What might have proved to be one of tlie most disastrous fires in Nelson for many years occurred about two oYlnrk this afternoon, in the lumber yards >f the Nelson Saw and Planing Mill. The lire started in a large lumber pile immediately back of the plan- inj-f mill department and as the Fire Department was hampered somewhat iu making a response the Haines had spread to several piles and was blazing fiercely on the arrival of the Department. Two lines of hose were quickly run and for a few minutes it looked us if the tire had heen gotten under Control lint as a stiff wind from the south was blowing the fire broke out in several plaees. After half an hour of exceedingly hard work the fire was extinguished with the exception of a pile of sawdust which continued to smoulder. The saw mill which lies soutli about 200 yards of th*' place where the lire originated, and which was also in a direct line with the wind, was set a blaze from the sparks of the lire. Had it not heen I'or 'tlie many men and hoys, who labored iucessently with buckets carrying water from the pond the saw mill would have been burned, hut as a result of their hard work the mill was saved. 'Ihe cause of the fire is unknown, hut it is thought that it was caused ly a Spark from the smokestack of the planing mill. The damage to the lumber was Blight, but the wooden bridge connecting the two mills was badly horned. No damage was done to either mill, except at the sawmill, many boards had to he torn up to get at the lire, which was burning in the waste material under tlie mill. It Is the natural home of the Congress of tho Associated Hoards for Eastern British Columbia, mil it should H) be made by formal rem dutton. ,W)WVvivw/wv*vw.w^^ The second session of the CongroBS of the Associated Hoards of Trade for Eastern British Columbia Is about to be held in this City, This is the commercial Parliament of the principal mining region of the Province. It may not have the power to put Its wishes Into the form of legal enactments which all will 1 bilged to obey, but its members are the pick of the business class of thc community, and thej understand better tin' public requirements than do those who compose tin- Legislature at Victoria. Although, therefore, not endowed with power to make enactments in the name of llei Majesty, anything that It is tlicli wish to recommend is backed by u judgment which Bhould insure its adoption by that body of commissioned legislators whose special function it is to moke the laws of the country. There will be many matters conic up for consideration and action, all of them of interest to thc section of the Province represented at the Congress and many of them of much Importance. Each local Hoard of Trade is Invited to submit questions which it desires to bring to the attention of the Congress, and in this manner the wants of the entire section will be brought under notice. We do not understand, however, that because a question is submitted for consideration the Associated Hoards arc bound to take action on it. For example, the Nelson Hoard of Trade is asking this Congress to recommend that the local Land Registry otlice beat once opened for business. From a local standpoint that is au excellent recommendation, It is bigll time this oflice was opened, and when put at the service of the public It will prove to be a great accommodation. But it is so essentially a local affair that thc Associated Boards may not regard it as properly coming within their sphere of Influence; that is. they would hold themselves justified iu passing over it if such was their wish, Our local Hoard is recommending some other mutters, however. It is asking theCongress to take up the question of a better postal service in this part of the Province, to recommend the publication of monthly mining reports liy the Government, to consider the preservation of trout in tlie Inland waters, anil to advise certain amendments to the mining laws. These arc all matters of general interest, and the Congress will feel itself bound to takl action upon tbem. Tho postal service is abominable, and the Associated Hoards will earu the public gratitude if they pasH n resolution strongonough to bring the postal authorities to their senses. There is great danger of our trout being exterminated, which would be a calamity; If the Congress can do anything to avert it, it Bhould do so. The wisdom of monthly mining reports is so obvious that one is surprised the Legislature did not provide for them long ago; a sharp reminder of its neglected duty from the Associated Hoards ought to have 11 good effect. These are matters that will come up at the suggestion of the Nelson Hoard; there are other questions recommended by other Hoards, of equal Importance and utility, some of them perhaps of greater public interest. Whatever tlie Associated liounis may determine In respect to them will deserve the most serious consideration o_ the Oovormontal and Legislative authorities thai are directly concerned. London, Aug.I.- The Dnlco of Marl borougli bad most IntereBtlnff ox-perl- enees in South Afrioa, and though piirticlliatlng in many of lho liglils and undergoing long marohoe, cnme through without a eoratoh or a day's Illness, After leaving Bloemfontein, where ho waa attached to Lord Roh erts' stair, he joined Gen, Ian llnmil- toil, acting as "gallu|iei'" for lllin during the hard-fought progrosa inward Pretoria, The Duke had several narrow esoapes, On one occasion a sliell burst within n few feel of liim. A fragment hit (ienernl Hamilton 111 the small of the baoh and knocked him down, but by great. luck 1 it failed to penetrate. The Dnko of Marlborough escaped all the Hying fragment*. Entering Pretorin ahead of the army the Unite, aocoinpauled only by his cousin, Mr, Winston Ohurohlll, rode out to the enclosure where the Itrit.isb officers were imprisoned. These at BrBt took hlin for a Hoer, but when bo was recognized tbe prisoners set up a howl of delight. A Boer sentry raised his gun and almoat tired point blank, but the Commandant stopped hi in and surrendered. The Britisli officers, pale and with beards of six months' growth, cried, laughed ami oheered like madmen. Then tbey hoisted a Union Jack, made during their captivity "ill of stolen vlrkleur, and treasured up till tbat long expected moment. THEY GOT THE GUBS. Two prospectors Attacked n. a Silver Tin on Sophie Mountain. Daniel und Thomas English, who reside on l.e Roi Avenue nenr Cliff street, have a couple of silver lip cubs which they captured on Sophie Mountain on Tuesday evening of last week, says tlie Kossland Miner. The two men, who are father and son. own some mineral claims on Sophie Moun- tain on whioh tbey have been recently doing assessment work, They were returning to eainpun Tuesday evening lust when they saw coining towards them along them trail a Bhe bear ami two oubs, The big hear was evidently in bad bunuir. niul made at once for the prospectors, Daniel fortunntoly bad a heavy caliber revolver with bim and tired at tlie bear when slie was about'.Ti feet away. Tlie bullet struck her but did not inflict a fatal wound, Witli a fierce growl she Increased her speecL Within I.", feet of where tlie two prospectors Stood there was a large log, and as tbe bear put her front paws ou tbe top of it. her breast offered 11 fair mark, and a sic,I was fired which was intended tu reach her heart, It struck fair, tbe blood gush - ed from the wound onto tbe log. The bear did not come over the log. but turned and dasbed off Into tbe brush, leaving a trail of blood behind her. A Hcarcb was made for her. but slie could not be found. Tbe supposition is tbat slie was mortally wounded and crawled off to bcr den to die. Thc cubs took refuge during tlie fu- silade in a dead cedar tree tbat was 75 feet high, and from tins height tbey looked quietly down at the two prospectors witli a what-ure-yim-gn- ing-to-do-about-it air. An axe was procured from tbe camp, which was close at band, and tbe tree felled. The cubs were not severely hurt liy the fall, and scampered off ton smaller tree, which was about SO feet high. A couple of pieces of rope were procured and after a short climb they were lassoed and placed in bags and brought to this city. The cubs are cunning little fellows and weigh probably :;n pounds each. Tbey are of a very dark-brown color with white muzzles. Tbey arc said In be genuine silver-tip bears. They are between two and a half :nul three months old. So far they have lieen fed on condensed milk, which they partake of greedily. It is tlie intention of the owners to sell them when they have become a little larger to either a circus or h museum, SMOKE THE CELEBRATED BRiAR PIPES.
