Lately there was an occasion to say something aboul the' misconduct of children In trespassing upon and do- ing malicious damage to the property of their neighbors. Fortunately there has been comparatively little ground for serious complaint In this direction here in Xew Westminster, but l-hat there is room for Improvemenl will not be denied. Ii is rather a surprise t" find from an article in one of the Toronto papers thai the doings of the children in that, city have caused great annoyance, and that the conduct ot Toronto chii,Iren is lie.I I to be in very unfavorable contrast with that of children in American cities. It is pointed out that long before it was common to find fron! lawns and boulevards unfenced in Toronto, "the Canadian visitor to American cities was gladdened by the sight of grass and flowers left safely to the tender mercies of children who showed no disposition to abuse the confidence reposed in them by the owners of these beautiful spots. .Much the same remark applies to the' treatment of birds anil the smaller quadrupeds thai are usually found only in the forest. Squirrels are as common as birds in some American cities, and quite as fearless.'' This, the writer of the article from which we quote holds i i be "a matter of home and school training, riiii-i- ' : have no natural antipathy to flow- rs, grass, birds, or squirrels. That is to say, the proseprity of the country raises rentals, raises the wages that must be paid for household help and occasional service, raises the price of many staples, but does not raise the salary of the government clerk. Vancouver, July 8.The gay and festive burglar held high carnival In Vancouver last night or in the early morning hours of today. Nearly twenty offices located In the Jones, Sale. Imperial, Crowe & Wilson and the Williams buildings in the centre of the business district, were entered. Safes, office vaults and desks yielded to the skill of the daring intruders. No j explosives wore used. The victims comprise dentists, lawyers, contract- ig firms and insurance companies. lXj- j spite the magnitude of the operations! the burglars, who are still at large, had very poor success, Their total gains did not amouni to $100. It is possible that last night's work was performed by half a dozen men. each being assigned tn a separate building. They are' certainly adepts at the business and their ill success was due to no fault on iheir part. The burglars virtually drew a blank at lhi' Jones building on the corner of Homer and Hastings streets. Nothing is missing frmi iiu various offices visil ed there. Their modus operandi was apparenl by an inspection of the havoc wrought to the safe in the office of F. Cf. T. Lucas in lhe old Safe block. They wrenched olf the knob of thi combination and then inserting tools forced off the combination, shattering it into several small pieces. Here they were rewarded by securing $10.15. Mr. Lucas returned las; night and had a large sum of money on his person. He i intended to have gone to his office to place it in the safe, but changing his mind returned home instead. Nexl door, in the office of W. S. Buttar. chartered accountant, the same method did not work. The combination knob was wrenched off but the lock ' resisted the efofrts of the manipulat- i rs. They had o similar experience across the srteel in the office of the. British Columbia General Contnact company, in the Crowe & Wilson building. The daring operators, how- ver. showed their versatility by successfully solving the 'combination of the safe in the office of (he .Mutual Fiie Insurance company on the same, floor. They got away with a trifle- on l.v $2 in silver. PRISONER ESCAPES. American Fighting Extradition Gets Away From the Sheriff. I e ronto, Out..
