Christmas Fare in Britain
Deiplte general conditions of food
shortage, Britain's Food Minister, John
8trichey, hag labored hard to provide
the homes of Britain with a tew extras
for thi Christmas season. They are not
u much as Britons had last year, but
still they are extras. There la to be a
little more meat and i Mttle more sugar, and children under 18 and people
ever 70 are to get an extra half pound
«f chocolate and sweets.
About turkey the Ministry thinks
it hu done very wel Undeed. Britain
Is to have at least half as many again
as there were last Christmas. They are
coming from Northern Ireland, Eire,
South America' and from Australia,
Which is sending Britain 500 tons, and
from whom she had none lut year.
Another Interesting thing about turkeys is that there will be 500 tons from
.Hungary and 500 tons from Yugoslavia,
•o Britain's Christmas dinners will be
Jnore than ever International.
Iveryone in Britain is going to have
A pound of oranges each. They will
some chiefly from Palestine and South
Africa, and there will be smaller qusn-
titles from Cyprua and Jamaica. Palatini is sending a small quantity of
lemons—not nearly enough to go round,
but they will help to make Christmas
meals more interesting. Canada, which
•lone hu sent 54,000 tons of apples in
fie put two monthi, and the United
States are sending enough apples to
mike a country-wide distribution, and
the children will get iome bananu
from Jamaica.
The wines snd spirits picture is described u much brighter. There will
be supplies from Australia, South Africa, France, Holland and Denmark. But
there is an internal difficulty here:
there ig a shortage of customs inspectors, so there is delay ln clearing the
wines and spirits through the Cuitomi
end, even when they are cleared, there
are bottling delays because of an acute
shortage of bottles.
Owing to s scute fat ihortage there
will be no additional cakes, or richer
eakes, for uie. But, u a special concession, for Christmas only, bakers will
be allowed to put i little Icing on them
order and that dignity of demeanor for
which Toronto in particular ii notable.
A Torontonian behind closed doon
with a bottle of spirits wu ons thing;
in public, with a glass, he will automatically maintain that superb aplomb that
makes Ontario what lt is.

Ontario's New Liquor Law
A New Year li always i gladsome
thing. The end of 1948, however, will
be ar occulon for special rejoicing in
Ontario, for 1M7 holdi forth promiiei
of unusual happiness. After iome 20
years of self-imposed seml-prohlbltion,
oocktail lounges sre once again to be
reestablished in the five largest cities
Sf that province. Once again spirits are
to be sold openly and by the glass.
Ontario itill does not trust itself to
be adult after Its long tutelage. No
tempting bottles are to be arranged behind bars to offer suggestions to the
suggestible. Spirits are to kept discreetly out of light and only brought
forth ln the portions ordered. Moreover, centres miller than the lucky
big flee must still vote themselves into
the privilege! accorded their metropolitan brethren. But despite the restrictions with which the coniumption
of ilcohol will itlll be hedged, after
January 1 liquor ln Ontario will once
again be sold to be consumed ln com-
peratlve comfort.
The contemplated reform li long
overdue. Puritanism for the uke of
mere suppression hu never so successfully defeeted itself u under the system of liquor control now legal In Ontario and. it It to be regretted, In BrltUh
Columbia. The Inconvenience of purchasing slcohol it s liquor store ti ■
trial; but po inhibition. The liquor It
bought, however tiresome the proceu.
More, the liquor Is consumed. All of it
Is consumed, snd. In many cases In
quantities In exceu of what would have
been taken If mirthased br the glau.
Maay a man who would gladly take a
single glim of spirits for sociability,
finds himself splitting in unneceaury
30 ounces in someone'i hotel bedroom.
Cocktail lounges, It may be tup-
