MAHATMA GANDHI LIKELY TO SUCCEED
TO SUPREME DICTATORSHIP ALL-INDIA
CONGRESS, CHALLENGING WHOLE POLICY
LONDON, Dec. 27.—Thc Bombay i-ui-rcspoiident of thc
London Times predicts that Mahatma Gandhi will succeed in
the present session of lhe Ahmedahabad congress in securing
complete dictatorship, and that the congress will invest him
with leadership and dictatorial powers and control of the congress organization funds. He will employ these to extend non-
cooperation, civil disobedience and non-payment of taxes with
increased vigor throughout India, deliberately challenging the
whole policy of the Indian government.
Gandhi professes delight at the governmunt s repressive
measures, which, he is convinced, will disgust thc moderates
and close the ranks of his adherents. The correspondent
thinks that this aspect of thc situation is disquieting, for the
constitutional government machinery ia erected on the loyal
cooperation ot,'*^ moderates in thc task of governing thc
country.

H. Wicklmm Steed, editor of
the London Times,'says that if
a referendum ia taken it will
show thnt fully 90 per cent of
the people of Ireland arc in favor of the ap-reement for the
establishment of the Irish Free
State.
Probably that is true. Ire
land must be sick of murder
and outrage and strife and be
glad of thc opportunity which
the new agreement gives to put
an end to it.
But Mr. Steed should not
drag the King into the imbroglio. The. statement that it
would surprise many people to
know "how much of himself is
in the Belfast speech" is unwise. The King may personally agree with all that was in
the Belfast speech. It may be
taken for granted that he docs.
It was a speech which naturally
appeals to the reasonable man.
But the King takes no part in
the issues between bis subjects.
He simply voices thc views and
the policies and thc intentions
of the government of the day.
Britain Tolerant of the Religions of All Its Subjects.
Hakim Ajmal Khan blames
Great Britain for standing in
the way pf the Islamic aspirations.
Ajmal apparently has not
read history, or if lie hns read
it he tales nothing for what it
teaches.
Grc;;t Britain has always
been -a friend of the Moslems.
It has always carried out the
policy of giving freedom to all
sects in India and in the Near
Kast and the Far East. It has
never indulged in religious crusades since it became an Empire. On the contrary, it has
protected the Moslems, as it has
protected those of other ctcjmIs.
There are proofs innumerable,
the most recent of which is its
attitude toward Turkey, which,
but for British desire to lie
rather more than fair to the
Islamic people, would have been
governed by the Asipiilh declaration that the Turk must lie
driven out of Constantinople.
In Imlia all creeds, all sects,
have been free to preach their
views. All have been free to expand.
But for Britain the Moslems
themselves might by this time
have been driven out of India.
A Progressive Move.
The directors and members
of thc Nelson Curling club nre
to be congratulated upon the
new rink, upon whieh the initial games have been played
during the past few days.
It is a credit to Nelson and
the district and it has already
resulted in a largely increased
membership for the club.
But its value is not eonfincd
to thc members of the Nelson
club. It will prove to be an
additional attraction for Nelson
to offer the British Columbia
Curling association, under
whose auspices annual provin-
cial bonspiels are held.

BOOKBINDING
THAT IS
WORTH WHILE
Bookbinding is an art.
It demands the highest
skill. More than that, it
calls for the ability to so
bind a book that .binding
will be suitable as well as
durable.
Materials employed must
lie expressive of thc book
which is bound as well as
strong enough to stand
wear and tear.
Let us do your work.
