Identity of Interest in
Building Tourist Travel
Establishment of the Inland Em-
[rfre-Kootenay Boundary Travel Bu-
reau is a forward-looking step toward
development of post-war tourist travel.
Spokane wishes to strengthen its
position as the tourist gateway to the
Glorious Kootenay Country and to
Ihe highways to the North. It wants
to route tourists in this direction, so
that it can develop a greater and more
profitable volume of tourist business.
If Spokane can capitalize on Koo-
tenay's tourist attractions then both
Spokane and Kootenay-Boundary can
Cash in on the proceeds.
■ Joint efforts to develop the trade
•re obviously good business for the
Eastern Washington centre and for
the people of this area.
Spokane realizes, as do we, that we
ean't afford to delay until Germany's
surrender and the defeat of Japan the
organization of sound and well-supported efforts to secure and service
the tourist business. Delay would
mean a continuance of the pre-war
tourist habit of spending a few hours
in Spokane and rolling eastward or to
the Pacific Coast. Spokane didn't get
as much business out of the travel as
it deserved, and nor did we.
To build up the tourist business
three main developments are essential. They are:
(1) Modern highways from the International Boundary into British Columbia;
(2) The best of accommodation and
recreation for tourists while they are
here;
(3) Lively and sustained publicity
for what we have to offer.
TJuv job cannot be done without
lubstaniMal expenditures, but the prof-
Its to be made are large. Tourism can
be made one of Kootenay's richest industries. But, like most other business,
ft won't come to us without plenty of
effort on our part.
Canada's Qu'Appelle Has a
Great Record as Former
Foxhound
One of the hardest worked destroy-
ers in the Royal Navy, H.M.S. "Foxhound", built in John Brown's, and
bow a part of the Canadian navy and
renamed "Qu'Appelle" has steamed
.40,000 miles since the war began and
Claims this as a record unequalled by
any other ship of the Allied Navies or
Merchant Fleets now afloat. For almost
four years of war "Foxhound" has
iteamed an average of 7000 miles a
month in seas from Iceland to the Bay
of Bengal.
In battle and in escort work, patrols
and rescue missions, "Foxhound" has
put to sea in every kind of weather.
Her story is one of weeks and months
of seagoing, interspersed with short
periods in harbor and, once a year, a
much needed refit Fourteen hundred
and twenty-six days of non-stop vigilance, with "Action Stations" just
found the corner every moment, of
Careful tending of high-powered machinery which in one month alone must
perform tens of thousands of revolutions, are part of her achievement.
H.M.S. "Foxhound", with the Home
fleet when war broke ouH, was in at
one of the first U-boat "kills" when she
and her sister-ship and "Firedrake"
tank U-39 near the Orkneyt. Later she
escorted thr world's largest ship, the
"Queen Elizabeth", on her wartime
maiden voyage to New York, an Inter-
eating experience, as by the end of the
aecond day the liner had worked up
to such a speed that the destroyers
could not keep up
In the second Battle of Narvik
Fiord, "Foxhound" steamed in with the
battleship H.M.S. "Warspite," and in
the fight that followed, blew up a German destroyer by gunfire Next month
ahe wu among the escorts for the British force which occupied Iceland
Steaming into the Mediterranean.
Toxhound" then became part of tho
now famous "Force H", whose first job
wa» to disable the French Fleet at Orgs!.. She was with H.M.S. "Ark Royal"
when Naval aircraft from the carrier
bombed Cagllari ln Sardinia. On tha
latter occasion the Commander-in-
Chiefs signal io the force on leaving
Gibraltar was: "The object of the present operation is to test the quality and
price of ice cream!" (In Britain Ice
cream has been regarded as an Italian
confection, as it was originally vended
chiefly by Italians from carta in the
streets).
In 1940 when she wu refitting ln
London docks, the "blitz" wu ln full
swing. "Foxhound" wm subjected to
the continuous and heavy bombing
which covered the whole of the dock
