THE ROULEVS
There whs no (jiieenlc to shield
him now Even Sid wns gone. Denny threw one swift glance nt Aunt
.fosie'-s lumlipriiig figure dashing to
the gas meter. As he ran, Prince
Jerry harked. That ruined the only
chance. For Aunt Josie heard and
hurried.
"Denny, come here!" She reached
out nnd caught his arm. Ho hung
his head, hut that didn't repel Aunt
Josie. She leaned down and pressed
tho coarse lips, that always smelted
of cahhages on his. He shivered.
"Come in and he quick, Denny,
There's not much time. Come along!"
Denny didn't hudge.
"Don't stand there like a little
stone, Denny. Havo you lost your
tongue? Ain't you glad to go with
your aunt and your little sister?"
Denny's chin douhled: "Xo, I
ain't."
"Shame, Denny. That's not a nice
thing to pay. Hurry now!"
So Denny niarchrd in and stood
with hreaklng heart as his shirts,
ha few ties, stockings and overalls
•were folded and placed in the straw
hamper. Aunt Josie, her bulky figure seeming to bulge over the whole
room, talked incessantly.

Denny, his voice breaking, blurted out: "I ain't goin'!"
Aunt Jpsie sighed wearily, looked

fell.

But l'rincc Jerry went along. Katy
and bis cousin, Lizzie were just
coming home for lunch as they
reached the house. h'aiy's cloudless blue eyes danced, hut she lowered her head shyly say: ng in a
li.^iant, polite way; "I,o, Denny."
Then she ran up and whispered excitedly; "Oooh! You'll ketch it if
I'nele Matt sees Prince!"
Denny pulled bo hard at the
strap that Prince Jerry yelped. His
young master turned with a gulp:
"Shut up, I'rince, I tell you shut
up! Kin 1 help it?"
That first night of his return to
his uncle's house Denny never forgot.
In Qtteenie's flat even the kitchen
•.molt nice. At night after Sid fried
the steak she us.I to light littlo
cones of incense to make it "sweet
and fantastic." That's what she
often said.
Hut Aunt Josle's kitchen was a
hubditb of odors—the soup boiling over or tbe potatoes burning,
the meat smoking and the everlasting hangover smell of cabbage. Tbe
loom was canopied in murk
In one corner was the granite
sink with a closet for tbe pois and
pans built underneath. Next to the
sink was the stove and in the opposite corner a battered sewing
machine. The table, always covered with a tpattered brown and
white doth was set near the stove
so that Aunt Josie could reach over
and bring the blackened pans right
to tbe table. Denny hate I to .ve
her do this.
He sat between his t.BtOt, Kulie,
and his crtusin. Lizzie. -Vex** to them
was the baby in a high chair and
opposite was the oldest of Matt Dor-
ley's children—Violet.
Violet Was 16. She wore her hair
turned tinder, w.lh a. great taffeta
bow that was a source of delight
and annoyance, for she was const,-m Ily spreading it out wilh vain,
s. If-conscious little touches. as
though to say, "Sec what a pretty
thing I am!"
Pretty and dainty, she was but
a pathetic uncertainty In the winsome chin the eyes overlarge and
tar too eager, the curved mouth,
that was at once childish and willful. One could look ut Violet and
feel nad.
She was at that age whrn she
liked to imagine herself fine and
beautiful. Matt Borley's kitchen
continually in.crruplnd her airy
fancies.
Just now" she came over and
kissed Denny, doing it very fML-
clously, as though she were a
prince, and Denny liked her and
looked up to her.
Aunt Josie, puffing a great deal
evidently in a state of suppressed
excitement served the meat. She
kept looking toward tbe door and
repeating. "Hurry children—hurry."
"Ma," Violet frowned in disdain,
"do we have to choke down our
food?"
"Violet," Aunt Josie pleaded, "you
know better."
"I'm getting sick of it, ma' I'll
not stand It!"
"Voe!" Then suddenly. "Hush!"
Tbe door was flung open. I'nele
Matt came in. A troubled, un
easy silence. The bulking form
with Its undershot jaw clinched,
its little pig eyes gleaming, stood
iu tlm center of the room sneering at Aunt Josle's red, anxious
face.
"Vou wnild do it wouldn't you?
Had to fetch tbe brat? Couldn't
rest till you got him, fool that you
ing back. for...me. .He told me to
wait. He jgt\ve me $2 told me he
was coming."
'"He did, did he? Two dollars,
eh? Where are they-?'' -
Denny breathed fast, winked harder, but he didn't answer. The massive finger pressed his chin. "Where
are they."
Again came Katy'a warning kick,
"I got 'em," Denny answered.
"You got 'em, have you? Let's
hnve a look." The hand caught
Denny hy the shoulder, brought
him to his feet. "Now, my fine
millionaire!"'
The second thrust Into Denny's
pocket brought out Sid's parting gift.
Matt laughed.
"That pays for your dinner, brat!"
Denny shut his eyes, quick,
doubled his lips together and as
Matt. Horley strode from the room,
he shook both fists after him. Katy
stuck out her tongue as far as it
would go.
■ "Mamma!" Lizzie yelled. "Katy
stuck out he tongue nt papa. She
made a face,"
"Shut-up, you little' tattle-tale?"
Violet's pretty face was white and
all the curves gone from the willful mouth. Hhe turned indignantly
to her mother. "It's a shame, ma.
I'd not stand for It." Then she got
tip in disgust and left the room.
Aunt Josie Jabbed a comb into her
coarsened hair, scraped bones and
meat into a newspaper and let
Denny lake them down to Prince.
As soon as he reached the basement where it was dark, Denny began to cry. He put his arms around
Drince Jerry and let hlm lick the
tears away.
It seemed a year since yesterday;
years and years since Queenie hail
knelt at his bed whispering gay liltle stories in his ear. Denny thought
of that moving light across her red
lips. He grew frightened and went
dashing up the stairs.
That n'ght he lay in a. littlo eiio
next to Katy's, his eyes peering into
the darkness. There waa it step—,t
slim forth leaning over him. Denny
shook from head to fooi: "Queenie
—mamma ?"
"Denny." It Was only Violet. She
pressed a dime into his hand, "Don't
you care, Denny. Sid's sure to
come." * ,
"I know," Denny gulped. "He tole
me be would."
Denny believed it. Kvery morning he woke up thinking: "He'll
come today." Kvery nigtu he went
to ■sleep hoping: "He'll come tomorrow" He'd run home from school,
saying to himself: "Maybe
there. (lee. I bet ho is!"

Extravagance Continues at
Ottawa
Estimates for the fiscal year
ending March .11, 1926, tallied
in parliament last week, show
not a glimmer of government
economy. True, they are $6,933,-
279 below the estimates of last
year, but of this more than
$5,000,000 is made up bv decreased interest on the national
debt and reduced expenditures
for soldier land settlement and
disestablishment — economies
that could not be helped.
In no fewer than seven
branches of administration expenditure has been actuallv
heightened, and where reductions are made they are but as
a drop in the bucket.
The mental processes of the
ministry baffle comprehension.
Thus, with revenue $60,000,000
below last year—a fact which
in itself makes Mr. King's professions of prosperity ridiculous
—ministers have gone on spending money as though taxes were
inexhaustible. The Ottawa
Journal estimates that an increase of from 60 to 80 millions
in the national debt is a practical certainty for the year.
And the lupplementariei—always sinister on an election
year—plus compensation for
Home bank depositors, are still
to come.
Wembley Again
Canada will again be in the
full and profitable light of Empire publicity by reason of its
display at Wembley repeating
next summer. Definite announcement has been made that
the Dominion government will
continue participation in the
great all-British fair, and on a
scale that will lie as notice-
compelling as last year. For
a time there was some uncertainty as to whether or not this
and other dominions would
again be represented at Wembley, but it. is satisfactory tn
know that all have now decided
to cooperate again,, in similar
or even more effective ways.
There can be no doubt that
it is worth while for Canada to
be thus represented at the great
British Empire exhibition. It
is not always possible to trace
results from such an undertaking, but results there certainly
have been and will lie, for missionary publicity of this sort
bears fruit not in a single year
alone but through many years.
The favorable attention given
the Canadian displays last summer will mean more people and
money for the Dominion over,
perhaps, a long period, and a
second exhibit will clinch the
argument still more securely.
It may be taken for granted
that better provisions will lie
made for attracting visitors to
Wembley. That is part of the
arrangements that must be left
to the boards or committees in
charge, but the Canadian government might quite properly
be consulted on this as on other
points. The attendance last
year was somewhat disappointing, and not as many people
saw the round-the-Empire exhibits as had been hoped for.
It will be to Canada's advantage
in this second fair year to see
that, in one way or another,
the attractions of Wembley are
made known to the farthest
bounds of the British Isles and
the Empire itself.

'Sweetening1 the Stomach
and Intestine
(Registered in neeonlam-e wilh the
Opyright act).
Ymi hear a fTttt d-al these days
about aridity, arid slomaeh, hyperacidity, all meaning the maufaeture
of too much of the add Julos which
digests the food in lhe stomach.
There is no .piostion but that too
much meat, e^Ks, and fruits, (not
usually rips fruit), all have a tendency to cause this extra acidity, and
cause Whal i*** known as acid Indigestion.
Accordingly in an endeavor to pre-
venl ihis eomlilion. ymi may decide lo eat a great quantity of
bread, ami find tha! you are not
any better, perhaps even worse.
You see lhe acid condition of your
stomach has persisted for such a
long time, that the stomach has got
the habit of manufacturing an excessive quantity. Thus, when you eat
bread and it arrives In lhe stomach.
this tremendous quantity of acid
juice immediately pounces upon It.
What happens then?
Why the action, the alkaline action
oT vour saliva or mouth juice, which
has been aeling on this bread food, is
overwhelmed and <p>ils work entirely,
instead of completing its work of
starch digestion.
What does tins mean?
That this undigested starch actually
Stagnates In the stomach, nnd becomes really nn ii*Vitant of Ihe stomach lining, and so more and more
stomach jufoe Is miiiuifuotnd.-r, causing an wren greater acidity of the
stomach.
What is my suggestion?
Thai bread Is all rtghl in this condition if eaten properly, that is that
the slices should be thin, should be
baked or toasted dry, with very little
butler on them.
The next Important thing is to
chew il well. It should be chewed and
chewed in ihis dry stale, without
tlqU-tds, so that the saliva can gel
well mixed up wilh Ihe very small
particles into which th,- food is divided by ihis extra amount of chewing. This permit! digestion ol the
starches lo begin ii*-.!)! where il
should begliy iii..i is in iii.* month.
Remember, then, lhal bread can cause
acidity it eaten tno rapidly, and Ihere-
fore, your excessive aridity is noi
necessarily dun to meats cereals and
raw fruits.

Is no doubt that Colonel Taylor deserved the highest honors on Saturday night, but at the same time the
memberi of the entire cast worked
so hard, and achieved such success,
lhat it is difficult to know who to
mention first.
After Colonel Taylor, the honors
were equally shared by D. H. ftayley
as Hogg, and K. Falkner as Kipley
Guildford. Mr. Hayley is an old
favorite, and liis many admirers were
delighted with his humorous and
sympathetic manservant, who was

and It looks for a few moments as II'
affairs in this direction, at least, are
to flow on happily, but Mra. Guild- i

and after a spirited scene succeeds
in pa rling the young couple. The
act closes with Hlinn Corbclt arranging to go to laominn next day to
enlist as a private, Hogg, the butler,
going will) him on the same mission.

was never Mr. Rayley. So often,
'to j with inexperienced actors and act-
' resses, one finds that they are unable to shed their own personalities,
but this It not a fault of whieh Mr.
liayley can he accused. As for Mr.
Faikner—Ids Ripley Guildford was a,
constanl delight, it was understood
thnt this was Mr. Falkner's first appearance on the stage. His immediate and sustained success on Saturday, and the wholehearted appreciation of lhe audience, should encourage him lo keep on with the
good woril, He has humor and a
quick imagination; nnd if he can
overcome a tendency to speak on
rather a low key he should go far in
character parts mich as this.
Miss BeatriM West made a charming Susan, looked very pretty, acted
very naturally, and was altogether to
be congratulated on her rendering of
a long and somewhat difficult part.
Mrs. Niven, who took the part of
Mrs. Corbett. a hysterical Haddon

Ihe life the author's vision of the
Simple devoled wile, and her acting
throughout was dolighil'ul.
Mis. A. \V. Taylor, so far as the
ladies were concerned, ran her husband a close second as Mrs. Guildford. Mrs. Taylor has strong drama-
lie power, and is an experienced
actress, as her skilful handling of the
quarrel se. tie in act 1 proved.

piece of work: and a few minutes
later her comedy scene, entirely different, with Hogg was equally good.

Hjalmar lh ant ing, the first Bo-
eulisl prime minister in the history
Of Sweden, and one of the outstanding public men of that country in
his time, was regarded by the Swedish people as thejr country's most
Internationa! politician.
Worked for Working Classes
Devoting virtually his entire life
to the amelioration of the conditions of the working classes, and
the attainment of the Social Democratic dream of universal peace by
universal understanding, Dr, Blunting worked unceas ugly and with I
fine optimism for the realization of
his ideals. Re spared himself no
personal sa-rifice. and even sat iu
pr son for his companionship of the
Utile of those whose caste and
culture were Inferior to his own.
Interference with these activities,
which he regarded as iiis more Important International work, prominent Swedes said at the time, was
the real reason for Dr. UraUting's
resignation as finance minister in
the Kden gov. rnment in His, although he had sa'd he mu withdrawing from the cabinet because
of the con, liip,n of bis health.
Nnc<vided to Power
The ministry from which he resigned fell In 1920, and Dr, Brant-
lug succeeded to power, forming an
entirely Social Demoratlo admtnl-
tration. His government remained
In power, however, only from .March
iu itrtuiier. when it resigned.
As a result of the Socialists' victory in the eln Hon in ihe fall of
1921 ho uas returned to power. Il i
governmt nt remained until April
i H3, during \\ hich Bran ting was
hoth premier and foreign minister.
Jt resigned alter having been defeated in the upper chamber on a
proposal by the government to distribute .bd. s among unemployed
The succeeding ministry resigned
in October. 1924, because of divergent Views between II and parliament on the question of d'aarma-
iiient, and for the ihird time Dr.
Draining was called m hend the
government.
Attacked -Norman Submarine
Warfare
During the world wai Dr, Brant-
Ing was outspoken in his criticism
of Germany, and n May, HIT, he
made a bltt< r attack upon the German government's for Its submarine
warfare, character^ nu- Germany's
ruling clique as **ihe common enemies of mankind."

of the Dutch-Scandinavian delegation which sat at Stockholm and in
turn conferred with delegations of
the Socialist parties from nearly till
iiu- belligerent counties, with a view
to dev.-ing a platform for joint intervention by them in the interests
of peace. In January and February,
lit 11', he was chairman of the Internationale Social Democratic conference at Ucrne, at which llritish.
French 'and Germans met for the

Dr. Dranting, with Chr slian h.
Lang of Norway, secretary of the
International union, was awarded the
Xobio peace prize for 1821.
Eorn at Stockholm, November
28, 18(!0, he was the SOS of professor L. G. Draining. He was
educated at Cpsala university, studying natural sciences.
A trip abroad prior to 1SKL'
brought the young se'entist into touch
with Socialism, and when he returned he immediately got into
politics through the journalistic
channel, becoming an editor on
the T.den, a Soctnl l_"mocratle
newspaper. He went over to the
Social Demokratem when it was
founded In 18K(I, and a year later
became editor. ln that position he
carried on his activities In behalf of

idea of war 'against our brothels

interpreted as suggesting Ihe assassination of the king. The sentence
subeoquently trot changed to a fine.
Dr. Brantlng was first elected to
