He replied: "I see from the papers that the action of tlie deputy is pretty gener ally endorsed. It appears to be considered that Nngle's presence was necessary aud liis action justified. I do not core to speak of the legal aspects of the case. I do not know any case analogous to it in our history, anil I do not recall that it has ever been necessary before to provide protection for a United States judge. If the case comes to trial I suppose I mill be called to testify, but I question whether there ever will he a trial." The grand jury may refuse to act, or the coroner's jury may find it a cose of justifiable homicide. I hove net examined the legality of the question, however. I thought that the protection of the officers of the law might be necessary antl I know something about the desperate character of the man with whom Justice Field had to deal. I thought ol trouble when 'the trial began, but of course I did not look for it at a way station or upon the train. If the justice's life was in danger, though, he was sb much entitled to the protection of an officer at an eating house as in a court room or upon a bench." Though the attorney-general was very guarded ia his utterances, liis manner indicated very plainly that he believed Deputy Nagle fully justified ia shooting Terry. BALE OK TIMIIKK LIMITS. A fashionable uuthoi-ess of tho last century wus Miss Fanny Burney, whose "EvQlinn" delighted Dr. Johnson and Sir Joshua Reynolds. When sho had become famous she was the gtiest of Mrs. Delaney, n venerable, cultured lady, who lived nt Windsor, uot far from tho castle whero George IU and Queen Charlotte resided. Tho king and queen frequently called on their neighbor, and shy Miss Funny at such times sought her own room. But ono afternoon she and Mrs. Do laney were in the drawing room, when suddenly the door opened. A large inau entered, wlio shut tlio door without speaking. Tlio star on his breast revealed to Miss Burney that sho stood in the presence of the king. She re treated to the wall. The king advanced lo his hostess and in a loud whisper asked if thut was Miss Burney. Upon being assured that it was ho drew near and entered into conversation witll her. "But what— what—how wns it—how camo you—how happened it—what— wlint—what?" be asked, in bis usual odd manner. Believing ho referred to "Evelina," sho replied that it had been written ut odd hours for amusement "But your publishing—your print- .-ig—how wus that— what— what?" bo asked; to which sho answered: "I thought, sir, it would look woll in fa, print," at whicli ho wus vastly amused. Soon sho becamo familiar witli Iho presenco of royalty, and on one occu sion had tho advantage of hearing bis majesty's criticisms on somo famous men. Voltaire bo pronounced a monster, and Shakespeare ho considered little better than a fool. "Was thero over," cried out this royal Solomon, "such stuff as grout part of Shakespeare?—only ono must not say so. But what think you—what —what—is there not sad stuff—what —what—what?" Fanny Burney ventured to assert that the Bad stuff was mixed with many excellencies; but he interrupted her to ejaculate; "Oh, I know it is not to be said—but it's truo—only it's Shakcspearo, and nobody dares abuse him; ono should bo stoned for saying so."—Youth's Companion. A Comfortable View of Crime. It will throw somo light on tho in habitants of Fernando do Noronliit lo know how crime is looked upon by tho common peoplo in Brazil, and 1 cannot better show this than by re- luting a bit of personal experience. Iliad tho misfortune at one time to wound a Brazilian laborer—in liis dignity. He thereupon threatened to take my life, and was by no means careful to keep bis resolution to himself. As tho carrying out of such a determination on his part would haro caused mo much inconvenience, I called upon him in person, with tho purpose, if possible, of dissuading him. I found (hut lie did not look upon thu condition of a criminal with dread at all. Ho told me frankly tliat, if lie should succecccd in carrying out bis design, ho know perfectly well whut liis career would bo. "At present," said he, "lam obliged to work for u living; if I am sent to jail, my living will bo furnished ino, and I shall havo nothing lo do. If you aro dead, thoro will bo uo ono to uppcar against mo in tho courts as my licenser, and in the course of a your or less I shall bo set frco, woll rested, and with tho reputation in lliocoiiiintiiiily of being a man of courage." In this caso 1 saw lo it that bo had tho opportunity of enjoying the coveted otiuin cum diguitato in jail witli out having to commit a crime. But in a country whero wrong doing sets so lightly upon tho conscience, aud whero it so frequently goes altogether unpunished, tho criminal class is large as wo should expect.—John 0. Upon thoinsidoof the door is attached a hammered brass or othor strip of more expansible melul than tho cast iron of which the door is made, this strip being attached to the door at its ends. Collis Browne (late Army Medical Stall), to whicli he gave thc name of CHLORODVNE, and which is admitted by the profession to lie the most wonderful and valuable remedy ever discovered. CHLORODYNE is the best remedy known (or Coughs, Consumption, Bronchitis, Asthma. CHLORODYNE acts like a charm in Diarrhoea, and is the only specific in Cholera and Dysentery. CHLORODYNE effectually cuts short all attacks of Epilepsy, Hysteria, Palpitation and Spasms. CHLORODYNE Is the only palliative in Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gout, Cancer, Toothache, Meningitis, oV: , &c. From Symes & (Jo., I'liarinaceutlcal Chemist*. M*»rliml Halt, Simla. January 5th, 1880: To J. T. Davenport, Esq., 33 Creat Russell Street, Bloomsbury, London, Dear Sir:—We embrace this opportunity of congratulating you upon the wide-spread repu* tation this justly esteemed medicine, Dr. J. Collis Jrowne's Chlorodyne, has earned for itself, not only in Hlndostan, but all over the Fast. As a remedy of general utility, we much question Whether a better is imported into the country, and we shall be glad to hear of its finding a place in every Anglo-Indian home. The other brands, we are happy to say, are now relegated to the native bazaars, and judging from their salet we fancy their sojurn there will be but evanescent. We could multiply instances infinitum of the extraordinary efficacy of Dr. Collis Browne's Chlorodyne in Diarrhea, and 2nd Dysentery Spasms, Cramps, Neuralgia, the Vomiting of Pregnancy, and ab. general Sedative, that have occurred under our personal observation during many years. In Choleraic Diarrhoea, and even if the more terrible forms of Cholera itself, we have witnessed its controlling power. We haVe never used -iny other form of this medicine than Collis Browne's, from a firm conviction lhat it is decidedly the best, and also from a sense of duty we owe to the pro] fession and the public, as wc nre Of the opinion tnat the substitution of any other than Collis Browne's, is A DELIBERATE BREACH OF FAITH ON TIIE BART OF THE CHEMIST TO PRESCRIBE AND PATIENT ALIKE.
