/ THE NICOLA HERALD VoL 2. No. 15. NICOLA, B. C, THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 1906. $2 a Year RAILROAD ROUTES LOOSED GOOD FOR NICOLA BHING ON M/ W LINE. Canadian Paolflc Railway Made Num _rou* Surveys Before Finding Present Location of Railroad Line. In view of the railroad construction now fnit'P on in th* valley, li is interest- inar tr. cinsider that at tine time there wag a T-osiihility of the C. P R main line pawn, thr- u_th Nicnla Valley. It had hem decided that the hest pa>s through the Rocky Munteiniaaa the Yellow Head tnd between thtt and tht coast at the end of IH"- three routes were reported for the Iranscohiiiientalrailrtad. First. The one frm Yellnwheed Pan hy the rivera Thoinpeou and Frater to Burr-inl inlet. Second. A loop line lea. in*, lhe first St Ksilll"0|ia 'tnd p sanifj ill n_ Nicolt lak* through the Ci_piahalia pass to tht Kra*rr It Hope h.n tn Burrard bile.. Third. A line branching fmm ihe firs at the conflueiiiw nf tht river. Clearwater and Thoiniison ahove Kamloops and er. tending to K-quimall. N<>ne of thest lilies .-ulil he considered wholly satisfactory and it became i.ecesstry to continue the work "f the survey. In 1873 there wert seven rniitts re- ported uo ii Tin route fbri-gh Nicola Valley and then. hy tl.a C->quat*. -Il to Hope li still one of them, hut 'he difficulties of the route lie in the 128 mile! between Hope and Kaiiiloops involving an ascent of 3613 feet with gradnnts ranging as high an 172 feet in s mil.' and tailing for tuiiiielllng.thesggregate len_th being eatiuiatcd at tiv* miles The alter native route of continuing frmn Kim loops hy Lytfo* tnd then hy the Fras*r to Hope was agaiu uiifavoraMy reported up- 0, then being formidable difficulties tlnog the canyons of tht river Thoropion i' il Fraser, owing tn the eiireme y ntr row gorges through which these rivers 1-iw enttiling enurnioUHly httvy work tnd proportionately great cost. The re. Oiaimng routes do tot call fur toy special Belli mn In 1874 a re-eianimation of the route through the Coqushalla waa made, and it Was found that while important change! o*_|*f through the Yellow Head pass wa* abandoned and a ne* mute the Kirking Horse Pass was fintll. filed upon a* being tht chosen routt. Perhaps (hit wis due ii,..r* tn r-'gencies ia the prairie re^i-ms than to difficulties In this province. It is interesting huwaver, to note thai now, when railways are being prospected in frequently in Brush 0 I" uin|ua the ne* lines hallo* to closely lie olle for the track to reach Coutlee by lhe first of May not to mention the question of high water One of the principal causes of delay hns been lack of ties. It appears that the order was misconstrued with the result that ties ran short during the early part of last week, and at the present time matters have not improved to any considerable extent. A trip down the right of way reveals at once the principal cause of delaythe scarcity of men. The majority of the men employed are ndians, who. as is well known, will work hard until they have m-ide a small stake, then they will lie around several days and incidentally indulge in booze A pr )minent contractor stated that his chief difficulty was keeping his men. I he contractor in question has a,reputation for treating his men well, both on the grade and in camp, so that the reason for men straying is yet to seek. A restless feeling is very apparent among the men which can be directly traced to the indecision as to further con struction. Should this construction proceed the restless feeling would at once vanish, blown away by the certainty of remunerative work until far in the fall of the year. The facts enumerated are rather disappointing but nevertheless our readers need not become pessimistic with regard to the future as should further construction be advised as we have good reason for believing it will be, things will hum in the valley this summer. AI'KIL 11 WI Last week rumors were rife regarding a large mining deal in Aspen Grove. Although confirmation of this has not yet been received, we under stand that there is some truth in the rumor, but until full particulars are to hand we do not care to publish any of the details. A coast paper publishes the information that some coal properties up the Coldwater have been sold to New York capitalists. Here again, rumor has gone beyond the mark. While there are no doubt negotiations proceeding with regard to coal lands in this district, no coal areas to the extent named are held by any one individual. Boosting the valley in a proper way is com mendable as we have the minerals here, but these unfounded rumors of sale of mining properties do not tend to help the valley at all and when these rumors do not materialize it gives a locality a set back from which it mty take sometime to recover. o<-_-n of the. government to give the aid that was empowered by the Subsidy Act; and they, quite justifiably in my opinion, thought it proper to refer the matter to the court" Dowie, the prophet, has been suspended from the church, which he founded, the message being signed by all the prominent adherents to Zionism.
