Klondyke Memorial
Kari; __o__i_s days in tta Cans-
j.a_ luaun its recalled by Canada's
most northerly historic site, a bronze
tablet at ths entrance to the Administration building in Dawson City, Yukon. Erected some years ago by the
Department of Mines and Resources
on the advice of the Historic Sites and
Monuments Board of Canada, this
memorial tablet pays perpetual tribute
to the memory of the hardy pioneers
whoae determination and courage gave
vast riches to the world.
Braving extreme dangers and untold hardships, those indomitable prospectors and miners ventured through
the Chilkat and Chilkoot Passes Into
the unexplored valley of the Yukon to
pave the way for the discovery of the
rich gold fields with whieh the names
- of Robert Henderson and George W.
Carmack are inseparably associated.
For many years gold had been prospected for in the Yukon, but none of
the discoveries created any great excitement until the rich find was mads
on Bonanza Creek on Aug. 17, 1896.
Had this lucky strike not been made it
Is possible that the treasures of Bonanza, Eldorado, Hunker, Dominion,
Gold River, and many others might
stin lie hidden sway m the bedrock
and gfavel covered by the heavy for-
ests that grew in the valley.
After almost half a century the Yu-
kon continues to be an important producer of gold, but the pan, rocker and
sluicing methods of the early Klondike
miners havs been replaced by hutte
Wr'ro-electrlc cower dredges. AI-

Todav ths Yukon is being opened
up in various ways owing to the war—
by t^e Alaska Highway, bv the Domin.
ion Government's search for wsr metals, and by the proximity of the fiVht-
ing.forces of both the United States
and Canada. It may easily be that the
Yukon will receive a new and permanent lease of life from present developments.
