Competition Influences.
"It Is generally recognized by Canadian railway employees that for
economic reasons which, In the interests of the employees as much as in
the Interests of the railways, must be
taken Into consideration, the rutes
paid on competing railways In the
United States largely Influence the
rates paid ln Canada. At the present ttnie ln the United States, the
reduced rates are In effect, but In j
view of the protests of the employees,
new henrlngs aro about to be instituted before the L'nlted States railway lnbor board.

"In the agreement which was proposed by the Canadian railways and
which has now been accepted by the
employee**' representatives, It Is provided that lhe reduced ratee will be
allowed to remain in effect without
prejudice, pending further consideration ond negotiation between representatives of the railways and employees when conditions so develop
on the railways of thf United States
affecting similar classes of employees,
as to enable the parties to conclude
a definite agreement, It being further agreed that except as may be
otherwise mutually arranged, any
rates of pay finally agreed upon will

and the railways will make adjustments accordingly.
Protects Interests.
"The Interim agreement protects
fully the Interests of the employees
until such time as definite agreements can be entered Into, which Is
all that coulfl be expected from expensive proceedings before a board
of conciliation."

reduction of wages ranging from 24
to fcO cents a day went Into effect
on July 18. The cut affected about
40,000 employees composed of maintenance ' of way men, bridge nnd

All the World Would Buy
That present possibilities for
progress and prosperity in all
of the civilized countries of the
world are greater than ever,
once stability is restored, is a
fact which needs no proving.
It seems more than pathetic,
therefore, that industrial stagnation in many sections of the
globe and unsettled economic
political problems should stand
as barriers to accomplishment.
It magazine story and news report the one thing which seems
to loom largest is unrest; and
the thought comes to the reader
that there is nothing which is
so much needed in world politics, commerce, industry and
social relations as cooperation.
The good which could come
through its establishment and
the consequent dethroning of
greed qnd beliggerency could
scarce he measured.
.In this connection there is a
reai—tfermon for those who
would take the time to.read and
give a little study to some of
the business bulletins which
are issued from time to time by
commercial agencies and the
departments at Ottawa. Bus-f
iness which in these modern'
days is the life blood of all
progress seems to loom from
every quarter of the world.
What the conditions would be
if industrial relations were
nearer normal and unvexed by
the aftermaths of war can
scarcely be imagined.
These bulletins and news reports are for the purport of informing the exporters and man-,
ufacturers of the country what!
commodities are wanted in
near and remote corners of the
globe. The information is based
upon direct inquiry from reliable sources and one is brought
to the conclusion, even with a
casual reading, that the demand
just now is sufficient to Imp
every industry running at top-'
notch production indefinitely.
The most wholesome prosperity
comes to any nation when the
largest number of persons are
profitably and continuously
employed. It is at such times
that the arts, sciences and culture also make their greatest!
bounds forward, petty differences are forgotten, or quickly
adjusted, because each man is
busy in a great cooperative
movement—happy in supplying
what another needs.
There is no section of
world which has so many
tive products needed by
fortunate brothers in far
lands. The world's buyers are
at Canada's door to pay for the
products of the farm, the mill,
the mine and the forest.

THE HAVEN OF THE BLEST.
I havo a funny notion, but 1 calculate
It's right-
Though I alnt what you'd ever call
religious.
And while 1 pass it on nobody needs to
shirt a fij-ht,
For I alnt meanin' to be sacrile^lotiH.
Hut when I get to thlnkln' of the
churches we have got
And ull the different brands of savin'
Ktiice,
It sterns an awful muddle and It --tarts
me feelin' sad
At how these different sects divide
the race.
We all have got our notions how to
reach the pearly gate
And nil are hopln' we can nuiko lhe
climb.
Some folk*" get nil het up for fear
. they're goln' to be too lute,
While others calculatt- there's lots of
time.
Then some are too solicitous about ihe
other chap,
And criticize his gait and start to
laugh.
The two of them start argufying—then
they start to scnip—
That starts tli.ni both backsleliu'
down thc path.
Then others go their .selfish way and
tell you mifs'hty sharp
Their way of savin' souls is much the
best.
They think their whips ars sprouiin'
and they're goln" to play a harp
When they git to the "hftven of the
bl. st."
While others ate so busy helptn* wicked
folks like us • i "
They aint a-buastin' where they're
goln'  to land;
They're, just the common Christian-! and
they never raise a fuss,
Hut always try to give a helpin' h.'nd.
So I been kind of thlnkln' when we
reach the Judgment place
And Gabriel calls for order in the
court,
That the good Lord who made us aad
who loves the human race
Aint Koin' to ask us when we there
report
The brand of our religion or if we w<*nt
to church,
Or what was lure our most hewettln"
sin;
He alnt a-goln' to ask about uur pit
religious stunts
Before he says Hi's goln' to let us In.
1'eihaps He alnt n-goin' to ask a hi. s.-id
thiiiK at all,
So I don't m what folks have need
to fear.
A l.od of Dove won't tell us that we're
lost beyond recall.
So what's the us.* of wiitni-liu' while
we're here?
He madi the blessed earth and every-
thiitK that is therein
And knows that we're a-bue.-ln'
mighty odds.
Hut some conceited- critters think
they're bnyin' reserved s-*;ils

are ths ideal summer diet! .
Over-heavy foods cause more illness during the summer weather than any other
thing you do! Simplify your diet. Men,
women and children will work and play and
sleep better if they'll switch-in on Kellogg's
"WAXTITE" Corn Flakes and plenty of
cold milk and the delicious fresh fruits now
in season!
Kellogg's "WAXTITE" are wonderfully refreshing—and nourishing—
and always mighty crisp and delicious
for any meal. Let the little folks eat
as much of Kellogg's "WAXTITE"
as they want, for Kellogg's "WAXTITE" Corn Flakes digest quickly
and easily and rest the stomach.
