LONG BEACH, Csl., Feb. 1.—
With the distinction of being the
second man to swim the Catalina
channel, Henry F. Sullivan of
Lowell, Mass.^ today recuperated
at a bath establishment hsra from
the effects of his struggle with
the chilly waters of the Pacific.
Sullivan, who has a croesing of
the English channel to his credit
as well as a number of natatorial
records, and who was an unsuccessful entrant in the Wrigley
125,000 marathon, touched shore
at Pvwnt Vincente at a few minute* before midnight last night,
completing the channel swim in
22 hours and 45 minutes.
Starting from a point north of
the isthmus on Santa Cat -..na
island at 1:03 .i.m, Monday, Sullivan swam steadily but slowly
to the same point where George
Young, youthful Canadian, finished1 hia spectacular swim two
weeks ago and wan the Wrigley
prize.
Sullivan's successful completion
of the swim was attested to by
J. J. Conlon, his trainer and manager; Irvin Davids, pilot; E. F.
Chase, a Salt Lake City photographer; Jack Swam, a Long Beach
newspaper mart, and a number of
others.

HANKOW, Feb. 1.—The Nation-
aliet (Cantonese) government will
sign an agreement for a new
treaty with Great Britain as toon
ao the British forcee sre withdrawn from Shanghai. This official announcement was made tonight by Eugen-j Chen, Nationalist minister of foreign affaire.
In hit ttatement, Mr. Chen said
that negotiations with Owen
O'Malley British charge d'affaires,
virtually had been completed regarding the British concession at
Hankow, the document requiring
only the signature of both parties.
The Nationalist government,
said Chen, although it haa been
negotiating while the British were
massing troops at Shanghai, never
will aign the agreament until those
forces have been withdrawn from
that city. The minister asserted
that his signature to the document in present circumetsncei
would be tantamount to signing
under immedi.it j duress, which
would make* the anreement one
that would not be lasting.
WOULD BE AID
The withdrawal of the British
forces, said Mr. Chen, would inaugurate a new <ra of relations
bet we. n Nationalist China and
Britain. But, he added, if th-
British troops ond warthipt remain, negotiations for the treaty
will cease.

HANKOW, Feb. 1. — Great Britain
waa told today by the Cantonese government lhat "Until the British ceased
their heavy concentration of troops and
warships nt Shanghai, tbe Nationalists
of China would not enter into negotiations for a new treaty."
Plans of the British to land 20,001
saMferf. in the International concessions
os Shanghai, with dozens of warships
floating in the river, and war airplanes
circling overhead, were hold incompatible with moves toward peaceful adjustment of the differences of the two
nations as to British Influence and
holdings ln China.
Eugene Chen, foreign minister of the
Cantonese government, terminated the
preliminary discussions with Owen
o'Mnlley, British charge d'affaires,
:-ft'*r stating his views ln regard to the
forthcoming British warlike concrntra-
tlon at Shanghai.

Tho termination of tho negotiations

Hrllaln was prepared to yield to most
of the demands mado hy the Cantonese
for the elimination of British administration of sones tn China. It has been
stated that O'Malley was Instructed to
agree to the relinquishment of Chinese
-jurisdiction of the control of British
exercise In numerous concession dU-
rlcts of Chinese cities.
The British reserved certain rights
of representation to guarantee protection of her nationals' Interests. The
International settlement at Shanghai
was not included in the negotiations.
Hxtra- territoriality wss anothea
privilege the British would have relinquished, li was said, with its provisions
for trial of British ln China In their own
courts.
The fact that Great Britain, through
Minister Lampson, was conducting
similar negotiations with the 1'eking

of negotiations by the Cantonese. Each

Is of an Interesting
Nature
"It wasn't like thai!" Judy said
ssionutely.
"Were you engaged to Tommy
hen ho went away?" Cecily's tone
la sharp, cold.
"Yes."
"Did ymi ever t- ll him tin truth?"
I'No."
"Well, what are you Isinf to toll
(m now?"
Judy sat suddenly erect. "That will
between Tommy und me," she
da.
Cecity shook her prettv head in its
lm, smart Httle hat. "You think so,
it *t won't!" she said firmly.
Jhat's where I come in. I mean to
,tow what you are going to toll
lm. I have a right to know. I told

liat you want. I want Tommy.
pw, will you tell me?"
'Judy's voice trembled us she start-
I to speak, but it steadied rapidly.
i—I've led a pretty muddled sort
■ life, haven't 1?" She sighed. "I'm
Jrry. I wish I could undo it all,
t, of course, I can't."
"And you're right. You're entitled
know what I mean tu do about
mmy. I can only toll him tho
th. What else Is there to do?"
"Do you love him?"
Judy shook her head sadly. "No.
never really did. I tried to but I
uldn't!"
"But he loved you?"
Judy saw the pain in Cecily's eyes,
what the ("Ueslion cost ber.

Ing gesture. "Ymi see, I am bold.
am different from you. I want to
and I'm not afraid to say so.
ke chances nre Tommy won't like
Vt as much as he does your quiet,
lovely indifference. I can see where
that would set a man quite crazy.
But if he can't have that he might
find my sort of love comforting, at
least." She gave a little laugh,
mirthless and touched with blttcr-
i.e«H "I'm so shameless that I
don't Mra ano^ more about thut than
I do about his being poor."
"I'ut he's not poor!" Judy said.
And suddenly her face crinkled with
mischief. "He has heaps and heaps
of money. His father has all sorts
of mines and things. Your people
won't mind ln the leftst!"
I or an instant a Httle shadow
darkened Cecily's1 lovely eyes, her
shoulders drooped. "I'm sorry!" she
said. "That Is, I am almost sorry.
.Somehow 1 wanted It to be very hard
—my marrying him! I'd like to have
hud to give up things for him!" And
on the instant of her pathos she
gave a delicious laugh. "I'm talking
ol marrying him and he doesn't even
yet know but what he's engaged to
you!"
A moment more nnd she looked at
Judy darkly. "I'll never forgive you
.If you've hurt him!" she cried. "I
think you've been beastly to him!"
Suddenly Judy laughed. In spite
of her heavy heart she felt almost
happy In Cecily's hope of happiness.
"Xou obght to thank mo for not
loving hlni!" she cried.
"Were those letters In the paper,
the letters to 'The Girl Back Home,'
were they written to you?"
Judy flushed. "I don't know!" she
admitted.
"ll tiny were," Cecily said slowly,
"In- will never love me! Never! Thero
was real love in those letters fpr the
girl he was writing to!"
"Sometimes " she paused, looked away wistfully, "sometimes I used
to imagine they were written to me!
Oh, I know lt was foolish! You can
laugh if you want to. But I said to
myaflli that if he were writing to
you directly there was no reason he
Not;M pour his heart out In the
paper for tho world to see-—unless
hfl was trying to reach a girl he
didn't dare write them to! I know
it sounds absurd when I say it that
way—but I sometimes thought It
might be that way." She looked at
Judy, pleadingly.
Judy could only shake her h- ad
"I don't know!" she repeated. "I
wish I did. It would make things su
much simpler. But I don't know!"

The Oblique View
The oblique way of looking at

I have been talking over the question of the meat bill with several
young.housekeepers lately and I find
that many of them have Ideas which
vary greutly from mine in regard
to economy in this line.
For ins.ance, one girl overlooked
the Pool quality of chicken (the so-
called "fatted" chicken), and bought
a cheaper grade which apparently
gave her more meat for her money.
Now a "fatted" chicken is really
. heaper in the end, for a UU*00 taA
a half pound chicken of this finest
quality contains as much meat as a
four and a half pound bird of a
.heaper grado. 11' or in the cheaper
bird the bomi tM waste MOfO than
make up for lhe extra pound and the
meat Is not so tender).
Another inexperienced young
housewife made the mistake of
buying too much turkey for Thanksgiving and Christmas'; her dinner
party would have had to have a five-
pound chicken (if she had wished
chicken instead of turkey)—yet she
bought a 10-pound turkey for thejn!
This was not at all necessary; a
seven-pound turkey of the very best
quality would have been ample for
a crowd of people who required a
five-pound chicken. Why do Of Bool
that we must have "the biggest turkey on the market" at holiday times?
it is the utmost extravagance. If
you served your family group a
large turkey in tho holidays just
pas*., resolve to try out the plan of
serving them a turkey which will
just "squeak through" (as the school
children say) next time you wish
to have a special feast—try serving
the smallest turkey that could possibly be used for that number of
people, and I am sure that you will
ba surprised to find how far such
a turkey Btretches.
Another good plan is to serve a
cream soup before a turkey dinner,
to take the edge off the appetite.
Why should people think they can
"fill up" on so expensive a dish as
roast turkey? Just a generous taste
if it is enough. Plenty of delicious
fixin's" will also help to conserve
the turkey—three Inexpensivi- VOfO-
tahh's. I lOpCO, j-'lllis. hot biscuits.
etcetera.
Qonorolly speaking, poopla onff
more meat than is good for them
nyway. Plenty of fruits and vegetables are better for us. A pmind Of
two of lean meat should bo made
(through attractive serving, combining it with other ingredients like
the Chill con carne ln the above
BU) to serve four or five people.

Rossland Takes Lead in First;

TRAIL, Feb. 1.—Playing a brand
uf -'iitni'inatlon in offensive and defensive tactics that wa.1* a complete
revelation even to ita own supporters,
Trail West Kootenay Hockey league
sextet decisively defeated tho visiting^
Rossland team, 3-1 before a crowd
of about 2,000 fans here tonight.
It was Trail's smoothest and
most polished effort this season and
besides giving the homo fans all tho
thrills of seeing them win, lt gave
them added jny of seeing Trail tied
with Itossland in the raco for the
league championship.
Rossland played brilliantly. Their
combination was as smooth, and
their opportunism as bright as ever,
and the dashing attacks of tho
speedy uphill boys especially had the,
fair supporters of Trail screaming
in apprehension. But for the second and third periods they were outplayed and oiitKinssi'd in every department. The best team on thu lot
to ionlght certainly won.

Comes to Defence of Reputation
of William E. Gladstone;
Court Crowded
LONDON, Feb l.—The good name
and reputation of the late William E.
Gladstone, England's grand old man,
today was vigorously defended In
court, against intimations In a recent
book by Captain Peter Wright that
ho was a hypocrite in masters of sex.
Lily Langtry, the noted actress with
whose name Captain Wright had
linked Gladstone's during his testimony in trial of his libel suit against
Lord Gladstone, aon of the late prime
minister, sent a telegram from Monte
Carlo repudiating the "slanderous accusation." The famous actress who
is now Lady Dc Bathe, broke a silence of many years to defend herself against Captain Wright's statements regarding her friendship for
tin' elder Gladstone.
Showed Carelessness
Rotors a court room crowded with
many notable figures in .London's
f.ishionable and legal world, Norman
tfirkett, counsel for Lord Gladstone,
denounced Captain Wright as a man
who had shown himself 'Varelesn of
the pain he might inflict,"
Wincing lhe ordeal. Captain Wright
said that he was sorry that he had
written the passage In his book "Portraits and Criticisms" casting aspirations on tlie elder < Hadstmie's
mora] character, and that he resetted
hurting the feelings of the Gladstone
family, but that he could not withdraw what be believed to be true.
.Meaninj,' of the word "seraglio,"
which came under discussion at a previous hearing recurred again today
"li n Mr. Blrkott invited Captain
Wright to reud a passage from Bos-
«til's "Life of Johnson," in which John-
sen was cited as jocularly referring to
his group of household women as a
■>eragllp."
Captain Wright pflltf that Boswell
might h.ive Joked In his use of the
word, but that tho late Lord Milner,
whom he cited as once using It with
leferene.' to thfl elder Gladstone, had
not.
Was Influenced
l.at.r, faptaln Wright said that he
hud spoken of the elder Oladstone as
in- spe-iks of any great man of the
past, like Napol.on. 'I had no thought
uf liis family or descendants." he said.
Only 900 copies of his boifk had been
uold. he said. Letters of the noted
RuflfllflQ h-amy. Olga Novlkoff, to the
elder Gladstone Wire then read In an
effort to refute r. statement by Captain
J Wright that she. too, had been Intimate
with the late pr.me minister. One let-
, ter Mid:
"If in free Kngland people cannot
correspond without bring vulgarly
! i .ilumiiiated, Hun Kngland is dcgent*r-
, uting."
C i>i.nn Wright Interpreted this as
j showing that thfl sldflf Uladstone was
unto thfl flboolutfl lubjocuofl of
