Prof. McBride is an authority on h> re '.ity, and he feels t.-.at a new epoch in plant life is about to transform farming conditions throughout the wheat-growing world, and that it will prove that the bard wheat of Canada is not due to climatic conditions, but to the nature of the seed itself. As is well known, the Canadian wheat, while of a smaller head, is su- pe'rieer in ihe wheat grown in England b.v reason of its hard quality, making flour that produces light bread, wUile the English wheat lacks that Tiard quality essential to good wheat. The agricultural department at Cam-, bridge university is endeavoring to un-; iie' the best qualities of the' two Wills of wheat, so that with a larger head, the yield per acre would be 10u per cenl greater. Prof. McBrlde says hair! an acre of this high-bred wheat is growing in England, and he maintains that the hardness of Manitoba wTie a; is simply a matter of heredity ami not due to climate, anil that by crossing with the English variety, a new anl better wheat can be evolved. The experiments, which have been going ou for the last two years in England, are now, Prof. McBride declares, about lo be brought to the last stages of perfection. What is troubling them over there is to a hardness In the wheat kernels, bul Prof, McBride says it is just as easy to acquire a: the. same time in the larger head. Very Careless Burial. Ottawa.
