. He was sentenced to
four months imprisonment, in
default of paying a fine of $300
and costs. The liquor which
caused the trouble was obtained
.by breaking into the Ingineca
hotel warehouse and stealing
two cases of brandy. The police
hope to obtain evidence sufficient
to convict the thieves, who have
not yet appeared on that charge.
J. R. Verschole, superintendent
of the Silver cup mine on Nine
Mile mountain was caught by a
snowslide on Monday and on Friday evening the rescuing party
brought the body to Hazelton
to be interred.
The accident happened sometime after the miners had returned to work after dinner and
it was not until supper time that
the absence of the superintendent was noted. The men immediately recalled that the missing man had expressed an
intention of improving the trail
from the cabins to the number 3
tunnel where it crossed the path
of a narrow but very steep slide
track. As soon as possible a call
was sent to the Sunrise camp and
also the Lead King and all of the
force at those properties responded. While searching the
slide which extends down the
basin for a half mile below where
Verschoyle was caught his cap
was discovered, and all possibility
of doubt was removed as to his
being buried.
Slides are not uncommon on
Nine Mile at certain seasons but
are most frequent in the spring.
While it was raining heavily on
Sunday and Monday in town two
feet or more of soft, wet snow
had fallen on the mountain and
slides occurred in many places.
Mr. Verschoyle was about
forty years of age and had been
mining since boyhood. Before
coming north he spent five or six
years in Slocan district and was
also for a time in the Lardeau.
He first came to Hazelton in the
.'spring of 1908 at the time of the
! rush into the Ingineca country,
going to the placer diggings with
| one of the first parties that made
the trip. Having formed a mining partnership with F. Treanor,
for that summer and upon the
staking of the Silver Cup group
by Treanor and Harris became
an owner of a one-fourth interest. He sold out in October,
1909, and his interest passed to
the men who formed the present
company.
At the time of his death he
was possessed of several valuable
claims which promised to make
him wealthy in a short time.
Personally popular, the news of
his death was a shock to his many
I friends in the district. This is
the first fatality in the mining
', industry in Hazelton camp.
Ottawa, Dec. IWThe House
rejected by a straight party vote
the proposal submitted by the
opposition for the establishment
of abattoirs and a more effective
system for cold storage under
government supervision.
Ames, who visited Australia as
delegate to the Congress of
Chambers of Commerce of the
Empire, has given notice that he
will move in the House a resolution favoring preferential trade
relations with the Commonwealth
on a reciprocal basis.
From an official source it is
learned that the G. T. P. will
make an effort to maintain a semi-
I weekly accommodation service on
the first section of the road, from
Prince Rupert to Copper River.
! The absence of snowsheds is
likely to give considerable trouble
' during the winter; but it is hoped
a fairly regular train service will
I be given.

Little Change In Political
Situation
Driven to Self Destruction
St. Petersburg, Dec. 15:Six
prisoners hurled themselves from
the prison walls to death rather
than submit to the inhuman
treatment of the officials in
charge of them. Sasonoff, the
assassin of Minister of the Interior Von Plehve was one of the
six.
Ballinger OutTawney In
Washington, Dec. 15:It is reported that Representative Tawney of Minnesota will succeed
Ballinger as Secretary of the
Interior. The latter desires to
retire to private life now that the
investigating committee has decided that he was guiltless of the
charges made against him.
Nova Scotia Girl Acquitted
Cambridge, Mass., Dec. 15:
Hattie Leblanc was acquitted of
the murder of Clarence Glover.
The verdict was received with
wild cheering. It was the most
sensational trial that ever occurred in this section. Glover,
who was wealthy, took the girl
from her home in Nova Scotia to
educate. She is now seventeen
years old. The man's dying
words were: "Hattie shot me."
Would Nationalize Elevators
Winnipeg, Man., Dec. 15:
Over a thousand farmers left today on five special trains for
Ottawa to urge the government
to take over the terminal elevators at the head of the lakes;
also those located at Montreal
and to be built at Hudson Bay.
Ottawa, Dec. 16:Nearly two
thousand farmers from Ontario,
the Maritime and Western provinces arrived yesterday as delegates to the first National
Council of Agriculture which
meets today. A formal statement will be submitted to parliament. The western delegates
demand reciprocity with the
United States, and the abolition
of duty on articles which farmers
require. They demand free
trade in agricultural implements,
lumber, cement, hardware, woolens and sugar in addition to
government ownership of terminal elevators. They also want
the government to establish a
chilled meat industry for the
west similar to that in Australia
and New Zealand.
Poisoned At Supper
Vancouver, Dec. 15: After
partaking of a light supper consisting of hard boiled eggs and
beer, George Black, a tea merchant, died of poisoning. Miss
Birdie Gordon, stenographer, and
Wm. Wolton are in a serious
condition. The police are investigating for a motive of the
poisoning as the beer found in
house was harmless.
Forty-five Bodies Recovered
Fernie, B. G, Dec. 15-The
last of forty-five bodies has been
recovered from the mineatBelle-
vue. Alberta. The dead include
ten members of a rescue party
from Hosmer and Frank who
went into the mine early last
Saturday morning and were
entombed by a cave-in. Several
of the injured will die.
London, Dec. 14: Speaking
Monday Lloyd-George said: "We
hope to introduce a home rule
bill at the first available moment.
We have no intention of shirking
home rule. It is absolutely essential for the efficiency of the
Imperial parliament. Wales,
Scotland and England, as well, as
Ireland, want self government.
We are treading on each others'
toes in Parliament and not doing
any work because the Imperial
Parliament looks after matters
which are beneath the attention
of county councils. Answering
other questions he said: "If the
Liberals had an adequate majority the Lords question would be
settled once for all."
Asquith was elected in Fife
East but by a reduced majority.
After a silence of several days
and following pointed references
to a reckoning to come, "The
Morning Post" the tariff reformers' organ, bitterly attacks Balfour for what some call his
treachery to the cause of protection.
London, Dec. 16: Latest returns give the government coalition 353 seats and Unionists 257,
standing as follows by parties:
Liberals 240, Labor 40, Nationalists 64, Independent Nationalists
9. The majority of Liberals and
Labor members combined over
the Unionists is 23.
Local Option Defeated in Rupert
Prince Rupert, Dec. 15:Balloting on the Scott Act yesterday resulted in the defeat of
local option by a vote of 272 to
169.
Laurier Side-Steps
London, Dec. 15th: Laurier
cabled to Ian Malcolm, Unionist
M. P., who inquired whether the
Premier thought he was subscribing to a separation scheme or
federation when he contributed
to home rule campaign funds.
The Premier in replying cables:
"Do not like say anything which
would seem like interference,
either for or against idea. Notice
my name being used that way,
but express my strong desire
that it should be kept out of the
contest." p

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1910
Will Open Rich Country
The coal basin on the headwaters of Skeena river, near Groundhog mountain, is attracting more
and more attention and the high
quality of the coal as a domestic
fuel, the number and thickness
of the seams and the great extent
of the country containing the
measures, all combine to render
very plausible the reports that a
railway is likely to be built in
the near future, to give an outlet
to this anthracite to tidewater.
Practical men of wide experience
have stated that the Groundhog
mountain coal area is one of the
largest on the continent and the
coal is second only to Pennsylvania anthracite in quality. '
There are other attractions besides coal. The country is said
to be rather open and rolling,
with much good land that can be
brought under cultivation. Garden patches were planted by the
miners working on coal claims
last summer and potatoes and
other vegetables grew well, no
frosts occurring.
The great mineral belt in which
the Hazelton camp is situated
extends north an unknown distance. It is proven for fifty miles
and indicated, by samples of ore
brought in from time to time by
Indians, to reach as far as Bear
lake, 200 miles from here but not
in close proximity to the coal
fields. A large part of this mineralized area must be traversed
by any railway built to the coal.
Whatever route is chosen for
the railway Hazelton will be the
outfitting point for the small army of settlers and prospectors
that will flock in once the project
is assured. For the territory
along the Skeena Hazelton will
be the nearest supply point, with
an existing trail which is being
improved yearly. The route will
likely be found to approach within 80 miles of here. The wagon
road through Kispiox valley, with
bridges across Skeena and Kispiox rivers, is now completed for
twenty miles. Next year will
see it extended another fifteen
miles or so as far as the appropriation to be made this winter will
do the work. From the point
where the Yukon Telegraph is
left to the coalfields the trail will
be improved next summer, although passable as it is.
While people located along the
line of the G.T.P. are and will
be, fully occupied in opening up
the rich, undeveloped country
about them, the construction of
another railway to the north
would attract great numbers of
new people.

W. A. SALE OF WORK
' On Thursday evening the
Woman's Auxiliary of St. Peter's
church held a sale of work and
concert in the Mission school-
house, and scored the greatest
success in the history of that
useful organization. The room,
which was tastefully decorated,
was crowded during the evening
by an assemblage which thoroughly enjoyed the many
features of the affair. Many
useful and ornamental articles,
made by the ladies of the Auxiliary, were offered for sale. Good
prices were realized, and not a
single article was left at the
conclusion of the evening.
Tasty refreshments and confectionery were served to visitors,
a handsome sum being realized
by the ladies in charge of these
departments.
The sale of work was under the
direction of Mrs. Field, assisted
by Mrs. Leslie, Mrs. Hicks Beach,
Mrs. Slinger, Miss Moore, Miss
Soal and Miss Sharpe. The
candy stall was presided over by
Mrs. DeVoin, Mrs. Stillings, and
Mrs. Homer. Refreshments
were served by Mrs. Sealy, Mrs.
Maitland-Dougall, Mrs. Heme,
Mrs. Harvey, Miss Keynton,
Miss Morison, Miss Wrathall.
The grab bag was in charge of
Miss Broughton. C. F. Morison
made an efficient chairman.
Miss Sharpe gave every satisfaction as pianist.
During the evening the following ladies and gentlemen took
part in a concert program which
proved most enjoyable: Mrs.
Hicks Beach, Miss Sharpe, Miss
Vera Lee, J. H. Hetherington
and H. Dorrien-Miller.
D. Marr succeeded in guessing
the weight of the prize cake.
J. W. Morison and J. W. McPhee
drew sofa cushions, the latter
also winning a ladies shawl.
The very satisfactrry total of
$520 was realized. The sum will
be used as the nucleus of a fund
for the erection of a new church
when conditions render it necessary.
The president of the Auxiliary
tenders her heartfelt thanks to
the many ladies and gentlemen,
who by their services, gifts, and
money so generously contributed
towards the success of the sale.

For Many Reasons We
Recommend
Silver Cup Mines
FOR MANY REASONS we recommend the immediate purchase of
Silver Cup shares at the present offering of 121-2 cents per share.
FIRST AND FOREMOST, We believe the
stock will steadily advance on the true
merit of the property. We believe in
the management of this company.
That the safety of the investors' money
is absolutely assuredwe believe furthermore that there is great value in
the property holdings far and above the
present selling price of the stock.
It is with all these facts in mind that
we recommend investment in the "Silver Cup Mines." Believing that the
conditions surrounding this enterprise,
consisting of a big mining property
systematically developed, the management by reliable business men, assuring
a clean business administration, offers
an opportunity for extraordinary profits
to everyone who wishes to share in the
profits derived from a succesful and
energetic development of a big mining
property.
Looking months ahead we venture
the opinion that SILVER CUP will
sell for many times the present price of
shares. Our predictions are based upon
sound estimates of what may reasonably
be expected from a liberal development
of the Silver Cup ore bodies.
The treasury fund is fast growing
into proportions that will enable the
company to proceed on a scale that is
calculated to add great value to the
shares, after this issue is deposed of
and as development proceeds there will
be a lot of people wanting Silver Cup
stock, and to secure it they will be
obliged to offer a sufficient profit to the
early purchaser to induce him to sell.
Why not be one of the early purchasers
and thereby secure the stock at a price
that will give you the maximun of
profit.
We have only a limited allotment of
shares that we can sell at the special
price of 121-2 cents per share. To
those interested we suggest immediate
action before the issue is fully subscribed.
Terms of purchase on application.

DISTRIBUTION
OF SEED GRAIN
ANDPOTATOES
By instruction of the Hon.
Minister of Agriculture a distribution is being made this season of samples of superior sorts
of grain and potatoes to Canadian
farmers for the improvement of
seed. The stock for distribution
has been secured mainly from
the Experimental Farms at Indian Head, Sask., Brandon,
Man., and Ottawa, Ont. The
samples consist of oats, spring
wheat, barley, field peas, Indian
corn (for ensilage only), and
potatoes. The quantity of oats
sent is 4 lbs., and of wheat or
barley 5 lbs., sufficient in each
case to sow one-twentieth of an
acre. The samples of Indian
corn, peas and potatoes weigh 3
pounds each. A quantity of each
of the following varieties has
been secured for this distribution:
Oats. Banner, Abundance,
Danish Island, Wide - Awake,
Thousand Dollar, Improved Li-
gowoall white varieties.
Wheat.Red varieties: Marquis and Early Red Fife (early
beardless sorts of high baking
strength,) Red Fife (beardless,)
Preston, and Huron (early,
bearded.) White varieties:
White Fife (beardless,) Bobs
(early, beardless.)
Barley. Six-rowed: Men-
sury and Manchurian (a selection
from Mensury.) Two-rowed:
Standwell and Invincible.
Field Peas. Arthur and
Golden Vine.
Indian Corn, (for ensilage.) -
Early sorts: Angel of Midnight,
Compton's Early and Longfellow.
Later varieties: Selected Learning, Early Mastodon, and White
Cape Yellow Dent.
Potatoes. Early varieties:
Rochester Rose, and Irish Cobbler. Medium to late varieties:
Gold Coin, Carman No. 1, and
Money Maker. The later varieties are, as a rule, more productive than the earlier kinds.
Only one sample can be sent to
each applicant, hence if an individual receives a sample of oats
he cannot also receive one of
wheat, barley, peas, Indian corn
or potatoes. Applications on
printed cards or sheets, or lists
of names from one individual, or
applications for more than one
sample for one household, cannot be entertained. The samples
will be sent free of charge
through the mail.
Applications should be addressed to the Dominion Cerealist,
Experimental Farm, Ottawa, and
may be sent in any time from the
1st of December to the 15th of
February, after which the lists
will be closed, so that the samples asked for may be sent out
in good time. Applicants should
mention the variety they prefer,
with a second sort as an alternative. Applications will be
filled in the order in which they
are received, so long as the supply of seed lasts. Farmers are
advised to apply early to avoid
possible disappointment. Those
applying for Indian corn or potatoes should bear in mind that
the corn is not usually distributed
until April, and that potatoes
cannot be mailed until danger
from frost in transit is over. No'
postage is required on mail matter addressed to the Experimental
Farm, Ottawa.

Director of Experimental Farms.

DRUGGIST
That the people of Hazelton
are public spirited was shown
beyond doubt on Saturday evening, when, at a meeting called to
decide the question of building a
public hall, the sum of $2000 was
pledged.
The meeting was held in the
courthouse and was attended by
many representative citizens.
The questions of cost and location
were discussed at length and it
was decided, the matter of
finances being satisfactorily arranged, to proceed at once with
the erection of a hall of sufficient
size for dances and public assemblies of every kind. The
contract, which was awarded to
Stephenson & Crum, provides for
the immediate construction of a
hall 30 x 72 feet. The site chosen
is on the Hudson's Bay Co's.
property, a central lot being
leased at a low rental for a
number of years.
The meeting, which proved
quite enthusiastic, was presided
over by L. L. DeVoin, with J.
W. Davis as secretary. Subscribers were organized as the
Hazelton Hall Association, with
the following officers: Trustees,
J. C. Boyd, C. F. Morison, J. E.
Kirby; Executive Committee,
H. H. Little, W. J. Larkworthy,
R. S. Sargent, J. A. Macdonald,
L. L. DeVoin, E. H. Hicks Beach,
W. J. McAfee. L. L. DeVoin
was chosen chairman of the Association, with W. Allison and
C. F. Morison as vice-chairmen.
Work on the foundation of the
hall was begun on Monday and
every effort will be made to complete the building before the
New Year. It is the intention
of the committee to celebrate the
opening of the building by giving
an elaborate dance.
The down river mail left early
on Thursday morning in order
that the party, which will bring
the Christmas mail, may reach
Hazelton the day before the holiday.
People going to Francois Lake
and the Morice river will find a
nice assorted stock at Silverthorne's.
